Roseburg Library to Host Smithsonian Space Program Oct. 14

Explore black holes, neutron stars, pulsars, and distant worlds at Roseburg Public Library on Oct. 14. The free program features a recorded Smithsonian presentation followed by a discussion with UCC professor Dr. Paul Morgan.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg Public Library will take visitors on a trip through some of the universe’s strangest places during a free program Wednesday, Oct. 14.

“Our Weird and Wild Universe” begins at 6 p.m. at the library, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. The program features a recorded presentation by Kimberly Arcand of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, followed by a discussion led by Dr. Paul Morgan, a professor at Umpqua Community College and director of its observatory.

Arcand will explore objects ranging from distant black holes that outshine entire galaxies to city-sized neutron stars and pulsars that keep remarkably precise time. She also will discuss worlds orbiting other stars, how astronomers find these objects, and what they reveal about the cosmos.
