Local Students Named 2026 Ford Family Foundation Scholarship Recipients

Seventeen students from Douglas County communities are among the newest scholarship recipients announced by The Ford Family Foundation, joining a 2026-2027 class of scholars selected from across Oregon and Siskiyou County, California.
The Roseburg-based Foundation announced 259 scholarship recipients this year through its Ford Scholars, Ford Opportunity Scholars, Ford Transfer Scholars and Ford Sons and Daughters programs. The scholarships are designed to help students who have worked hard, shown resilience, and faced financial or other barriers on the path to higher education.
For local families, the announcement is more than a list of names. It is a reminder that students from small towns, rural schools, community colleges and nontraditional paths are still finding their way forward, and that support like this can help make that next step possible.
“This new class of Scholars embodies hard work and resilience, motivation and the ability to rise to meet challenges,” said Denise Callahan, director of postsecondary success at The Ford Family Foundation. “We are excited to support these leaders in reaching their fullest potential.”
The Foundation said its scholarships are available to a wide range of learners, including high school seniors, transfer students, adult learners and parenting students. Awards through the Ford Scholars, Ford Transfer Scholars and Ford Opportunity programs can include a renewable financial award of up to $40,000 per year, depending on financial need, cost of attendance and other scholarships received.
Beyond the financial award, the Foundation said students also receive academic guidance, leadership development, personal and professional support, and access to the Ford Family alumni network.

What The Scholarships Support
The Ford Family Foundation offers several scholarship pathways, each aimed at students with different life and education experiences.
The Ford Scholars Program supports graduating high school seniors seeking a bachelor’s degree.
The Ford Transfer Scholars Program supports community college students who are ready to transfer to a four-year college.
The Ford Opportunity Program supports parents of any age, especially those parenting alone, along with adult learners over the age of 25 who are pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree.
The Foundation said it looks at the whole student, including academic potential, community engagement, work ethic, motivation and the ability to keep going through challenges. There is no minimum GPA requirement to apply.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, The Ford Family Foundation selected:
- 120 new Ford Scholars
- 90 new Ford Opportunity Scholars
- 25 new Ford Transfer Scholars
- 24 new Ford Sons and Daughters scholarship recipients
The Foundation, headquartered in Roseburg, has helped more than 6,000 students access a college degree. Since 1994, its scholarship programs have awarded more than $276 million to students.
For the local students named this year, the awards represent a major step toward college, career goals and the next chapter of their lives. They also reflect something Douglas County communities know well: talent and determination are not limited to large cities or big schools. Sometimes they come from small towns, rural classrooms, working families and students who simply needed someone to believe the next step was possible.
Roseburg Urban Sanitary Authority Customers Will See Sewer Rate Increase July 1

Roseburg Urban Sanitary Authority customers will see a higher sewer bill later this summer as the agency moves ahead with a rate increase tied to aging infrastructure, rising costs, and future system needs.
The new rates take effect July 1, 2026. For residential customers, the monthly sanitary sewer rate will increase to $60 per month per Equivalent Dwelling Unit, or EDU. RUSA says the new rate will first appear on bills dated August 1.
For non-residential customers, the increase may be more than $8 per month depending on the type of business and how sewer usage is calculated.
RUSA said the increase is part of a larger effort to keep up with the cost of maintaining and replacing parts of the local sewer system. The authority says its current sustainable rate projection is $80 per month, and customers should expect that annual rate adjustments are likely going forward.
According to RUSA, the increase is being driven by three main factors:
- Aging sewer infrastructure that needs ongoing maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.
- State and federal regulatory requirements tied to water quality and public health.
- Inflation and higher operating costs.
The agency’s capital improvement planning documents point to the scale of the system RUSA is responsible for. The local gravity sewer system includes roughly 160 miles of sewer main lines, about 4,150 manholes, and around 11,000 customer connections. Some pipes in the system date back to 1911.
RUSA’s five-year capital plan identifies several major sewer projects, including work on Hooker Road, the Deer Creek North Trunk Line, the Court-Fowler Syphon Lift Station, portions of the Deer Creek South Trunk Line, and Harvard Street East. The plan also includes ongoing inflow and infiltration rehabilitation work, which is aimed at reducing unwanted stormwater and groundwater from entering the sewer system.
The capital plan estimates the total replacement cost of the gravity sewer system at more than $358 million. RUSA’s planning documents also estimate a long-term annual replacement need of about $3.58 million if the system is replaced on a 100-year cycle.
RUSA said the rate increase is needed to keep service reliable and to continue investing in the system before problems become larger and more expensive.

Roseburg VA Bringing Back Classic Car Show, Adding Outreach Fair

The Roseburg VA is bringing its Classic Car Show back this month, and this year the event will include more than cars.
The Car Show + Outreach Fair is scheduled for Friday, June 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Roseburg VA Medical Center ellipse, located at 913 NW Garden Valley Boulevard in Roseburg. The event is weather permitting.
Community members are invited to bring their cars, walk through the Avenue of Flags, visit with VA resource teams, and grab lunch from local food trucks. Organizers said all cars are welcome.
This year’s event will also include resource tables from the Roseburg VA’s Enrollment, Suicide Prevention, and HUD-VASH teams. The Roseburg VA announced that the returning car show is being expanded with those VA resource tables as a way to connect veterans and the community with services in a more relaxed setting.
The HUD-VASH program, formally known as Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, combines HUD rental assistance with VA case management and supportive services for veterans experiencing homelessness.
The Roseburg VA’s enrollment team helps veterans learn about VA health care eligibility and registration. The Roseburg Eligibility and Enrollment Office is located on the VA campus, with regular weekday service hours listed by the VA.
The suicide prevention outreach portion also ties into a larger local and national effort to make sure veterans know support is available before a crisis point. The Roseburg VA has said suicide prevention remains one of its major priorities and that support is available for veterans who may be struggling, regardless of when or where they served.
The event is open to anyone who wants to stop by, see the cars, visit the flags, or learn more about available VA resources.

