Heat Lamp Likely Caused Accidental Winston Structure Fire, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Says

WINSTON, Ore. — A structure fire early Saturday morning in Winston was knocked down within minutes after Central Douglas Fire & Rescue crews arrived, according to a release from the agency.
Crews were dispatched at 6:14 a.m. Saturday, April 25, to a reported structure fire on Center Street. Initial reports indicated the back of the home was fully involved in fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy black smoke coming from the front windows of the home, with additional fire involvement in the garage. CDF&R said the fire was knocked down and extinguished within 16 minutes of crews arriving on scene.
Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded with three pieces of fire equipment and one command unit, totaling 10 paid and volunteer personnel. Umpqua Valley Ambulance and the Winston Police Department assisted at the scene.
After an investigation by CDF&R personnel, the fire was determined to be accidental. Officials said it was most likely caused by a heat lamp on the back porch that was being used for baby ducklings.
CDF&R reminded residents to keep appliances away from combustible materials while they are in use. The agency said heating lamps cause several fires each year within its response area.
Community Highlight: Optimum Tech Launches In Roseburg To Offer Local, People-First Technology Support

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A new Roseburg-based technology service has launched with a focus on helping local residents better understand, troubleshoot, and optimize the devices and systems they already use.
"Optimum Tech - Technology Optimization & Calibration", officially launched in April 2026. The business is focused on helping people with home and office technology, from Wi-Fi and computers to TVs, audio systems, printers, streaming devices, and general tech support.
Owner and operator Sean Crouch said the goal is to provide practical help without making technology feel intimidating.
“Helping people get the most out of the technology they already own, with honest service, personal care, and practical solutions,” Crouch said.

Current services include Wi-Fi and network optimization, TV picture calibration, audio system and home theater setup, computer tune-ups and troubleshooting, printer setup, smart TV and streaming device support, data transfer assistance, remote technical support, in-home service calls, technology shopping guidance, and general education for people who simply want to better understand how to use their devices.
The business is based in Roseburg and primarily serves Douglas County, though service may be available in nearby counties as well. Optimum Tech offers both remote support and in-home or on-site visits, depending on the issue.
For Crouch, the business is about more than simply fixing a problem.
“I’m people-first, tech-second,” Crouch said. “A lot of repair services focus only on fixing the issue and moving on. My goal is to not only solve the problem, but help people understand their technology and feel confident using it.”
He said many of the most common technology issues people face include slow computers, email problems, poor Wi-Fi coverage, printer issues, streaming problems, password and account confusion, device setup frustration, and general troubleshooting when people do not know where to start.
The idea for Optimum Tech came after years of encouragement from friends, family, coworkers, and community members. Crouch said he has always enjoyed helping people with technology and saw a local need for honest, friendly support without the feel of a large managed service provider.
He has worked professionally in technology in Roseburg for 10 years. He said that professional experience, combined with patience and a desire to explain things clearly, shaped the kind of business he wanted to build.
“I’m not here to upsell people on things they don’t need,” Crouch said. “I’m here to optimize what they already have and provide honest recommendations when upgrades are truly necessary.”
Optimum Tech also aims to educate customers so they can feel more comfortable with their own devices. Topics may include home Wi-Fi and networks, TV and audio settings, computer and device basics, avoiding common tech frustrations, and making smarter technology purchases.
As a husband and father of six, Crouch said the business is also a way to build something meaningful for his family while serving the community.
“Time may be money, but helping people will always be worth much more to me,” Crouch said.
Optimum Tech can be reached through its Facebook page, by phone or text at 541-670-2719, or by email at support@optimumtechroseburg.com. A website is also being developed at optimumtechroseburg.com.
