The Kent Creek Fire southwest of Winston has reached its final mapped size of 16.4 acres as crews move deeper into mop-up work.
The fire was first reported at about 1:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, roughly 5.6 miles southwest of Winston. Firefighters spent the day building containment around the fire and have now completed 100% control line and hose lay around the entire perimeter.
With containment objectives met, crews are now focused on mop-up. That work includes searching for and putting out remaining hot spots within the first 50 feet of the fire line, while continuing toward the 200-foot mop-up standard around the edge of the fire.
Additional support from contract resources and neighboring Oregon Department of Forestry districts helped firefighters make progress throughout the day. Contract water tenders were used to shuttle water into the area, helping maintain a steady supply for crews working on the fire line.
Crews from ODF’s Southwest Oregon and West Lane districts are expected to be released from the incident at the end of shift and return to their home districts for initial attack coverage.
The fire will remain staffed and patrolled around the clock until mop-up is complete and crews are confident remaining heat has been extinguished.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officials said this will be the final public update on the Kent Creek Fire, due to the completion of containment objectives and the transition into mop-up. Residents and travelers may still see smoke in the area over the next several days as that work continues.
