Firefighters responded to two fires in the Umpqua and Lookingglass areas Sunday. Both fires were stopped before threatening any homes or structures, while their causes remain under investigation.

BLM fire restrictions remain in effect across Oregon and Washington as wildfire season continues. Officials are urging hunters, hikers and other visitors to check local closures and restrictions before heading onto public lands.

The Castle Fire northeast of Tiller has reached 87% containment at 3,613 acres. Crews continue mop-up, patrol and rehabilitation work as 388 personnel remain assigned to the lightning-caused fire.

A grass fire near I-5 in Wolf Creek grew to an estimated 5 to 10 acres Monday evening, with multiple ground crews, Air Attack and Type 2 helicopters responding along Lower Wolf Creek Road.

Fire danger has increased to “very high” across the Umpqua National Forest as hotter, drier conditions settle in. Stage 2 restrictions remain in effect, limiting campfires, chainsaw use, off-road travel, smoking, welding and other activities.

The Castle Fire has grown to 2,758 acres and is now 30% contained. Nearly 700 personnel are strengthening fire lines ahead of hotter, drier weather. The Umpqua National Forest has also expanded its closure area, affecting roads, trails and popular recreation sites.
