Days Creek Charter School Welcomes Daye Stone As Superintendent

DAYS CREEK, Ore. — Days Creek Charter School is welcoming Daye Stone as superintendent, marking a return home for the educator after nearly three decades in education.
Stone currently serves as superintendent and K-5 elementary principal for Prospect School District, where he has worked for the past four years. His background includes education roles in both Montana and Oregon, with seven years of teaching experience and 22 years in administration.
According to Days Creek Charter School, Stone’s previous administrative roles include elementary principal, middle school principal, high school principal, director at a community college, and superintendent. He also has experience coaching football, basketball, and track.
In a statement, Stone said he is “humbled, honored, and excited” to return home to serve the community where he grew up.
“Plainly put... I believe Days Creek is a special place where kids come first and the love for a school community is real,” Stone said.
Stone said he believes education is a journey where students build knowledge and skills by defining purpose, exploring the learning process, fostering curiosity, encouraging voice and choice, and maintaining high expectations.
“As I step into this role as Superintendent of the Days Creek School District, I am deeply honored to rejoin a community that clearly cares so much about its students, staff, and future,” Stone said.
Stone said he looks forward to listening, learning, and working alongside the Days Creek community while building on the foundation already in place.
“Together, we will focus on creating opportunities for every student to succeed, supporting our educators, and strengthening the connections that make Days Creek such a special place,” Stone said.
Sutherlin Secures $10 Million For Water Infrastructure Project

SUTHERLIN, Ore. — The City of Sutherlin has been awarded a $10 million funding package for a water infrastructure project intended to strengthen the city’s long-term water supply.
The funding was announced during the March 30 Sutherlin City Council meeting. City officials said the money will support the Fall Water Basin intertie project, which is expected to provide Sutherlin with a third water source.
The project is intended to add redundancy to the city’s water system, helping protect the community if one source is affected by drought, system issues, or other disruptions.
According to city officials, Sutherlin applied for funding for the project and was awarded a 30-year loan at a 1% interest rate. Officials said $1.4 million of the funding is forgivable, meaning that portion will not have to be repaid.
The funding terms are consistent with Oregon’s Safe Drinking Water Revolving Loan Fund, which was identified in Sutherlin’s 2017 Water Master Plan as a potential funding source for water system improvements. The program is administered through Business Oregon and provides low-interest financing for eligible drinking water projects, with some projects qualifying for principal forgiveness.
The project comes as Sutherlin continues to address long-term water infrastructure needs identified in the city’s 2017 Water Master Plan. The plan stated that Sutherlin’s water storage system was expected to be deficient by 2026 and projected that an additional 0.53 million gallons of storage would be needed by the end of the planning period.
The plan also found that several mid-level and high-level storage areas lacked sufficient capacity, with the exception of the Forest Heights storage tank. It recommended adding tanks or replacing existing tanks with larger ones to address the issue. The plan said increasing storage capacity at mid- and high-level reservoir sites, including Schoon Mountain and Upper Umpqua, could reduce the amount of additional lower-level reservoir storage needed.
City Manager Kurt Sorenson credited city staff and The Dyer Partnership for their work on the application and planning process. Sorenson described the award as “very good news” for the city and for the project moving forward.
The project is not expected to begin construction immediately. Sorenson said the next phase will involve substantial engineering and planning before physical work starts.
Councilor Smalley called the funding announcement “great news” and described the water project as a significant step for the city.
During the same meeting, the city also recognized several employees for service milestones, including Public Works employee John McAfee for 10 years of service and Water Supervisor Alan Taylor for 15 years of service. Sorenson described Taylor as a highly knowledgeable water supervisor and thanked the employees for their work.

Scattered Showers Expected Wednesday In Roseburg As Warmer Weather Builds Late Week
ROSEBURG, Ore. — Scattered showers are expected across the Roseburg area Wednesday as an upper-level low continues moving inland over southwest Oregon, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.
Forecasters said showers will continue through the day before gradually tapering off Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Thunderstorm chances are lower than Tuesday, but the Weather Service said there remains a low 5% to 10% chance for thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon.
Inland areas, including Roseburg, could see a mix of aviation conditions Wednesday morning, with local low clouds or reduced visibility possible in some valleys. Conditions are expected to improve to mostly VFR by the afternoon, though heavier showers may briefly reduce visibility.
Gusty west winds are expected mainly from the Cascades eastward, with gusts of 25 to 40 mph possible. Roseburg and other valleys west of the Cascades are not expected to see the strongest winds.
Showers are forecast to diminish Wednesday night, with only some lingering light showers possible near the coast Thursday morning. Cooler mornings are expected Thursday and Friday, with localized frost possible in some valleys west of the Cascades, mainly the Illinois Valley. East of the Cascades, temperatures may fall into the 20s and lower 30s.
Daytime temperatures are expected to trend warmer Thursday into Friday. By Friday, forecasters said valley locations west of the Cascades, including Roseburg, could see highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Areas east of the Cascades are expected to reach the 60s.
A weak disturbance may move into northern California on Friday, but the Weather Service said dry weather is expected to continue for most areas, with only a slight chance of showers mainly over Siskiyou County.
Rain chances are expected to increase again over the weekend as a pair of upper-level disturbances move through the region. The first is expected to track into northern California Saturday, followed by another weak low moving down from the north Sunday.
The pattern supports additional shower chances Saturday and Sunday. Forecasters said weak instability could also bring a slight chance of thunderstorms, mainly across northern California Saturday, with a lower chance across southern Oregon. A low thunderstorm chance may continue Sunday.
