Roseburg’s Growing Collectibles Scene Gets a New Showcase with Cards, Comics & Collectibles

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A new event coming to Roseburg this spring is looking to bring together collectors, players, and fans from across Douglas County while also helping rebuild the kind of hobby communities that took a hit during the pandemic.

Cards, Comics & Collectibles is planned for May 30 at Backside Brewery

Cards, Comics & Collectibles is planned for May 30 at Backside Brewery, with organizer Lane Frost of Umpqua Collectibles describing it as part event, part community-building effort. Vendor space is still available, with Frost saying there are currently fewer than 10 spots left. Interested vendors can reach out directly, message the Umpqua Collectibles Facebook page, or fill out the vendor interest form on the organization’s website.

Frost said attendees can expect a wide mix of booths and activities, including sports cards, trading card games like Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering, and collector Lego sets. He also said the event will feature an on-site tournament for the new Pokémon Champions Nintendo Switch game, along with giveaway promotions in the final weeks leading up to the event.

But for Frost, the event is about more than buying, selling, and tournaments.

“The biggest thing that keeps me passionate about these events is the communities it builds,” Frost said. “Everyone needs somewhere to fit in, and I’m hoping my events can help foster and bring these communities back to how they used to be.”

Frost said Umpqua Collectibles began informally near the end of COVID, when local Magic players were still looking for ways to play and stay connected. He started by hosting online tournaments and helping players source cards and collections. That work eventually grew into larger in-person events, including what he described as the first GP Roseburg tournament in early 2024 at The Hive downtown. Frost said the event drew 53 competitors and became the largest post-COVID event in the area for the game.

“Officially, Umpqua Collectibles was founded shortly after that,” Frost said, adding that interest from other hobby communities helped expand the vision beyond Magic alone.

Today, Frost says Umpqua Collectibles is still largely a one-person operation.

“I used Owner/Operator because behind the scenes it really is a one-man army,” he said. Frost said his role includes everything from buying and selling inventory to vendor outreach, social media, tournament operations, setup, teardown, and running his own booth during events.

While Magic has been the business’s biggest focus so far, Frost said 2026 is a pivotal year, with events branching into Pokémon, Riftbound, Lorcana, Warhammer 40K, and additional vendor-based gatherings.

Frost, who grew up in Camas Valley and has lived in Douglas County his whole life, said his connection to the hobby world stretches back about 15 years. He started playing Magic around age 10 or 11 and quickly became part of the local competitive scene. That experience, he said, helped shape both his passion for the hobby and his desire to create spaces where others can find the same sense of belonging.

“The community really took me in as one of their own and helped raise me to where I am today,” Frost said.

He said he wants to see Douglas County’s hobby communities continue growing, especially as new games and interests bring in a new generation of players and collectors.

“With all kinds of new games that have came out and have been absolutely great, there’s no reason this area can’t have something like this again,” Frost said.

Frost also said the May event is part of a larger vision. While details are still limited, he said a bigger expo is in the works for September - something he described as essentially “CC&C but 10x bigger” in terms of vendors, events, and tournaments.

DFPA Reports Two Fires Near Roseburg and Umpqua, No Threat to Structures

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Douglas Forest Protective Association crews and landowner resources were actively working two fires Thursday afternoon, including a larger fire near Callahan Road in Roseburg and a smaller fire near Tyee Road in Umpqua.

According to DFPA, the larger fire was reported at about 4:30 p.m. on April 9 and is burning in an industrial timber unit near the 8000 block of Callahan Road. The fire, currently being referred to as the Hubbard / Bear Fire, is estimated at 12 to 15 acres.

Officials said there has been little to no fire growth into the surrounding timber, and current weather conditions have helped suppression efforts. No significant growth is expected at this time, and there is no threat to homes or other structures.

DFPA said an official name for the Hubbard / Bear Fire will be released later.

Firefighters were also working a second fire near the 8000 block of Tyee Road in Umpqua. That fire is estimated at about 2 acres.

According to DFPA, the forward spread of the Tyee Road Fire has been knocked down. The fire is currently 100% plumbed and 30% lined, with crews expected to remain engaged until mop-up is complete.

Officials said there is no threat to homes or structures from that fire either.

A more detailed press release with additional information is expected Friday.

The News-Review to End Print Edition, Marking Major Change for Historic Douglas County Newspaper

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — The News-Review will publish its final print edition on April 24, bringing an end to a newspaper tradition in Douglas County that traces its roots back to 1867. The move is part of a broader transition by parent company Lotus Media Group, which says it is shifting fully to digital publishing, mobile delivery, and expanded video production.

For many readers, the announcement marks the end of an era. The modern News-Review was created in 1920 through the merger of the Roseburg Review and the Umpqua Valley News, but its lineage reaches back to the Roseburg Ensign, first published in 1867. Over generations, the paper became one of Douglas County’s best-known local news institutions.

