Mother, Three Children Killed in Eagle Point Camper Fire
A mother and her three children under the age of 10 died Sunday in a fifth-wheel camper fire in rural Eagle Point. One family member escaped with minor injuries. Investigators believe the fire was a tragic, non-criminal accident.
EAGLE POINT, Ore. - A mother and her three young children were killed Sunday afternoon when a fire engulfed a fifth-wheel camper in rural Eagle Point, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire was reported at 12:47 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in the 600 block of Leafwood Drive.
By the time first responders arrived, the fifth-wheel was fully engulfed, with four family members trapped inside. A mother and three children, all under the age of 10, died in the fire.
One other family member was able to escape and suffered minor injuries.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded alongside Jackson County Fire District 3 and Oregon Department of Forestry firefighters. Authorities said the flames had begun spreading to nearby structures and surrounding wildland, but crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire before it reached nearby forest lands.
Southern Oregon Public Safety Chaplains also responded to provide support to those affected by the tragedy.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what caused the fire. At this early stage, however, the sheriff’s office said the fire is believed to have been a tragic accident and that there are no indications of criminal activity.
The investigation remains open while authorities await autopsies and forensic identification.
Because of the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the ages of the children, the sheriff’s office said the names of the victims will not be released.
The loss has left a family grieving after an unimaginable tragedy. Our thoughts are with the surviving family members, loved ones and first responders affected by Sunday’s fire.
