Midweek Thunderstorm Chances Return To Southern Oregon

Thunderstorms could develop across parts of southern Oregon and northern California on Wednesday and Thursday as unstable conditions move into the region.
The National Weather Service in Medford said the best chance for storms will be during the afternoon and evening hours. While not every area will see thunderstorms, forecasters said any storms that do form could move quickly and may produce gusty winds, lightning and bursts of moderate to heavy rain.
The setup is expected to be driven in part by stronger winds above the surface, which can help storms move faster and increase the potential for sudden wind gusts. Lightning will also be a concern, especially for anyone spending time outdoors, traveling through rural areas, or recreating near lakes, open fields, ridgelines or other exposed locations.
Residents with outdoor plans are encouraged to keep an eye on the sky and have a backup plan in case storms develop nearby. The National Weather Service reminds people that when thunder is heard, it is time to go indoors. Safe shelter includes a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle.
The thunderstorm threat is expected to be focused mainly during the afternoon and evening periods Wednesday and Thursday. Conditions may change as the system develops, so residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Medford.
Roseburg Police Arrest DUII Suspect After Report Of Infant In Vehicle

Roseburg police arrested a 22-year-old woman Tuesday evening after officers responded to a report of a suspected DUII driver traveling from the Winston area toward Roseburg with an infant inside the vehicle.
According to the Roseburg Police Department, officers were notified that Mariah Kay Sabota, of Roseburg, was allegedly driving under the influence with a 2-month-old infant in the vehicle. Officers located the red 2014 Honda Accord as it entered SE Stephens Street from Highway 99 and reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and failing to stay in its lane.
Police conducted a traffic stop near SE Lane Avenue and SE Stephens Street at about 5:44 p.m. During the stop, officers contacted Sabota and later reported finding the infant lying on his back on the floorboard in the back of the vehicle.
Officers said Sabota agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests and performed poorly. She was taken to Douglas County Corrections, where police said she refused to provide a breath sample. A search warrant was requested and granted, and Sabota was taken to Mercy Medical Center for a blood draw before being returned to Corrections.
The infant was picked up by Child Protective Services, according to police. Sabota’s vehicle was released to her mother at Sabota’s request.
Sabota was booked and lodged at Douglas County Corrections on charges of reckless endangering, reckless driving, failure to properly use a seatbelt, failure to drive within lane and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Roseburg Public Library Summer Reading Program Opens June 1

Roseburg Public Library is preparing to launch its Summer Reading Program, giving children, teens and adults a chance to read, take part in activities and earn prizes throughout the summer.
The free program begins Monday, June 1, and runs through Saturday, Aug. 22. It is open to local readers of all ages, and participants do not need a Roseburg Public Library card to join.
For younger readers, from birth through high school graduation, the program will center on tracking reading time. Children and teens can log the minutes they read, or the time someone reads to them. For every seven hours completed, participants can choose a new book and three treasure chest prizes.
Those who finish the full log, which totals 21 hours of reading, will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a $150 Barnes & Noble gift card. The library plans to award three grand prizes.
Youth participants also can submit book reviews during the program for additional chances to win prizes on display in the library’s lobby.
The library also has a full schedule of summer activities planned for children and teens. A StoryWalk® will be available at parks around Roseburg from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the program. Grab-and-go craft kits will be available at the library on a first-come, first-served basis at 10 a.m. every Tuesday beginning June 2.
Preschool Storytime with Youth Services Librarian Aurora Ropp will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays from June 3 through Aug. 19 at the Stewart Park Pavilion.
Beginning June 16, children in pre-K through fifth grade can attend a weekly Tuesday activity or special performance at 1 p.m. at the library. Starting June 18, students entering sixth through 12th grade are invited to Thursday activities from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the library.
One of the summer highlights will be the library’s sixth annual Harry Potter Day, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The event will include wizarding crafts, Harry Potter trivia, prizes and an 11 a.m. musical performance by Tonks from Tonks and the Aurors. A raffle for attendees 18 and younger will include a Harry Potter quilt, with the winner required to be present for the noon drawing.
Adults also have their own summer challenge. The library is offering Summer Reading Op-oly, a board game-style program featuring reading prompts and activities. Adult participants can earn free books and enter to win a $150 gift certificate to Sherm’s Thunderbird Market.
Adults may also submit book reviews for a chance to win a $50 gift card to one of four Roseburg businesses: Bagel Tree Café & Bakeshop, Fox and Fable Bookshop, While Away Books and Yours Truly Bookshop.
Reading logs and forms will be available online Sunday, May 31, and at the library Tuesday, June 2. More details are available at roseburgpubliclibrary.org.
Major sponsors of this year’s Summer Reading Program include Barb Coen, Douglas County Cultural Coalition, Friends of the Roseburg Public Library, the State Library of Oregon, and Karen and Jon Wittwer.

