Roseburg Nearly Matches Entire June Rainfall Total in One Day

Roseburg received 0.47 inches of rain Wednesday, nearly matching the 0.48 inches recorded during the entire month of June. Cool, unsettled weather will continue through Monday, with additional showers and possible thunderstorms forecast across Douglas County.

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A strong early September storm delivered nearly as much rain to Roseburg on Wednesday as the city recorded during the entire month of June, according to National Weather Service climate data.

The Roseburg Regional Airport measured 0.47 inches of precipitation on Wednesday, September 2. The airport recorded a total of 0.48 inches throughout June, meaning Wednesday’s rainfall fell just one-hundredth of an inch short of matching the entire month.

Wednesday was also unusually cool. The temperature at the airport reached only 63 degrees, with a low of 53. The daily average of 58 degrees was more than 11 degrees below normal.

June 30 was the last day with measurable rain at the airport before Wednesday’s storm. Only a trace of precipitation was reported on June 29.

Cool, Unsettled Weather Continues

The National Weather Service in Medford said temperatures will remain 15 to 25 degrees below normal Thursday as an upper-level low continues influencing the region.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected across Southern Oregon, with the greatest rainfall totals developing east of the Cascades. Forecasters said thunderstorms located offshore Thursday morning could move into Douglas and Coos counties later in the day.

The probability of cloud-to-ground lightning in the area is estimated at approximately 10 to 30 percent. Additional thunderstorms could develop during the late afternoon and early evening as breaks in the clouds allow limited daytime heating.

Thursday: Showers likely, with a chance of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
Thursday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, with a low near 54. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
Friday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, with a high near 68. New rainfall amounts between one-quarter and one-half inch are possible, with locally higher totals during thunderstorms.
Saturday: A chance of showers before 9 a.m., followed by partly sunny conditions and a high near 76.
Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers, with partly sunny skies and a high near 75.

Shower chances are expected to continue through Monday as the upper-level low remains over the Pacific Northwest. Rainfall amounts after Thursday should generally be lighter, while temperatures gradually rise through the weekend.

More typical September weather is expected to return Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures warming back toward seasonal averages.