Western Oregon Could See Fire Risk Build as Summer Moves Along
Western Oregon may get a little more time before wildfire season really ramps up, but the latest national fire outlook shows conditions trending in the wrong direction as summer goes on.
For now, west-side Oregon is expected to stay closer to normal for significant fire potential in June. That makes sense for this side of the Cascades, where many areas still have some green-up and fuels are not drying out as fast as they are in central and eastern Oregon.
That does not mean the west side is out of the woods.
The June outlook points to a warmer and drier pattern across Oregon and Washington. May was already warmer than normal, and many places saw far less rain than usual. Snowpack also melted out early in many mid-elevation areas, which means some higher-elevation fuels are being exposed sooner than they normally would be.

The concern grows later in the summer.
By July, fire potential is expected to increase in parts of western Oregon as grasses cure and brush continues to dry out. The outlook also notes that portions of the Cascades may become more vulnerable because of the early snowmelt.

By August, above normal fire potential is expected across the entire Northwest, including western Oregon. That elevated potential is also expected to continue into September.

Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for August and September of 2026
For people on the west side of Oregon, the message is not that a major fire is guaranteed. It means the setup for larger or harder-to-control fires is expected to become more favorable as the season goes on, especially during hot, dry, windy, or lightning-driven weather.
June may still feel fairly normal in many west-side communities, but the outlook suggests the season could build quickly from there.
Community Dinner Planned For Diamond Lake Boulevard Corridor Feedback

Residents and business owners along Diamond Lake Boulevard will have a chance to learn more about future plans for the corridor during a community dinner and open house later this month.
Thrive Umpqua is hosting the gathering on Tuesday, June 16, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Abby’s Pizza, located at 2585 NE Diamond Lake Boulevard in Roseburg. Pizza and non-alcoholic drinks will be served from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with project information and discussion with Oregon Department of Transportation staff beginning at 4:15 p.m.
The meeting will focus on the Draft Diamond Lake Boulevard Plan, also known as the OR 138E Design Concept Plan. The City of Roseburg and ODOT are working on the plan to identify future improvements for Diamond Lake Boulevard and OR 138E, with a focus on safety, mobility, and better connections for people who drive, walk, bike, roll, or use the corridor to reach homes, businesses, downtown Roseburg, and nearby destinations.
The project area covers about 3.5 miles of Diamond Lake Boulevard and OR 138E, stretching from SE Douglas Avenue east to Roseburg’s urban growth boundary near Sunshine Park. The City notes that Diamond Lake Boulevard becomes North Umpqua Highway east of NE Patterson Street, but both names refer to OR 138E.
ODOT representatives are expected to share updates on the draft plan and recommendations being considered for the corridor. Residents, business owners, property owners, and others who regularly travel through East Roseburg are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and share feedback.
Event details:
- Tuesday, June 16, 2026
- 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Abby’s Pizza, 2585 NE Diamond Lake Boulevard, Roseburg
- Pizza and non-alcoholic beverages served from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Project discussion with ODOT begins at 4:15 p.m.
- Children are welcome to attend, but childcare will not be provided
The City of Roseburg is also holding a separate community open house the same evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Roseburg Public Library. That meeting will include a detailed overview of the Draft OR 138E Corridor Plan, along with time for public comment and discussion.

Douglas Education Service District Receives $10,000 Oregon Community Foundation Grant

Douglas Education Service District is among the Southern Oregon organizations receiving support through the Oregon Community Foundation’s 2026 Walker Fund grants.
The Roseburg-based district will receive $10,000 to help provide evening and weekend family events for Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education families. The goal is to make it easier for families to take part in events outside of the traditional workday.
Stacy Inman, director of Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education, said many families face challenges that can make daytime events difficult to attend.
“Many of our families are juggling work schedules, transportation barriers, caregiving responsibilities and other demands,” Inman said. “Offering family events outside of the traditional workday will make a meaningful difference.”
The local grant is part of a larger $2.25 million round of funding from the Reed and Carolee Walker Fund of Oregon Community Foundation. In all, 73 nonprofits serving Southern Oregon will receive funding this year.
The Walker Fund was established in 2003 and supports organizations working with children, families and people living on low incomes. The 2026 grants are aimed at programs focused on education, family stability, youth development, health and wellness, housing assistance and access to basic needs.
Amy Drake, senior program officer for Oregon Community Foundation, said the grants support organizations doing direct work with families facing economic hardship.
“These grants reflect the deep commitment Southern Oregon organizations have to children and families facing economic hardship,” Drake said.
Other representative grants announced by Oregon Community Foundation include $80,000 for Opportunities for Housing, Resources, and Assistance in Ashland, and $15,000 for the Upper Rogue Rotary Community Foundation in Eagle Point.
Southern Oregon University Foundation will also receive $135,000 in the first year of a three-year grant to support culturally specific youth summer camps, including Academia Latina, Konaway Nika Tillicum and the Black Youth Summer Institute.
Since it was created, the Walker Fund has invested more than $43 million in Jackson County organizations working to support children and families.
Oregon Community Foundation has been active since 1973 and distributes more than $200 million in grants and scholarships statewide each year.
