ROSEBURG, Ore. - Deputies are investigating after a late-night disturbance involving reported gunfire left three people injured early Tuesday morning.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just after midnight on Tuesday, June 30, to the 2200-block of Colonial Road after receiving reports of a disturbance and multiple gunshots in the area.
When deputies arrived and located the residence involved, they found it vacant. No one was at the scene, but investigators noted empty beer cans and other signs that a gathering had recently taken place there.
A short time later, law enforcement learned that three people had arrived at Mercy Medical Center seeking treatment for injuries connected to the incident. They were identified as 21-year-old Beto Cortez of Coos Bay, 21-year-old Christopher Bocanegra of North Bend, and 21-year-old Carlos Lopez of Roseburg.
The three told investigators they had heard about a party at the residence through social media and decided to attend. During the gathering, Cortez reportedly was confronted by a male who accused him of stealing. Deputies said the confrontation escalated when the male allegedly swung at Cortez, leading to a physical fight.
The victims reported that about 10 additional people then joined in the altercation. Bocanegra and Lopez told investigators they tried to step in and separate Cortez from the group but were also assaulted by multiple people.
After the three were able to get away from the crowd, they ran to their vehicle. They reported hearing multiple gunshots as they fled the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information about the disturbance or those involved is asked to contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and reference case #26-2012.
The Oregon State Police assisted with the response.
