Warm and dry conditions continue this week with breezy to locally gusty afternoon winds. Temperatures will trend higher Friday, then cool over the weekend. Weak upper level disturbances will move across the area in southwest flow through this weekend, resulting in periods of enhanced winds, but the chances for showers or thunderstorms is very low. A dry cold front may bring gusty winds to many areas on Saturday afternoon and evening. Winds ease on Sunday, with warm and dry conditions possible early next week.

DFPA Protected Lands

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Collectors, competitive players and families will have a new event to explore this fall when the Umpqua Collectibles Expo takes over Douglas Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The expo is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. VIP ticket holders will be allowed inside beginning at 9 a.m., giving them an additional hour to browse the vendor hall before general admission begins.

Organized by Roseburg-based Umpqua Collectibles, the event will bring together trading cards, sports memorabilia, comics, games, artwork and other collectibles under one roof. Organizers are planning space for more than 120 vendor tables featuring Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Lorcana, sports cards, retro games, memorabilia and other items.

The event will be held at Douglas Hall, located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2110 Frear Street in Roseburg.

Shopping, Tournaments and Open Play

The expo is designed to include more than buying and selling. Organized card tournaments, tabletop events and casual play areas are expected to operate throughout the day.

Games currently listed by organizers include Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Lorcana and Riftbound, with additional tournaments and activities expected to be announced as the event approaches. Tournament organizers interested in hosting a premier event may also apply through the Umpqua Collectibles Expo website.

The vendor hall is expected to include a mix of established collectors, local sellers, artists and creators. In addition to trading cards, planned offerings include comics, retro games, custom artwork, apparel and sports memorabilia.

Vendors may reserve up to three tables. Early-bird vendor pricing is available through August 19, according to the event website. Each registered vendor will also receive two general admission passes.

Activities for Families

Families attending the expo can expect several activities beyond the vendor and tournament areas.

Organizers say face painting will be available for children, while on-site pinball machines will provide another way for visitors to spend time between shopping and scheduled events. Giveaways are also planned throughout the day.

Food trucks will be stationed at the fairgrounds during the expo, allowing attendees to purchase meals and refreshments without leaving the event.

Children younger than 10 will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Players registered for a qualifying premier tournament will also receive general admission as part of their tournament entry.

Admission and Tickets

Presale general admission is $5 and provides access to the expo from 10 a.m. until the event closes at 10 p.m. General admission purchased at the door will be $10.

VIP admission is $10 in advance and includes entry at 9 a.m., one hour before the general public. VIP tickets will cost $20 at the door.

Tickets are nonrefundable, according to the online ticket listings. Advance tickets can be purchased through the Umpqua Collectibles online shop.

The September expo follows the Cards, Comics & Collectibles event held at Backside Brewery in May. That event was part of organizer Lane Frost’s effort to bring together Douglas County’s different collecting and tabletop gaming communities.

Frost previously said Umpqua Collectibles grew from small online tournaments and local card sales into larger in-person gatherings. The September event was initially described as a significantly expanded version of the Backside Brewery show, with additional vendors, tournaments and activities.

Updates about participating vendors, tournaments and other activities will be posted on the Umpqua Collectibles Expo Facebook event page and the official expo webpage.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians has appointed longtime Douglas County law enforcement officer Todd Spingath as chief of the Cow Creek Tribal Police Department.

Spingath was formally sworn in during a ceremony Wednesday in Roseburg. He had served as interim police chief since February 2026 and previously worked as an officer with the tribal police department.

Spingath brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience to the position, including 25 years with the Roseburg Police Department.

“Chief Spingath represents so many of the values our Tribe holds high,” Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal Chairman Carla Keene said. “He demonstrates daily leadership, integrity, follow-through, and commitment to maintaining community safety.”

Keene said Spingath’s experience in criminal investigations, patrol operations and crisis intervention will benefit the Tribe and the surrounding community.

More Than Three Decades in Law Enforcement

Spingath served with the Roseburg Police Department from 1999 until 2025. During his career, he worked in the department’s Criminal Investigations Division and served as a member of the Douglas County Major Crimes Team.

He is certified as a field training officer, tactical team leader and law enforcement firearms instructor.

Spingath also previously served in the United States Air Force and worked as a sergeant with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office in Texas.

During his time with Roseburg police, Spingath received multiple commendations, including the department’s Medal of Honor. He was also formally recognized for his response as a detective following the Oct. 1, 2015, mass shooting at Umpqua Community College.

Spingath was named the Roseburg Police Department’s Officer/Investigator of the Year in 2015.

