Crews Respond to Natural Cover Fire on Reservoir Hill

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Fire crews responded Wednesday afternoon to a natural cover fire on Reservoir Hill, where about an acre and a half of dry vegetation burned along the lower portion of the hill.
The Roseburg Fire Department and Cow Creek Tribal Fire Management were dispatched at 4:53 p.m. after reports of a fire in the area. When firefighters arrived, they found a slow-moving fire burning through dry vegetation.
Officials said the fire was not related to the controlled burn that took place earlier Wednesday morning at the top of Reservoir Hill.
As of 6:30 p.m., the fire was 100% lined, with about 50% of mop-up operations completed. Officials said the fire posed no threat to nearby homes or structures.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Smoke is expected to remain visible in the area through the evening as crews continue mop-up work.
Fire officials are also reminding residents that fire danger is increasing across the area as dry vegetation and rising temperatures create more hazardous conditions. The Roseburg Fire Department and Cow Creek Tribal Fire Management are urging community members to follow current fire restrictions, use extreme caution with any activity that could spark a fire, and help prevent human-caused wildfires.
Prescribed Burn Planned Near North Bank Habitat Management Area

GLIDE, Ore. — A 122-acre prescribed burn is planned in the North Bank Habitat Management Area, about six miles west of Glide off North Bank Road, weather permitting.
Ignitions could begin as early as Thursday, June 11, around 11 a.m.
The burn is being jointly coordinated by the United States Wildland Fire Service and the Bureau of Land Management’s Roseburg District. Officials said visitors should use caution in the area due to increased equipment and personnel traffic.
Portions of the local trail system may be temporarily impacted during the operation, including the West Entrance Parking Lot, Blacktail Ridge Trail, Middle Ridge Trail, Chasm Creek Road, Thistle Ridge Trail and North Gate Trail.
Prescribed fire is used as a land management tool to reduce wildfire risk, create more fire-resilient landscapes, improve forage for wildlife, reduce invasive species and restore and maintain oak woodlands.
Smoke may be visible from Glide and surrounding areas near North Bank Road. Fire managers said they will work with Oregon’s smoke management program to conduct the burn under conditions that help reduce smoke impacts to nearby communities.
Anyone with questions can contact the BLM Roseburg District at 541-440-4930.
Crews Knock Down Garage Fire Off Fisher Road in Garden Valley Area

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue crews responded Tuesday afternoon to a reported structure fire in the Garden Valley area after flames were reported coming from the front window of a garage.
Firefighters were dispatched at 12:38 p.m. to a home off Fisher Road, where vehicles were still in the driveway. While crews were on the way, they were told an elderly couple lived at the residence and that it was unknown whether anyone was inside.
An off-duty firefighter also reported a downed power line in the driveway and advised responding crews to use the second River Bend entrance. The firefighter reported that the garage fire had extended into the home.
When initial crews arrived, they found a working fire at a single-story residence and established command. Power lines were down directly in front of the home.
Firefighters made a quick initial attack and knocked down the fire within two minutes of arriving on scene. Crews then searched the residence and found no one inside.
No firefighter injuries were reported.
Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and the Roseburg Fire Department responded with four pieces of fire equipment and four command units, totaling 20 paid and volunteer personnel.
Due to the extent of the fire damage, crews were unable to determine the cause.
Pacific Power, Avista and the Red Cross assisted at the scene.
Cheryl Flick Receives 2026 Golden Sparky Award

Cheryl Flick received the 2026 Golden Sparky Award on Wednesday in recognition of her work in community risk reduction and public safety outreach in Roseburg.
The award is presented through the Oregon State Fire Marshal and honors a fire service member or agency for outstanding achievement in fire prevention or public safety education. The Golden Sparky Award has been given since 1977 and is one of the state’s long-running recognitions for prevention-focused work in the fire service.
Flick was recognized for efforts aimed at helping residents better understand fire risks, improve safety habits and reduce the chance of emergencies before they happen. Community risk reduction work can include outreach, education, home safety awareness and connecting residents with information that helps them prepare for fire and other hazards.
Virgil Osborne said Flick’s recognition was tied to her work in Roseburg, where public safety outreach has remained an important part of the fire department’s role in the community.
While firefighters are often recognized for emergency response, the Golden Sparky Award focuses on the prevention side of the profession. That work happens before an alarm is ever called in and often centers on helping residents, businesses and families make safer decisions.
Flick’s award highlights the impact of local fire prevention work and the value of outreach programs designed to keep the community safer.

About 260 students are expected to take part in Friday’s commencement ceremony. The college will also recognize 373 first-generation graduates.
The Class of 2026 includes students completing programs tied to several workforce needs in Douglas County and across Oregon. UCC said this year’s graduates include 126 allied health professionals, including 54 registered nurses, along with 19 welding students, 68 students earning computer science-related certificates and 159 graduates in business and retail management programs.
The college also trained 53 commercial truck drivers, 27 pharmacy technicians and 188 wildland firefighters.

Heat Wave Expected to Bring Near-Triple-Digit Temperatures to Roseburg This Weekend
ROSEBURG, Ore. — A stretch of warmer and drier weather is expected to build across southern Oregon through the rest of the week, with Roseburg likely to see its hottest temperatures of the year so far by Sunday.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 84 on Thursday, followed by another high near 84 on Friday. Winds will increase Friday afternoon, with north winds around 8 to 13 mph and gusts up to 20 mph possible.
The bigger change arrives over the weekend.
Saturday is expected to be sunny with a high near 92 in Roseburg. By Sunday, temperatures are forecast to climb to around 97 degrees, with clear skies continuing Sunday night and lows only falling to around 65.
Forecasters say a strong ridge of high pressure will build over the western United States, allowing temperatures to rise several degrees each day into the weekend. The heat is expected to peak Sunday through Tuesday, with many areas running 20 to 25 degrees above normal for early to mid-June.
Some inland areas west of the Cascades could reach the upper 90s or triple digits early next week. Medford and Grants Pass could approach 105 degrees, while parts of western Siskiyou County may climb even higher.
Along with the heat, humidity levels are expected to drop each afternoon. Fire weather officials said the warming and drying trend will bring low minimum humidities during the peak of the heat wave, though widespread critical fire weather conditions are not currently expected. Gusty afternoon breezes could still create localized concerns, especially Friday.
The marine forecast also points to rougher conditions along the southern Oregon coast, where a strengthening thermal trough is expected to bring gusty north winds and steep to very steep seas through the weekend. The worst marine conditions are expected south of Cape Blanco.
Forecasters said the ridge may begin to weaken by the middle of next week, but temperatures are still expected to remain above normal. There is also a slight chance that the breakdown of the heat wave could bring some thunderstorm potential around Wednesday or Thursday, mainly over far northern California and areas east of the Cascades. Confidence in that part of the forecast remains low.
For Roseburg, the next several days are expected to stay dry, sunny and increasingly hot. Residents should plan for rising afternoon temperatures, especially for outdoor work, recreation and pets.
