Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 225 AM PDT Fri Oct 2 2026

Late summer-like temperatures and humidities are expected through the weekend and into early next week. Recoveries will generally be good to moderate in the valleys, but easterly flow will bring lowering recoveries for the peaks and ridgelines. Poor to moderate recoveries are expected for the peaks/ridgelines Sunday morning, but winds are expected to be well below critical thresholds. A weak low pressure disturbance approaches the region Sunday night into Monday, which may bring a low chance (5%) of thunderstorms to Modoc County.

Roseburg Could Reach 88 Degrees Sunday as October Starts With Summerlike Warmth

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - October is starting with weather that feels more like late summer, with temperatures expected to climb through the weekend and remain well above normal into next week.

The National Weather Service in Medford said inland temperatures will peak Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, with highs across the region running 10 to 20 degrees above seasonal averages. A strengthening high-pressure system will keep conditions warm and dry.

The weather will also bring some elevated fire weather concerns, although forecasters do not expect critical conditions. The greatest concerns are across northern California and east of the Cascades.

In valleys west of the Cascades, afternoon humidity is expected to fall to roughly 20% to 35% this weekend. Winds should remain generally light, and humidity is expected to recover overnight in valley locations, helping moderate the fire weather threat.

Higher slopes and ridgelines will see less overnight relief. Light easterly winds and dry air aloft are expected to limit humidity recovery, particularly Saturday night into Sunday morning. Even there, winds are forecast to remain below critical fire weather thresholds.

With dry grasses and leaves still present, the Weather Service urged people to use caution during activities that could create a spark.

Warm, dry weather is expected to continue through the early and middle parts of next week, with regional temperatures remaining about 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

A weak disturbance passing through northern California Sunday night into Monday could bring a very small chance of showers or thunderstorms to Modoc County. That chance is estimated at 5% and does not extend to Douglas County in the forecast discussion.

Temperatures are expected to ease closer to seasonal averages toward the end of next week as another weather system approaches from the northwest.

The closure begins at 8 a.m. Oct. 5 and is scheduled to remain in place until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, according to the City of Roseburg. It will affect the stretch extending east from Old Melrose Road toward Lookingglass Road.

Safari Zone Card Shop Opens in Winston

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

WINSTON, Ore. - Safari Zone, a new card shop carrying sports cards, Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh!, is celebrating its grand opening Thursday, Oct. 1, at 157 NW Douglas Boulevard.

Owners Kyle and Ed, who go by Clueless Sports and Ed541shop, said the shop offers card sales and trades, and welcomes collectors of all ages. They also encouraged visitors to bring in their collections, saying they enjoy seeing what other people collect.

The shop’s regular hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“All ages welcome,” the owners said in a message to The Roseburg Receiver. “Please feel free to come by and check us out.”

The owners’ brands also have an online presence. Clueless Sports operates an online store listing sports card products and protective sleeves, while Ed541Shop’s Whatnot profile focuses on Pokémon and advertises buying, selling, and trading. Those online listings do not necessarily reflect Safari Zone’s in-store inventory.

Kyle and Ed invited community members to stop by Safari Zone to browse, trade, or share their interest in collecting.

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Awarded Grant for Protective Gear Cleaning Equipment

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Authority has been awarded a $67,554.54 federal grant to purchase six commercial washer-extractors designed to clean firefighters’ protective clothing.

The funding comes through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The authority will contribute a $6,755.46 local match, bringing the total project investment to $74,310.

One machine will be installed at each of the department’s six staffed fire stations, allowing crews to clean their turnout gear at their assigned station after emergency calls.

According to the department, firefighters can encounter hazardous contaminants during structure fires and other incidents. The specialized equipment will make proper gear cleaning more accessible and consistent, supporting the department’s efforts to reduce exposure and protect firefighters’ long-term health.

The announcement also acknowledged the recent deaths of two young retired members who died from cancer. The department said both had spent years serving their communities, and their losses have reinforced its commitment to caring for current and future firefighters.

“This grant is about more than just purchasing six washing machines; it’s about taking care of our people,” the department said in its announcement.

The washer-extractors will be installed once the grant purchasing process is complete. An installation date was not provided.

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Authority is a partnership between Douglas County Fire District No. 2 and Winston-Dillard Fire District. It provides fire, rescue, and emergency medical services and responds to thousands of emergency calls each year throughout its Douglas County service area.

Ford Family Foundation Hiring Senior Communications Associate in Roseburg

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

The Ford Family Foundation is hiring a senior communications associate in Roseburg to lead its social media strategy and help share stories from rural communities across Oregon and Siskiyou County, California.

The position offers an annual salary of $87,000 to $92,000, depending on experience. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, though the Foundation says the opening may close earlier depending on the number of applicants.

Based at the Foundation’s Roseburg office, the role follows a hybrid schedule requiring at least three days per week in the office. Employees must live within 40 miles of Roseburg. A relocation package is available for candidates who need to move to meet that requirement.

Reporting to the communications director, the associate will oversee social media planning, content calendars, digital campaigns, and audience engagement. The work also includes writing and editing stories, developing visual and multimedia content, updating the Foundation’s website, and using analytics to assess how communications are reaching audiences.

The associate will work with teams across the Foundation to communicate about rural communities, grants, partnerships, research, and policy priorities. The posting emphasizes the ability to turn complex information into clear, accessible content while managing several projects and deadlines.

Applicants should have at least five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, digital engagement, social media management, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related work. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.

Social media expertise is a central qualification. The Foundation is seeking someone with experience independently developing, carrying out, and evaluating an organization’s social media strategy across multiple platforms. Experience with nonprofit, philanthropic, rural, community-based, or public-interest organizations is preferred.

Benefits include paid time off and holidays, health and dental insurance, a health savings account, a retirement plan, professional development opportunities, an employee assistance program, and rejuvenation leave.

Founded in 1957 by Kenneth W. Ford and Hallie E. Ford, The Ford Family Foundation supports rural communities in Oregon and Siskiyou County. Its main office is in Roseburg.

Applicants must submit a letter of interest explaining why they are a strong fit, what draws them to the Foundation, and specific examples of their communications work. Portfolios, work samples, content calendars, and campaign plans are encouraged but optional. The Foundation asks applicants to use their own voice and perspective in their letters.

The full job description and application information are available through the Foundation’s online job posting.

Glide Volunteers Invited to Join Ninth Annual Highway 138E Fall Cleanup

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

GLIDE, Ore. - A community cleanup that began with eight miles of Highway 138E is entering its ninth year, with volunteers invited to help pick up roadside litter Oct. 16, 17, and 18.

AAH Glide’s fall cleanup is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. Volunteers can choose one of the three days and pick up supplies at 9 a.m. before heading to an assigned half-mile section of highway.

Organizers are asking participants to give about an hour of their time. Safety vests, grabbers, bag rings, and bright orange trash bags will be provided.

The group originally adopted the stretch between mileposts 12 and 20. Its coverage has grown as more residents asked to have their areas included and additional volunteers joined the effort.

During the April 2026 cleanup, 50 volunteers covered 12.5 miles and filled 70 bags with litter. ODOT collects the filled bags after the cleanup weekend.

The effort brings together volunteers from across the community, including local teachers, Job Corps and Umpqua Community College students, Glide High School National Honor Society members, Glide Fire Department volunteers, and the high school’s varsity volleyball players.

Barbara Pieske, Lori Pedersen, and Katrina Mchmore are co-coordinating this year’s fall event.

The invitation is simple: Pick a day, lend an hour, and help care for a stretch of highway close to home.