Steamboat Road Travelers Should Expect Full Closures During Geotechnical Work

Travelers using Steamboat Road should plan for full closures today and tomorrow as crews continue geotechnical work tied to a future road project.
The work is taking place on National Forest System Road 38, also known as Steamboat Road. The geotechnical investigation began May 19 and is expected to continue through May 28. The project involves a truck-mounted drill rig being positioned along the roadway so crews can collect soil and rock samples beneath the road surface.
The information gathered will help inform the design of future improvements to the forest road.
Delays and closures are expected while the work is underway. During full closures, travelers will need to use alternate routes to reach Forest Service lands beyond the closure area.
The tentative schedule includes:
- Tuesday, May 26: Full closure at milepost 20.8.
- Wednesday, May 27 through Thursday, May 28: Full closures during business hours at mileposts 3.61 and 3.67. Equipment is expected to be moved in the evenings.
Officials thanked the public for their patience while work continues to improve forest infrastructure.
Hope for Kids in Crisis Donation Effort Supports Local Children And Families

A Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participant is leading a community donation effort aimed at helping local children and families during crisis situations.
The project, called Hope for Kids in Crisis, will benefit the Oregon Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division in Douglas County. The effort is focused on collecting basic necessities for children from newborn to age 12 who may be entering care, receiving emergency support or going through a difficult transition.
ODHS Child Welfare staff work with vulnerable children and families during some of their most challenging moments. Organizers said having essential items available right away can help provide comfort, safety and dignity for children during uncertain times.
Community members are being asked to donate new items with tags for children from newborn through age 12. Needed items include:
- Diapers
- Baby wipes
- Light toiletries
- Clothing
- Shoes
Other helpful donations include car seats, gas cards and non-perishable snack items for families and children who may be waiting in the office.
All donations must be received by June 7, 2026.

A community car wash fundraiser will also be held on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Champion Car Wash, located at 250 Suite A NE Garden Valley Blvd. in Roseburg.
For every vehicle washed during the event, $1 will be donated to the Hope for Kids in Crisis project. Community members may also bring donation items to the event.
Recovery Through Service
The H.O.P.E. Drug Court Program includes community service projects as part of its focus on recovery, accountability and personal growth. Organizers said projects like Hope for Kids in Crisis give participants a way to give back while building positive connections in the community.
Drug Court helps individuals work through substance use disorders with treatment, support services, regular court supervision and accountability. Through service projects, participants are able to support others while reinforcing responsibility, compassion and long-term recovery.
“This project is an opportunity for our community to come together and support children who may be facing challenging circumstances,” said Jeremiah Ulam, Drug Court Graduate Phase Participant. “Every diaper, pair of shoes, package of wipes, and clothing item donated helps ensure that children entering or receiving services through Child Welfare have access to basic necessities and a sense of dignity and comfort.”
The H.O.P.E. Drug Court Project is encouraging community members, businesses, civic organizations and families throughout Douglas County to take part in the effort.
More information about the H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is available through the Douglas County website under the Local Public Safety Coordinating Council section.

H.O.P.E. DRUG COURT PARTICIPANT LAUNCHES EMPOWERING EMPLOYMENY PROJECT

A Douglas County H.O.P.E Drug Court graduate phase participant has announced the Empowering Employment community initiative designed to help individuals overcome barriers to employment by providing professional clothing, job-readiness training, and direct connections to local employers
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said employment plays a critical role in long-term recovery, offering stability, purpose and opportunities for personal growth. For many individuals rebuilding their lives, securing meaningful employment can be one of the most significant and challenging steps toward success.
H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participant Tracy Fatkin said, “I cannot overstate the importance gainful employment has in one’s recovery”. Fatkin said, “The benefits are limitless – not only to one’s own sense of pride, financial stability, and accomplishment – but also to the community as a whole. Having to face barriers to employment is a very difficult thing to overcome when you’re starting over and trying to fix the mistakes you’ve made”.
As part of the project, community members are encouraged to donate new or gently used interview appropriate clothing and shoes. Donations will be distributed throughout the local community through redeemable vouchers at the Roseburg Dream Center on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard.
Clothing donations will be accepted through June 1st at:
- Adapt Integrated Healthcare on West Madrone Street
- Painted Horse Recovery at 1941 Northeast Stephens Street
- Prints Charming at 419 Southeast Main Street
In addition, a Resume Writing and Interview Workshop will be held on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at WorkSource Oregon at 846 Southeast Pine Street in Roseburg.
The Empowering Employment initiative will conclude with a Community Job Fair on June 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Painted Horse Recovery. The event will connect job seekers facing barriers to employment with local employers, workforce resources and community organizations dedicated to supporting successful reentry and recovery.
