Fire Danger and Restrictions Increase Across Douglas District
Fire restrictions will increase across the Douglas District beginning Wednesday as warmer temperatures and lower humidity raise fire danger. Moderate Public Use Restrictions and Industrial Fire Precaution Level 2 will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 9.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Fire restrictions will increase across lands protected by the Douglas Forest Protective Association as warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity raise fire danger in the region.
Moderate Public Use Restrictions and Industrial Fire Precaution Level 2 will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.
The public use restrictions apply to private, county, state and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands within the Douglas District.
Under the Moderate restriction level, the following activities are only permitted before 1 p.m. or after 8 p.m.:
- Using non-industrial power saws
- Cutting, grinding or welding metal
- Cutting, trimming or mowing dried or cured grass
- Operating power-driven machinery for non-industrial property improvements or development on private lands
Motor vehicles, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles are limited to improved roads that are free of flammable vegetation. An exception applies to vehicles used for cultivating and harvesting agricultural crops.
Vehicles traveling on forestlands must carry an axe, a shovel and either one gallon of water or a fire extinguisher weighing at least 2.5 pounds. ATVs must carry an ABC fire extinguisher weighing at least 2.5 pounds.
All other off-road driving is prohibited.
IFPL Level 2 will apply in regulated use areas DG-1, DG-2, UA-1 and UA-2, along with forestlands within one-eighth mile of those areas. This includes lands managed by the Roseburg District Bureau of Land Management.
Under IFPL Level 2, several industrial activities may only take place between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. Those activities include:
- Operating power saws, except at loading sites
- Using feller-bunchers with rotary-head saws
- Cable yarding
- Blasting
- Welding, cutting or grinding metal
DFPA is asking residents and visitors to check current restrictions before heading outdoors and to use caution with any activity that could produce sparks or heat near dry vegetation.
