Vehicle Fire Sparks Grass Fire in Hay Field Near Longhorn Lane

A vehicle fire in a hay field near Longhorn Lane drew a response from multiple fire agencies Tuesday evening after reports of an explosion and a growing grass fire.

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 4:43 p.m. on June 2 after callers reported a vehicle on fire in a hay field. Early information indicated the fire had spread to about one-quarter acre, with a home nearby, though the flames were not reported to be moving toward the structure at the time.

When the first fire crew arrived, they found the vehicle fully involved in the field. Crews from Lookingglass Rural Fire District and the Douglas Forest Protective Association also responded as part of the initial attack.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading outside the containment area.

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded with one brush unit, two fire engines, one water tender and one command vehicle. Eight CDF&R personnel were assigned to the incident.

Fire officials used the incident as a reminder that Douglas County is now in fire season. Dry conditions, combined with even light wind, can cause fires to spread quickly in grass and other fuels.

Residents are encouraged to follow current public-use restrictions and check with their local fire agency if they have questions about what activities are allowed during fire season.
