Firefighters are continuing suppression and mop-up work Friday on the Kent Creek Fire, located about 5.6 miles southwest of Winston.

The fire was reported at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, prompting a response from the Douglas Forest Protective Association. When crews arrived, they found a slash fire burning in an inactive timber harvest unit. The fire was initially estimated at about 5 acres.

DFPA crews began an aggressive initial attack overnight, using four engines, a dozer, a water tender and overhead command staff. Additional resources were called in as crews worked through the early morning hours.

Firefighters were able to stop the forward spread of the fire. The Kent Creek Fire is now estimated to be between 12 and 15 acres. Officials said the fire is 100% trailed, with hose line secured around approximately 40% of the perimeter.

Day shift resources have since taken over the incident. Current resources include crews and equipment from the Oregon Department of Forestry’s West Lane and Southwest Oregon districts, two water tenders, two dozers and two contracted 20-person hand crews.

Smoke may remain visible in the area throughout the day as firefighters continue suppression and mop-up operations. Residents and drivers near the area should expect to see smoke and fire personnel working nearby.

The cause of the Kent Creek Fire remains under investigation.

No homes or structures are currently threatened.
