Final Update: The fire near Interstate 5 milepost 144 near Oakland has been officially named the Turkey Hill Fire.

DFPA says the fire was GPS-mapped at 10.9 acres. Firefighters have completed trail construction around the full perimeter and have moved into mop-up operations.

All lanes of I-5 have reopened to normal traffic. Smoke may still be visible in the area while crews continue working.

Drivers should remain alert for firefighters and equipment near the roadway.

No evacuations were issued, and no structures were threatened during the incident.

DFPA said this will be the final public update for the Turkey Hill Fire.


Update, 6 p.m.: DFPA says the fire has officially been named the Turkey Hill Fire.

Firefighters have made progress with help from aerial resources, and the forward spread of the fire has been knocked down. The fire is now 40% trailed.

Aerial resources have been released from the incident, while ground crews will continue suppression work.

The southbound lane closure on I-5 remains in place. Smoke is expected to remain visible in the area as crews continue working.


DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — A grass fire along Interstate 5 southbound brought multiple fire and law enforcement agencies to the area Sunday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. on June 21 near milepost 144. Early estimates placed the fire at about seven acres.

Douglas Forest Protective Association crews are leading the response, with help from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Oakland Rural Fire District, Sutherlin Fire Department and North Douglas Fire & EMS.

Firefighters are working from both the ground and air. DFPA has six engines assigned to the incident, along with a dozer and a 10-person crew. Aircraft support includes air attack and a helicopter.

Traffic is also being affected. ODOT has reduced southbound I-5 to one lane near the fire area so crews can work safely. Drivers should expect slower traffic, reduce speed and watch closely for emergency personnel and traffic control.

Officials said no structures are currently threatened and no evacuation notices have been issued.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
