Umpqua Valley Tennis Center To Celebrate Opening Of New Outdoor Courts In May

ROSEBURG, Ore. — The Umpqua Valley Tennis Center is inviting the public to celebrate the official grand opening of Roseburg’s newly renovated outdoor tennis and pickleball complex with a free community event on Saturday, May 9.
The grand opening party is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. at 1201 N.W. Stewart Parkway. Community members are welcome to stop by to tour the facility, play on the new courts at no cost, and enjoy a barbecue hosted at the site.
The upgraded complex includes eight tennis courts, 10 dedicated pickleball courts, along with new lighting, fencing, seating, an improved entryway, and a security system. The project carried a total price tag of about $2.53 million.
Organizers said the event will include free hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as a beer and wine garden for attendees.
The outdoor courts were developed through a partnership between the City of Roseburg and the nonprofit Umpqua Valley Tennis Center. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project was held March 5.
Funding for the renovation came from several sources, including a $750,000 state grant secured by Roseburg Parks and Recreation Program Manager Val Ligon, $523,000 from the City of Roseburg, and $1.252 million in local matching support raised by UVTC from individuals, businesses, and foundations.
UVTC President Eric Ball said the facility has already seen strong use from both tennis and pickleball players.
“The new courts are simply amazing, and super popular,” Ball said in an email Wednesday. “The pickleball courts have been full just about every nice afternoon and evening. The new lighting is excellent, and last week I saw all the pickleball courts full at nearly 9 p.m.”
Ball also said the organization believes the complex now stands out as one of the best combined tennis and pickleball facilities in Oregon.
City Manager Nikki Messenger said during the March ribbon-cutting that the project reflects the value of community partnerships and could serve as a blueprint for future recreational improvements in Roseburg.
“We want to build on this momentum,” Messenger said. “I think this is an excellent model for — if you can dream it, you can build it.”
Adults will continue to pay $2 to use the outdoor courts, while youth 18 and younger can play for free. UVTC also plans to offer a month-to-month option for non-members who want access only to the outdoor courts.
Project design and construction management support came from Roseburg-based i.e. Engineering, while JRT Construction of Oakland served as the contractor.
Two Winston Residents Jailed In Child Abuse Investigation Under Karly’s Law

WINSTON, Ore. — Two Winston residents were arrested this week after police launched a child abuse investigation involving Karly’s Law, according to the Winston Police Department.
Police said the investigation began Monday, April 13, with officers working alongside the Oregon Department of Human Services. During the investigation, authorities identified 33-year-old Ashley Alexander and 25-year-old Peter Homan, both of Winston, as suspects.
Both were arrested Tuesday without incident and booked into the Douglas County Jail.
According to police, Alexander and Homan each face two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment, two counts of third-degree assault, and a probation violation.
Investigators said the children involved in the case are safe. The case remains under investigation with continued coordination between Winston police and DHS.
Oregon Ocean Salmon Seasons Set For 2026, Pending Final Federal Approval

Oregon’s 2026 ocean salmon seasons have been adopted by the Pacific Fishery Management Council, setting the framework for both recreational and commercial fisheries along the Oregon coast.
The seasons are still awaiting final approval from the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, which is expected by May 16. In addition, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to consider adoption of rules for state waters within three nautical miles of shore on April 24.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, salmon fishing opportunities south of Cape Falcon remain shaped by conservation limits tied to several key fish stocks, including California Coastal Chinook, Klamath River fall Chinook, and Lower Columbia natural coho. Even with those restrictions, both sport and commercial ocean salmon fisheries are set to be less restrictive than they were in 2025.
For sport anglers, the recreational all-salmon season excluding coho began March 15 from Cape Falcon to the Oregon-California border. That fishery is scheduled to continue through Oct. 31 between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain, and through Aug. 31 from Humbug Mountain south to the state line. The daily bag limit is set at two salmon.
Mark-selective coho retention will be allowed from June 6 through Aug. 23 from Cape Falcon to the Oregon-California border, unless the marked coho quota of 47,600 fish is met sooner. In September, anglers fishing from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain will also have an all-salmon season with a non-mark-selective coho quota of 27,500.
Commercial troll salmon seasons were also adopted for multiple stretches of the Oregon coast. From Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain, the commercial season is scheduled to run April 14 through June 30, then reopen Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. A coho quota of 7,000 fish is set for September in that area.
Farther north, from Cape Falcon to the Heceta Bank management line, commercial fishing for all salmon except coho will be allowed July 16 through July 31. South of Humbug Mountain to the Oregon-California border, the commercial troll season is planned for April 14 through April 30 and again from May 16 through June 17.
ODFW said detailed management measures for both sport and commercial fisheries are available through the Pacific Fishery Management Council and state fishery agencies.
OREGON’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UNCHANGED AT 5.2 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY

Oregon’s unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in both January and February.
A State of Oregon Employment Department release said in February, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment declined by 5,400 jobs, following a gain of 1,600 jobs, as revised, in January. February’s gains were largest in financial activities which went up by 800 jobs. Losses were largest in transportation, warehousing and utilities; leisure and hospitality; and professional and business services which lost 1,600, 1,500, and 1,300 jobs respectively.
State Employment Economist Gail Krumenauer said financial activities added 800 jobs in February, which was a rare monthly gain for the industry after persistent declines over the past three years. Krumenauer said it employed 99,800 in February, which was down 1,100 jobs, or 1.1 percent since February 2025.
OED said transportation, warehousing and utilities employment was choppy in recent months, cutting 1,600 jobs in February, following a gain of 1,500 in January. It employed 78,400 in February, which was 400 jobs, or 0.5 percent, above its year-ago level and close to the average employment throughout much of the past five years.
The release said leisure and hospitality cut 1,500 jobs in February following a gain of 1,200 in January. During the prior three years, it was remarkably steady, averaging just over 207,000 jobs.
Krumenauer said professional and business services continued its downtrend of the past three years, cutting 1,300 jobs in February and another 2,000 jobs in January. In the most recent 12 months, it cut 8,700 jobs or 3.4 percent. Since February 2025, each of its three component industries contracted by more than 2 percent: Administrative and waste services shed 4,200 jobs or 4.3 percent, professional and technical services lost 3,200 jobs or 2.9 percent and management of companies and enterprises shed 1,300 jobs or 2.7 percent.
The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in February and 4.3 percent in January.
