Sutherlin’s First Unified Comic Con Draws Strong Turnout, Builds Momentum for Future Events

Sutherlin High School’s first-ever Unified Comic Con brought students, families, artists and vendors together over the weekend for two days of cosplay, gaming, booths and other family-friendly activities. Organizers said the event was created after an earlier comic con was canceled, leaving some students disappointed, and quickly grew into a celebration centered on creativity, inclusion and community. Organizers are already hopeful the event can return next year. Read the full story, see photos, and watch video by clicking here.
L&M Custom Builders, Made for Trades Complete Lauren Young Field Dugout Project in Sutherlin

Lauren Young Field’s dugout rebuild in Sutherlin became more than just a construction project. Through the Made for Trades program, students from around Douglas County got hands-on experience rebuilding two dugouts while working alongside contractors and community partners. Organizers say the project helped students build confidence, gain real-world job-site experience and explore future careers in the skilled trades. Douglas County ARES Invites Public To NOAA SKYWARN Presentation In Roseburg

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Douglas County Amateur Radio Emergency Services, in partnership with Douglas County Emergency Management, is inviting amateur radio operators and members of the public to attend an upcoming NOAA SKYWARN presentation in Roseburg.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the OSU Extension Auditorium, located at 1134 SE Douglas Ave. in Roseburg. The presentation will feature Joseph Guerrero, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Medford.
According to organizers, the presentation is open not only to amateur radio operators, but also to anyone in the community interested in learning more about severe weather and emergency communications. Organizers are encouraging attendees to share the announcement widely so more people can take advantage of the opportunity.
SKYWARN programs help train volunteers to recognize and report significant weather conditions, giving the National Weather Service and local agencies more timely information during severe weather events. Local emergency communication volunteers say the training also ties into the broader mission of supporting communications during emergencies when traditional systems may fail.
Douglas County ARES says its mission is to help support emergency communication lifelines in the county if standard methods become ineffective. When activated, ARES members use radio and satellite communications equipment to help ensure critical information continues reaching the appropriate agencies and stakeholders.
The May 19 presentation is expected to last about an hour and a half. Organizers say the general public is welcome to attend.
Rain, Mountain Snow Expected This Week As Another Spring Storm Moves Into Southern Oregon
ROSEBURG, Ore. — Showers are expected to continue across parts of Southern Oregon on Monday before conditions briefly improve Tuesday, followed by another round of rain, mountain snow and gusty winds arriving Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.
Forecasters said scattered precipitation will linger Monday, mainly west of and along the Cascades, with light rain in lower elevations and minor snowfall possible in the mountains. Snow levels are expected to stay between 5,000 and 6,000 feet Monday, limiting impacts for most lower-elevation communities.
A short-lived warming trend is expected Tuesday as a weak ridge moves over the region, but that break will not last long. A stronger cold front is forecast to move in Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday, bringing widespread wet weather back to the area.
Along the coast, rainfall totals could reach 1 to 1.5 inches by the end of Wednesday, with the heaviest rain expected Wednesday morning. Inland west side valleys, including areas in Douglas County, are expected to see lighter but still steady rainfall.
In the mountains, the next system is expected to bring more significant snow. Snow levels are forecast to drop to around 4,000 to 4,500 feet during the Wednesday storm, with moderate to heavy snowfall possible in the Cascades. Forecasters said snowfall rates could reach one-half inch to one inch per hour at times.
A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Tuesday evening through late Wednesday night for parts of the Oregon Cascades north of Crater Lake and above 5,000 feet.
Gusty winds are also expected Wednesday, especially along and east of the Cascades and in higher terrain. Some areas could see advisory-level wind gusts before conditions ease later in the day.
By Wednesday night into Thursday morning, snow levels are expected to fall further, down to 1,500 to 2,000 feet. However, forecasters said lower-elevation snow is not expected to be a major concern because precipitation should taper off quickly by then.
Cold overnight temperatures may also return later this week, with frost and freeze conditions possible in west side valleys Wednesday night into Thursday and again Thursday night into Friday.
Looking ahead, the weather service said Friday and Saturday may turn warmer and drier as a ridge of high pressure builds in. Another weather system could approach the region Sunday, though forecasters said the timing and strength of that system remain uncertain.
For aviation interests, areas of low clouds and reduced visibility are expected through Monday morning before improving later in the day. In the marine forecast, conditions are expected to worsen again Tuesday night into Wednesday as a stronger front brings steeper seas and increased winds offshore.

ROSEBURG DISPOSAL TO ROLL OUT 10,000+ NEW RECYCLING CARTS
Roseburg Disposal will begin rolling out more than 10,000 new recycling carts to customers this month. Each cart will be delivered with a packet of information, including a Recycling Guide and other program details.
A company release said the new carts have wheels for easy maneuvering and attached lids to help keep recyclables dry. Recycling will be collected every other week. A collection calendar is included in the packet. Customers can begin setting out their new cart for collection starting the week of May 4th on their regular pick-up day.
The rollout is supported by Oregon’s Extended Producer Responsibility program for packaging and paper, which requires producers to help fund improvements to the state’s recycling program, which requires producers to help fund improvements to the state’s recycling system. Circular Action Alliance Oregon, the non-profit producer responsible for implementing the program, provided nearly $2 million to Roseburg Disposal for new recycling cats, containers and two new recycling trucks.
Roseburg Disposal owner Dori John said, “These new carts and updated information will make it easier for customers to recycle more at home”. John said, “Please review the Recycling Guide in your packet, follow the set-out calendar, and place recyclables empty, dry, and loose in the cart to help keep materials clean and collections running smoothly”.
