Douglas County Honors Firefighters And Remembers Fallen Firefighters During Proclamation Ceremony

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Douglas County commissioners recognized Firefighter Appreciation Week during a proclamation ceremony this week, honoring the firefighters who serve communities across the county and remembering those who have died in the line of duty.

The ceremony included remarks about the risks firefighters face, from structure fires and medical calls to wildland fire response, along with a reading of names of fallen firefighters connected to Douglas County agencies, local departments, state and federal fire service, and fire contractors.

The proclamation serves as both a thank-you to current firefighters and a moment of remembrance for those who gave their lives in service. The full story, including the list of firefighters remembered during the ceremony, is available by clicking the button below.

Winning Art Pieces from 2025 Art of Prevention Art Show (Adapt)

Adapt Integrated Health Care’s Prevention and Education Team will host its annual Art of Prevention Art Show on Wednesday, May 13, offering the community a chance to see prevention-focused artwork created by Douglas County youth.

The free event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Winston Community Center and is open to community members of all ages.

The showcase features pieces created by middle and high school students from across Douglas County. The artwork uses painting, drawing, and mixed media to explore topics connected to prevention, healthy choices, resilience, and challenges facing young people.

“A Look On the Inside” - 2025 Art of Prevention Art Show Winner (Adapt)

Sidnee Hedrick, Prevention Program Manager, said the event gives young people a meaningful way to share what matters to them.

“Art can be a powerful way for young people to express what matters to them,” Hedrick said. “This event creates space for their voices to be seen and heard while bringing the community together around a shared goal of supporting youth well-being.”

Artwork will be reviewed by community partners, with first, second, and third place prizes awarded in several categories:

  • Substance misuse prevention
  • Suicide and self-harm prevention
  • Problem gambling and gaming prevention
  • General prevention and resilience

Attendees will also be able to vote for their favorite entry as part of the People’s Choice Award.

Guests can walk through the exhibit, meet student artists, and enjoy light refreshments during the evening. Adapt is encouraging families, educators, community partners, and others to attend in support of the students and their work.

The Art of Prevention Art Show is designed to highlight youth voices through creative pieces that reflect advocacy, healing, lived experience, and hope within local communities.

Those interested in attending can RSVP here.

More Than 500 Douglas County Third Graders To Take Part In Eastwood Nature Days

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

More than 500 third grade students from Douglas County are expected to visit the Eastwood Nature Trail next week for Eastwood Nature Days, an annual outdoor education program hosted by Umpqua Watersheds.

The program will run May 4 through May 8 and will give students a chance to learn about the Umpqua Watershed through hands-on field stations focused on ecology, history, culture, plants, animals, fungi, waterways, and the natural systems that support life in the region.

Eastwood Nature Days is designed to move learning outside the classroom and into a natural setting, where students can see and explore many of the concepts they are studying. Throughout the week, students will rotate through outdoor learning stations led by volunteer educators, naturalists, community partners, and local subject-matter experts.

Lessons will cover the plants, wildlife, fungi, and aquatic life found in the Umpqua Watershed. Students will learn how different parts of an ecosystem work together, how native plants and animals survive, and how changes to one part of a natural system can affect the rest of it.

The program also includes lessons on the human and cultural history of the watershed. Students will be introduced to the story of the land, past practices that helped sustain it, the effects of environmental change, and ongoing efforts to support a healthier future.

“Our goal is to help students see the watershed as a living system that supports an incredible diversity of life, and to understand that every part of that system is connected,” said Julie Lowe, director of environmental education and outreach for Umpqua Watersheds. “When students can experience these ideas firsthand, outdoors and in the places where these processes are actually happening, the lessons become much more meaningful.”

Umpqua Watersheds said the program is supported by volunteer educators who donate their time to lead the learning stations. Local organizations and experts are also helping bring the event together, including the Takelma Cultural Center, Umpqua Valley Audubon Society, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Talk About Trees, Mushstash Mushroom Foraging, and others.

Local businesses are also contributing to the week. Bob’s Deli is donating food for the teaching team, and Crystal Falls Water is providing water for participants.

The event is held with the use of the Eastwood Nature Trail property at Eastwood Elementary School, which provides an outdoor setting for the week-long program.

Organizers said Eastwood Nature Days remains one of the area’s long-running youth education traditions, giving local students a chance to explore nature, ask questions, and better understand the watershed they live in.

Prescribed Burn Planned Thursday On Tiller Ranger District

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

A 112-acre prescribed burn is planned for Thursday, April 30, on the Long Prairie Unit 710 prescribed burn area in the Tiller Ranger District.

The burn is planned along National Forest Service Road 3201-300, west of Threehorn Campground. Ignitions are expected to begin Thursday, pending final approvals and favorable weather conditions.

Forest Service officials said conditions are looking favorable for the burn, but crews will continue evaluating weather in the hours before ignition. If conditions change, the prescribed fire may be canceled.

The Forest Service is coordinating with the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Oregon Department of Forestry, Tiller Volunteer Fire Department, and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Officials are also working with Oregon Department of Forestry smoke specialists to plan the burn and evaluate potential smoke impacts.

What Locals And Recreators Should Know

  • Expect extra traffic along roadways and allow additional travel time.
  • Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
  • Smoke may settle in low-lying areas overnight.
  • When driving in smoke, slow down and turn on headlights.
  • When air quality is poor, stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
  • Flying drones or unmanned aircraft systems near wildfires is illegal and can interfere with firefighting and prescribed fire operations.
  • Air quality information for the Tiller area is available through AirNow at airnow.gov.

Updates are expected to be posted before burning begins.

DINT Conducts Second Round Of Targeted Patrols In Roseburg

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

The Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team conducted another targeted enforcement operation in Roseburg on Tuesday, April 28, resulting in two arrests and additional cases still under investigation.

According to DINT, the patrols were conducted in response to concerns from community members and businesses about criminal activity in the city. Those concerns had previously been brought to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.

DINT said the targeted patrols are separate from its primary mission of identifying and investigating high-level drug distributors in Douglas County. The agency said the added enforcement was coordinated with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Roseburg Police Department, with funding provided by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.

During Tuesday afternoon’s operation, detectives focused on retail theft in Roseburg. DINT reported that two people were arrested on theft and drug-related charges:

  • Sean McCraw, 37, of Roseburg, was lodged at the Douglas County Jail on charges of second-degree theft, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, fentanyl.
  • Danielle Warner, 38, of Roseburg, was lodged at the Douglas County Jail on charges of second-degree theft, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, fentanyl.

DINT said investigators are also seeking two additional people in connection with theft cases from the operation, and additional arrests are expected if those individuals are contacted.

The cases are being prosecuted by the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

DINT said targeted enforcement efforts are expected to continue in coordination with local law enforcement partners.
