DFPA Crews Respond To Several Weekend Fires As Fire Restrictions Take Effect

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — Fire crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association responded to several fires across the Douglas District over the weekend, including a natural cover fire near Sutherlin that briefly prompted a Level 1 evacuation notice.
The fires came as fire season restrictions increased across DFPA-protected lands. Fire danger moved to MODERATE on Saturday, June 13, and Industrial Fire Precaution Levels increased to Level 2 on Monday, June 15.
DFPA said crews also responded to multiple illegal debris burns during the weekend. Citations were issued for violations of fire season regulations.
Open burning, including debris burning, is prohibited during fire season. Officials are reminding residents that warmer and drier conditions can quickly turn a small spark into a wildfire.
Cooper Fire Near Sutherlin
The largest of the weekend incidents was the Cooper Fire, reported Sunday, June 14, at about 1:25 p.m. roughly one mile west of Cooper Creek Reservoir.
Crews from DFPA, Sutherlin Fire Department, Oakland Rural Fire Protection District, Fair Oaks Rural Fire Protection District, Sutherlin Police Department, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded.
Because of the fire’s location near homes and the conditions at the time, a Level 1 evacuation notice was issued for homes near 550 South State Street in Sutherlin. That notice was later lifted after firefighters stopped the forward spread of the fire.
When crews arrived, they found a 1.3-acre natural cover fire burning uphill in steep terrain. Firefighters used an aggressive initial attack to keep the fire from spreading.
DFPA said resources assigned to the fire included four Type 6 engines, two Type 3 engines, command staff, a dozer, and air attack resources.
By 10:25 p.m. Sunday, crews had completed about 90 percent of mop-up work, and no visible smoke remained.
DFPA crews were expected to continue mop-up operations Monday before moving the fire into patrol status. Officials said three consecutive heat checks will be completed before the fire is considered fully contained.
The cause of the Cooper Fire remains under investigation.
Old Booth Fire Near Myrtle Creek
Crews also responded Sunday evening to a fire near the 1100 block of Booth Ranch Road in Myrtle Creek.
The fire was reported at about 5:10 p.m. after a fallen tree branch contacted power lines and ignited a nearby tree.
DFPA, Myrtle Creek Fire Department, and Tri City Rural Fire Protection District responded. Power was temporarily shut off in the area while firefighters worked, in coordination with the local electric utility provider.
The tree fire was extinguished before it could spread into nearby vegetation.
Jack Creek Fire Near Drain
Later Sunday evening, at about 7:15 p.m., DFPA and North Douglas Fire responded to a natural cover fire near the 400 block of Jack Creek Road in Drain.
North Douglas Fire crews had already extinguished the 0.10-acre fire by the time DFPA personnel arrived. DFPA assisted with mop-up work and began a cause investigation.
The cause remains under investigation.
Reminder: Drones Can Ground Firefighting Aircraft
DFPA is also reminding the public not to fly drones near wildfires.
Unauthorized drones in wildfire areas can force firefighting aircraft to remain grounded because of the risk of a collision. Officials say even a short delay in aerial operations can put firefighters, residents, homes, and other property at greater risk.
Interfering with firefighting operations on public lands is a federal crime punishable by up to 12 months in prison. The Federal Aviation Administration may also issue civil penalties of up to $75,000 when drone operators interfere with wildfire suppression, law enforcement, or emergency response operations during Temporary Flight Restrictions.
DFPA is asking residents and visitors to follow all current fire season restrictions and to report smoke or suspicious fire activity by calling 911.
All ODF Districts Now in Fire Season Across Oregon

SALEM, Ore. — Fire season is now in effect across every Oregon Department of Forestry district, meaning residents and visitors should expect restrictions in many parts of the state as agencies work to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires.
The final ODF district entered fire season on June 15, completing the statewide rollout. Fire season declarations are made locally when conditions become dry enough that fires are more likely to start and spread.
ODF officials say this summer is expected to be active, and they are urging Oregonians to take prevention seriously before conditions worsen.
“Looking at the current conditions and projections for the summer, ODF is prepared to have another busy fire season,” said Michael Curran, ODF’s Fire Protection Division chief. “Oregonians need to be practicing wildfire prevention and emergency preparedness now.”
Fire restrictions vary by area, so people are encouraged to check local rules before heading outdoors. In some places, campfires may be banned or limited to approved campgrounds. Backyard debris burning may also require a permit or be prohibited during fire season.
ODF is reminding people to fully extinguish campfires by drowning them with water, stirring the ashes, and repeating the process until the fire is cool to the touch. Anyone who burned debris earlier in the spring should also check burn piles again, as heat and dry conditions can cause old burn sites to rekindle.
Other common fire prevention steps include avoiding parking or idling vehicles over dry grass, making sure tow chains do not drag on the road, properly disposing of cigarettes, and checking fire danger levels before working or recreating outdoors.
Fireworks are also prohibited on forest lands, including private lands protected by ODF, as well as state and federal forest lands in Oregon. Local city and county restrictions may add additional limits.
Curran said prevention remains one of the most important ways to reduce the impact of wildfire season.
“Prevention is our number one tool to reduce property loss, firefighting costs, and risk to the lives of our firefighters,” Curran said. “We can’t prevent lightning fires, but we can prevent human-caused fires.”
ODF protects more than 16 million acres of private, county, state and federal land across Oregon. This year, the Central Oregon District was the first to enter fire season on May 8. The Northwest Oregon Area was the final district to declare fire season on June 15.
More wildfire prevention information is available through Keep Oregon Green.
Fire Near Ross Avenue Extinguished, Cause Under Investigation

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Firefighters responded to a small fire in the area of Ross Avenue off Lincoln Street, where crews were able to quickly stop the forward progress of the blaze.
The fire was estimated at about one-quarter acre. Officials said the fire has been extinguished, though firefighters remained on scene for mop-up work to make sure no hot spots remained.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
No additional details were immediately available.
Paul Morgan Observatory Reopens Public Stargazing Season at UCC

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Umpqua Community College’s Paul Morgan Observatory has reopened for its summer and fall public stargazing season, with several astronomy events planned on campus through September.
The season kicked off Saturday, June 13, as members of the public and the Umpqua Astronomers Club gathered for an evening program focused on the night sky. Public programs at the observatory use live telescope images and outdoor viewing to help visitors see planets, stars, star clusters, distant galaxies and other objects beyond Earth.
Depending on sky conditions, visitors may also have a chance to view planets such as Jupiter and Venus during twilight.
The Paul Morgan Observatory was built in 2016 as part of UCC’s astronomy program and community outreach efforts. The facility provides both onsite and online viewing of the sun and night sky. UCC describes it as the only public observatory in southern Oregon and the only all-digital observatory in the Northwest.
Upcoming public events include:
- Friday, July 10, 9:30 p.m. — Stellar formation, from protostars to planetary nebula
- Saturday, August 2, 8 p.m. — Moon Watch near the Technology Building’s east side tennis courts
- Friday, August 7, 9:30 p.m. — The heart of the Milky Way, including nebulae and star clusters
- Thursday, August 27, 8:30 p.m. — Lunar eclipse viewing
- Friday, September 11, 8 p.m. — Late summer and early fall skies
The August Moon Watch event is designed for beginning telescope users, with local amateur astronomers available to help people set up and use their telescopes. Telescopes will also be available for those who do not bring their own.
For observatory programs, visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and prepare for an evening outside.