Lotus Media Group says the change is being driven by rising production costs, declining demand for print, and changing audience habits. Beginning May 1, the company says The News-Review will move fully to the NRToday website and mobile app, where local news will be free to access as the paywall comes down. Lotus says the new model will be supported by advertising, along with a premium subscription that offers added benefits including an ad-free experience, a daily e-edition, special publications, premium polls, and additional exclusive content.

The transition also comes with significant staffing changes. Lotus Media Group said 11 positions will be affected as operations move away from print production and toward digital and video content. The company said it plans to provide transition resources, placement assistance, and opportunities for affected workers to apply for new roles within the company, though it also said those new positions require different responsibilities and skill sets.

Lotus also says the shift will include a broader push into multimedia. The company plans to expand beyond traditional written coverage with video, entertainment productions, podcasts, livestreamed events, and features centered on local businesses, restaurants, and community events. As part of that push, Lotus says it has launched in8 Studios, an in-house production company operating from the former newspaper printing facility. The studio is already producing livestreamed events and podcasts and is expected to play a larger role in video news coverage.

In many ways, the final end of print has been building for some time. In July 2025, the News-Review reduced its print schedule from five days a week to one weekly Friday edition while continuing daily online publishing, a sign that the traditional newspaper model was already under strain. Lotus had described the paper just a few years earlier as a five-day-a-week community newspaper serving readers across Douglas County.

The paper and its parent company have also faced other challenges in recent years. In January 2024, a ransomware attack targeting Lotus Media Group disrupted operations and caused the News-Review to miss a print edition, underscoring the operational pressures facing legacy local media companies.

What makes this moment especially significant is that it is not simply the end of a printed newspaper. It is also a major restructuring of a longstanding local newsroom and a clear sign of how sharply the business of local journalism has changed. Across the country, legacy newspapers have struggled with shrinking print revenue, rising costs, and audience habits that increasingly favor fast, online access to news. In Douglas County, those same pressures are now closing the print chapter of one of the area’s oldest media institutions.

By the end of April, a newspaper lineage that began in the 19th century will no longer appear in print. What remains will be a different kind of local media operation, one focused less on the printed page and more on digital updates, mobile access, video, and subscription extras. Whether readers see that as adaptation, loss, or both, the transition marks one of the biggest changes to Douglas County journalism in years.

Thunderstorms, Showers Expected in Roseburg Area Friday Afternoon

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Roseburg and much of western Douglas County could see showers and thunderstorms develop Friday afternoon as unstable weather moves north through Southern Oregon, according to the National Weather Service. The strongest chance for storm activity in the region is expected from roughly 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., with some lingering shower activity possible into the evening, including parts of eastern Douglas County.

Forecasters say Roseburg has an 80% chance of precipitation Friday, with a high near 67 degrees. Storms that do form could bring brief downpours, gusty winds, and small hail. Conditions are expected to remain active Friday night, when showers and another possible thunderstorm remain in the forecast, with rain chances increasing to around 90%.

While the highest thunderstorm probabilities Friday appear to be farther south and west of the Cascades, Roseburg remains in the broader zone where general thunderstorms are possible. Aviation forecasters also noted the greatest Southern Oregon storm activity is expected during the afternoon and early evening, with gusty and erratic winds possible near storms.

The unsettled pattern is expected to continue into the weekend. Saturday’s forecast for Roseburg calls for more showers and a possible thunderstorm, with a high near 61 and a near-certain chance of precipitation. Cooler, showery weather may also continue into early next week as another weather system approaches the region.

In the mountains, snow levels are expected to fall to around 5,500 to 6,000 feet Friday night, with additional snowfall possible in the Cascades through the weekend.

COLLEGE EXPLORES PARTNERSHIP TO EXPAND CHILDCARE ACCESS

Article by KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Community College is advancing plans to support expanded childcare services in Douglas County by providing space for a partner organization to operate a licensed childcare facility serving infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children.

A college release said that while childcare services are not a part of UCC’s core mission, the college is committed to supporting community needs and leveraging strong local partnerships to address critical gaps. With several underutilized facilities available, UCC identified an opportunity to dedicate space to help meet the growing demand for childcare in the region.

UCC President and CEO Dr. Rachel Pokrandt said, “This is a win for Douglas County”. Pokrandt said, “We are proud to be part of a collaborative effort to help solve one of the most pressing challenges facing local families”.

The site under consideration is the former Wooley Center at Fir Grove Park on West Harvard Avenue in Roseburg. The college recently vacated the building after relocating its GED, Adult Basic Education, and English as a Second Language programs to expanded and remodeled facilities in downtown

The release said UCC will not operate the childcare facility. Instead, the college plans to donate use of the building and its grounds to a qualified partner organization with expertise in early childhood education. The proposed project would include remodeling the existing structure and potentially expanding the site to create spaces designed for childcare services.

The project remains in its early stages and construction is not expected to begin for at least a year.

The initiative is tied to a proposed $1 million federal funding request supported by Congresswoman Val Hoyle. If appropriated, the funds would support design completion and the start of construction.

Pokrandt said, “Childcare availability is a crisis for many families in Douglas County, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to invest in the community in this way.”
