DFPA Marks Decades Of Involvement In 63rd Annual Douglas County OSU 5th Grade Forestry Tour
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — The 63rd Annual Douglas County OSU 5th Grade Forestry Tour is underway, with students taking part in the longtime educational program rain or shine.
The Douglas Forest Protective Association said it has been involved since the tour first began in 1961. Over the program’s history, it has only been canceled twice, both during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
For decades, the tour has introduced local fifth graders to forestry and wildland fire education in Douglas County. DFPA’s role has included teaching students about the fire triangle, fire suppression strategies, and the importance of preventing human-caused fires.
The annual event has helped connect generations of students with the basics of forest management and fire safety, offering hands-on lessons about the role forests and wildfire prevention play in the region.
Frost Advisory Remains In Effect Until 9 A.M. Friday For Central Douglas County, South Central Oregon Coast
ROSEBURG, Ore. — A frost advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday for parts of Douglas and Coos counties, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.
The advisory covers valleys in Central Douglas County and along the South Central Oregon Coast, including Roseburg, Sutherlin, Canyonville, Myrtle Creek, Elkton, Winston, Camas Valley, Coquille, and Myrtle Point.
Forecasters said temperatures falling below 36 degrees could lead to frost formation during the early morning hours. The weather service warned that sensitive outdoor vegetation could be damaged or killed if left unprotected.
Residents are urged to cover tender plants or bring them indoors until temperatures warm later this morning.
Cold Start Gives Way To Weekend Warmup, Then Showers And Thunderstorm Chances Next Week
ROSEBURG, Ore. — Frosty conditions started the day Friday across Roseburg and parts of Douglas County, but a warming trend is expected through the weekend before wetter weather moves back into the area early next week.
The National Weather Service said a Frost Advisory remained in effect until 9 a.m. Friday for the valleys of Coos and Douglas counties. In Roseburg, Friday’s forecast called for areas of frost before 8 a.m., followed by mostly sunny skies and a high near 64.
Temperatures are then expected to climb through the weekend. Roseburg’s forecast shows a low around 40 Friday night, followed by a high near 74 on Saturday. Clouds will begin increasing Saturday night, with a 20% chance of rain after 11 p.m. and a low around 49.
Sunday is expected to stay mostly mild, with a 20% chance of rain and a high near 70. Rain chances increase Sunday night, when Roseburg has a 40% chance of rain and a low around 49.
A wetter pattern is expected to settle in by Monday. Roseburg’s forecast calls for rain likely Monday with a high near 68 and a 60% chance of precipitation. Rain remains likely Monday night, with a low around 46.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into the middle of next week. Rain is likely Tuesday, mainly after 11 a.m., with a high near 64, followed by more likely rain Tuesday night and a low around 47. Wednesday also brings a strong chance of rain, with a high near 59, before conditions begin to ease later in the week.
By Thursday, Roseburg’s forecast shows just a slight chance of rain with partly sunny skies and a high near 62.
Forecasters said the broader weather pattern across southwest Oregon will shift as a slow-moving low pressure system approaches. While Friday morning brought freezing temperatures and frost to many inland valleys, high pressure is expected to bring a brief warmup before the system increases chances for showers and possible thunderstorms early next week.
The National Weather Service said isolated thunderstorms could develop as early as Monday afternoon, with thunderstorm chances continuing Tuesday. It is still too early to say exactly which areas will be most favored.
Winds are also expected to increase in parts of the region, especially in the Shasta Valley and east of the Cascades, where gusty southerly winds are forecast Sunday through Wednesday.
RIDDLE SCHOOL BOARD SELECTS NEW SUPERINTENDENT

The Riddle School Board has announced that a contract for superintendent of the district has been offered to Erika Dockweiler.
Dockweiler is currently the Director of Student Services at the La Grande School District in northeastern Oregon. She has worked in that district since September of 2021. Previously, Dockweiler was superintendent and elementary principal in the Enterprise School District, elementary principal in the Winston-Dillard School District, elementary teacher, literacy coach and instructional consultant in Lebanon, and day treatment supervisor for St. Mary’s Home for Boys in Beaverton.
The district announcement said there were 24 completed applications for the position. The board interviewed 3 finalists on April 8th. Dockweiler will assume the duties of superintendent beginning on July 1st.
Dan Forbess has been the interim superintendent for the Riddle School District since November of last year. He assumed the position following the passing of Superintendent Dave Gianotti, who died in September, after 21 years of service.
CHILD CARE PROVIDERS TO RECEIVER OVER $3.2 MILLION IN STATE FUNDING

Early learning professionals across Douglas, Klamath, and Lake counties received just over $3.2 million through the Business Oregon Child Care Infrastructure Fund, a statewide initiative supporting construction, renovation and property acquisition for childcare facilities.
A release from the Douglas Education Service District said CCIF was established through House Bill 3005 and is designed to expand childcare capacity and strengthen early learning environments by funding fixed, immovable infrastructure projects that support long-term sustainability.
The release said childcare plays a vital role in the strength and stability of Douglas, Klamath and Lake counties. Yet across the region, providers often struggle with limited space, aging facilities, and the high costs associated with expanding or improving their programs.
Home-based family childcare providers in the three counties led the development and submission of their own CCIF grant applications, while Douglas ESD’s Care Connections & Education provided guidance, technical assistance and resource navigation to strengthen proposals and deepen understanding of CCIF requirements. Through this support, early learning professionals working with Care Connections & Education secured just over $1 million of the money awarded locally for major renovations, new construction, minor repairs and property acquisition across the three counties. Notably, all four home-based family childcare providers supported by Care Connections & Education received grant funding.