“It is an honor to serve the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal families, all the people who work for the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe, and the people of Douglas County,” Spingath said. “I look forward to building even more connections and working with our community to keep it safe, secure, and strong.”

Tribal Gifts Mark New Leadership Role

During Wednesday’s ceremony, Spingath thanked his family, friends and fellow law enforcement officers for their support.

Cow Creek Umpqua Education Programs Officer Jesse Jackson presented Spingath with two gifts representing his new role within the tribal government.

The first was an arrow intended to be placed above his doorway as a symbol of peace and protection. Spingath was also presented with a beaded blue heron feather.

“We know that Takelma means ‘People of the river,’” Jackson said, referring to the ancestral language of the Cow Creek Umpqua people. “One of our strongest relatives that is also a protector on the river is the blue heron. Now as our police chief, that spirit lives with you.”

Spingath was sworn in by Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal Board Member Luann Urban.

A Douglas County native, Spingath continues to live in the area with his wife of 31 years. They have three adult children and two grandchildren.

The City of Roseburg is inviting community members to meet the six candidates being considered for the city manager position during a public reception Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The candidates will be in Roseburg from Aug. 4 through Aug. 6 as part of the city’s recruitment and interview process. During the visit, they will take part in formal interviews and tour the community.

The public reception will give residents an opportunity to learn more about each candidate’s professional background, leadership style and interest in working for the City of Roseburg.

Each candidate will give a 10-minute presentation and will be available to speak with members of the community during the event.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - Music Off Central continues Thursday, July 30, with Super Diamond bringing the music of Neil Diamond to Central Park in Sutherlin.

The free concert is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. and will feature lead singer Surreal Neil alongside a full band delivering Neil Diamond favorites with a louder, rock-edged approach.

Super Diamond presents itself as more than a traditional cover band. The group combines classic songs, humor, high-energy musicianship and plenty of stage presence to create a show intended to appeal to longtime Neil Diamond fans and a new generation of listeners.

The band has appeared on national platforms including The Late Show with David Letterman, CNN, VH1 and Comedy Central. Super Diamond has also been featured in Rolling Stone, Spin and The New York Times.

Super Diamond is the latest performer in the Music Off Central summer concert series, which brings free live music, food and community gatherings to downtown Sutherlin.

TILLER, Ore. - Firefighters are continuing to reinforce containment lines around the Castle Fire as crews prepare for another period of warm, dry and gusty weather.

The lightning-caused wildfire had grown to 1,727 acres as of Wednesday, July 29. The fire remains 0% contained, with 442 personnel assigned to the incident.

Current fire information includes:

• Location: Approximately 23 miles northeast of Tiller

• Evacuation warnings: None
• Highway closures: None

Crews Strengthen Containment Lines

Firefighters completed significant work over the previous 24 hours to improve and reinforce containment lines ahead of elevated fire weather conditions.

The fire is primarily burning through needle litter and small trees in the forest understory. Crews are focused on keeping the fire within its current containment lines north of Castle Rock Fork and east of the road in the Black Rock Fork area.

Firefighters are also conducting planned firing operations in some areas. Those operations remove vegetation between the active fire and established containment lines, allowing crews to address the fire under more favorable and controlled conditions.

Officials said the strategy is being used to improve firefighter safety and reduce the likelihood of the fire spreading beyond established lines.

Warm and Gusty Weather Continues

High relative humidity overnight provided some recovery for vegetation and helped moderate fire behavior.

Sunny and warm conditions were expected Wednesday, along with gusty winds similar to those experienced Tuesday. Crews prepared containment lines in anticipation of the elevated fire weather.

Forest Closure Remains in Effect

Umpqua National Forest Closure Order No. 06-15-02-26-01 remains in effect because of the Castle Fire.

The closure includes National Forest System lands, roads and trails in the Little Black Rock and Castle Creek areas.

Affected roads include:

• National Forest Service Road 28 from the junction with NFSR 2823 to French Junction
• NFSR 2800-400
• NFSR 2823
• NFSR 2830

The following recreation sites are also closed:

• South Umpqua Falls Campground
• South Umpqua Falls Day Use Area

Forest officials said the closure is intended to protect members of the public and firefighters during active wildfire suppression operations. Additional information is available through the Umpqua National Forest Alerts and Notices page.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in Place

The entire Umpqua National Forest remains under High Fire Danger and Stage 2 Public Use Restrictions.

Current restrictions include:

• Campfires are prohibited in wilderness areas.
• Public firewood cutting involving an internal combustion engine is restricted.
• Campfires are permitted only inside Forest Service-constructed concrete or metal fire rings at designated developed recreation sites.
