Detectives are investigating the death of a 2-year-old child who was reported missing Wednesday morning in rural Central Point. The child was found deceased about an hour after the search began.

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — Detectives with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a 2-year-old child who was reported missing early Wednesday morning in rural Central Point.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon received a report of a missing child at approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, in the 9900 block of Blackwell Road.

Jackson County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police troopers responded and immediately began searching the area.

Authorities said the child was found deceased at approximately 5:41 a.m.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under investigation. Detectives with the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit, or MADIU.

MADIU includes investigators from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, Central Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities have not released the child’s identity or additional details about how the child died.

The sheriff’s office said the case remains open and detectives are continuing to follow leads. No additional information was available for release as of Wednesday afternoon.
