Temperatures trend higher today as high pressure builds briefly. A dry cold front will move through Saturday. Stronger winds in advance of the front will likely bring critical fire weather conditions with low humidity for some areas east of the Cascades Saturday afternoon and evening. Higher humidities are likely west of the Cascades. Lower wind speeds and a cooler air mass are expected for most areas on Sunday. A thermal trough will strengthen early next week with hot, dry conditions developing inland Tuesday and Wednesday. Above normal warmth continues into late next week, but with little or no chance of thunderstorms.

DFPA Protected Lands

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A section of Douglas Avenue will be closed for most of the day Tuesday, Aug. 4, as crews complete tree trimming near the Deer Creek Bridge.

The road will be closed between Ramp Street and Rifle Range Road from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes, allow additional travel time and follow posted traffic-control signs in the area.

According to the City of Roseburg, the tree trimming will clear space for fiber-optic and other communication lines to be relocated. The utility work is part of the preparations for the Oregon Department of Transportation’s planned replacement of the Deer Creek Bridge in 2027.

The city thanked residents and motorists for their patience while the preparatory work is completed.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has completed a grant-funded traffic enforcement campaign aimed at reducing speeding and improving safety on local roads.

Deputies conducted 35 hours of additional speed enforcement during the July campaign. The overtime patrols were funded through a grant administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation.

During the enforcement period, deputies issued:

• 40 warnings for speeding
• 17 citations for speeding
• 9 citations for driving while suspended
• 2 warnings for equipment violations
• 3 citations for equipment violations
• 36 warnings for other violations
• 13 citations for other violations

“Speed limits are established to keep everyone safe,” Sheriff John Hanlin said. “Our goal is not simply to write citations, but to encourage drivers to slow down, make responsible decisions behind the wheel, and help prevent crashes that can have lifelong consequences.”

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to follow posted speed limits, avoid distractions such as cellphone use and adjust their speed for traffic, weather and roadway conditions.

RIDDLE, Ore. - Firefighters from several agencies responded Thursday morning to five small vegetation fires burning along roadways near Riddle.

The fires were first reported at approximately 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Pruner Road and Boyer Road. As crews headed to the area, additional fires were reported nearby along the roadway.

Firefighters located all five fires and quickly began suppression efforts. The coordinated response prevented the fires from spreading into the surrounding dry vegetation, according to the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

All five fires were extinguished and remained in mop-up status Thursday morning.

Responding agencies included:

• Canyonville-South Umpqua Fire District
• Tri City Rural Fire Protection District
• Cow Creek Tribal Fire Management

Preliminary findings indicate that all five fires were vehicle-related. Investigators are continuing to examine the incidents to determine the specific cause of each ignition.

With warm temperatures, dry vegetation and elevated fire danger across the district, DFPA reminded motorists that even a small roadside spark can quickly develop into a fast-moving wildfire.

Drivers are encouraged to keep vehicles properly maintained, avoid parking or driving through dry vegetation and make sure trailer safety chains are secured and not dragging on the roadway.

Anyone who sees smoke or fire should immediately call 911.

DFPA said this would be the agency’s only information release regarding the fires.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The City of Roseburg Finance Department has received national recognition for the quality and transparency of the city’s financial reporting.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada announced July 14 that Roseburg had earned a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report covering the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2025.

The report includes the city’s audited financial statements and provides detailed information about Roseburg’s financial performance and overall financial position during the fiscal year.

An independent panel reviewed the report and determined it met the association’s standards for clear, comprehensive and transparent financial reporting. Reviewers also found that the report demonstrated a constructive spirit of full disclosure and effectively communicated the city’s financial story.

The Government Finance Officers Association describes the certificate as the highest form of recognition available in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The organization said receiving the award is a significant accomplishment for a government and its management.

Based in Chicago, the association promotes best practices in public finance and represents government finance officials throughout the United States and Canada.

Roseburg’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, is available through the City of Roseburg’s website.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Roseburg City Council has granted preliminary approval to a proposal to renovate the Hoffman Center at the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center in Stewart Park.

Councilors approved a motion during their July 27 meeting supporting the conceptual renovation proposal. The decision allows the tennis center to continue planning and begin fundraising for the project.

The renovation has a preliminary cost estimate ranging from $277,000 to $328,000. The estimate remains subject to change as planning, design and fundraising continue.

Plans Call for Restrooms, Concessions and Office Space

The Hoffman Center was constructed in 1978 and previously included restrooms, concessions, office space and a pro shop. The building is not accessible under current Americans with Disabilities Act standards and has been vacant for more than 10 years.

Conceptual plans show the renovated building could include:

• Men’s and women’s restrooms
• Two unisex restrooms
• A concession area and service counter
• Office and foyer space
• Storage areas

The only permanent restrooms currently serving the outdoor courts are inside the tennis center’s indoor facility. Portable restrooms have also been brought in to accommodate increased use of the newly reconstructed outdoor courts.

Renovation Would Be Second Phase of Improvements

The Hoffman Center project would be the second phase of a larger improvement plan for the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center.

The first phase was completed in May and included reconstruction of the outdoor court area, which was more than 50 years old. Eleven tennis courts were replaced with eight tennis courts and 10 pickleball courts. The project also added LED lighting, perimeter fencing and improvements to accessibility, seating and security.

The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the Hoffman Center proposal on June 3 and unanimously recommended preliminary approval. City staff supported that recommendation.

Umpqua Valley Tennis Center plans to fund the proposed renovation, and city staff said no significant financial impact to the City of Roseburg is anticipated.

The council’s approval does not establish a final construction price. It allows the tennis center to move ahead with additional planning and fundraising while the project’s preliminary cost estimate is refined.
