Douglas County Fire Agencies Receive Wildfire Season Staffing Grants

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — Twenty Douglas County fire agencies have been awarded 2026 Wildfire Season Staffing Grants through the Oregon State Fire Marshal, giving local departments added support as fire season approaches.

The grants are designed to help local fire agencies increase firefighter availability during the months when wildfire risk is highest. According to OSFM, the program was established in 2022 to help keep fires small and away from communities by improving early response.

In Douglas County, the agencies awarded funding include:

  • Azalea Rural Fire Protection District
  • Camas Valley Rural Fire District
  • Canyonville South Umpqua Fire Department
  • Days Creek Rural Fire District
  • Elkton Rural Fire Protection District
  • Fair Oaks Rural Fire Protection District
  • Gardiner Rural Fire Protection District
  • Glendale Rural Fire Protection District
  • Kellogg Rural Fire District
  • Lookingglass Rural Fire District
  • Myrtle Creek Fire Department
  • North Douglas County Fire & EMS
  • Oakland Rural Fire Protection District
  • Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department
  • Riddle Fire Protection District
  • Scottsburg Rural Fire District
  • Sutherlin Fire Department
  • Tenmile Rural Fire Protection District
  • Tiller Rural Fire District
  • Tri City Rural Fire Protection District 4

The grant can provide up to $35,000 per agency, with the 2026 grant period running from May 1 through Oct. 31. Funding is awarded as a one-time lump sum after grant agreements are completed.

For smaller and rural fire districts, the added staffing support can make a meaningful difference during the summer months. Many agencies cover large areas with limited resources, and having additional firefighters available can help crews respond more quickly to wildfires, medical calls, crashes, and other emergencies.

Kellogg Rural Fire District was among the local agencies to announce its award this week, saying the funding will help keep firefighters staffed and ready for rapid initial response during the upcoming wildfire season.

“Early response is critical, and this grant plays a key role in stopping fires before they grow into larger, more dangerous incidents,” the district said in its announcement.

The grants come as fire agencies across Douglas County prepare for warmer, drier months. Early response is often one of the most important factors in preventing small fires from becoming larger incidents that threaten homes, property, and natural resources.

OSFM says the program is part of a broader effort to improve local fire readiness and help communities better prepare for wildfire season.

Oregon Unemployment Rate Holds At 5.2% In March As Payroll Jobs Decline

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Oregon’s unemployment rate remained unchanged in March, while the state continued to see a slowdown in payroll jobs, according to new figures from the Oregon Employment Department.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.2% in March, the same as February. Nationally, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.3% in March, down slightly from 4.4% in February.

While the unemployment rate held steady, Oregon employers reported another monthly drop in jobs. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment fell by 4,800 jobs in March, following a revised loss of 6,900 jobs in February.

Retail trade was one of the few bright spots, adding 900 jobs in March after gaining 800 in February. Even with that improvement, the sector remained below where it was a year earlier. Retail trade was down 1,900 jobs compared with March 2025, with motor vehicle and parts dealers seeing the largest decline among published retail categories.

The largest job losses in March came from professional and business services, which dropped 2,400 jobs. The sector has been in a longer slide, losing 10,600 jobs over the past year, a decline of 4.1%.

Government employment also continued to soften. After reaching a recent high in September, government jobs have fallen by 5,500 statewide. Federal government employment was down 3,000 jobs from its recent high in October 2024, while local government employment has also trended downward over the past several months.

Other March changes included:

  • Financial activities, down 600 jobs
  • Leisure and hospitality, down 600 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis
  • Other services, down 600 jobs
  • Wholesale trade, down 300 jobs
  • Transportation, warehousing, and utilities, down 300 jobs
  • Construction, manufacturing, mining and logging, information, and private educational services were essentially unchanged

Unadjusted payroll employment increased by 900 jobs from February to March, but the gain was weaker than the normal seasonal increase expected for the month. That is why the seasonally adjusted figure showed a decline.

The Oregon Employment Department said county and metropolitan area unemployment and jobs data for March are expected to be released Tuesday, May 5. The next statewide unemployment report, covering April, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20.

Oakland’s 22nd Annual Car Show & Shine Set For Saturday

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

OAKLAND, Ore. — Historic Oakland will trade its usual quiet downtown charm for chrome, classics, music, and family fun this Saturday as the 22nd Annual Oakland Car Show & Shine rolls into town.

The free, all-ages event is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in historic downtown Oakland. Organizers say classic cars from across the region will line the street for one of the community’s signature spring events.

The day will include live entertainment, awards in multiple categories, and plenty of time for visitors to walk through downtown and check out vintage vehicles. The event poster lists a $15 vehicle registration fee, with goodie bags for the first 100 registered vehicles.

According to the Oakland Car Show & Shine website, registration runs from 8 to 10 a.m., with the show officially beginning at 10 a.m. Live music by Velvet Whiskey is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Visitors can vote for their favorite cars from 10 a.m. to noon, with ballots available at the registration booth. Winners and awards will be announced at the main stage at 2:30 p.m., and the event wraps up at 3 p.m.

Vehicle registration may be completed by mail, email, or at the show. The website notes that all pre-registrations must have been received by May 1, but day-of registration will still be available with cash payment. Vehicles should be 1989 or older, street legal, and insured. Parking is first come, first served, with no reserved spots.

The show includes several car and truck classes, including antique vehicles, decade-based car categories from the 1930s through 1989, a modified open class, and truck classes for 1959 and older and 1960 through 1989.

Organizers are also encouraging visitors to enjoy Oakland’s local eateries and downtown businesses while they are in town. The event is presented by Oakland Community Theater, which says the annual show helps support its local theater work and community programs.

NIGHTTIME PAVING WILL CLOSE LOCAL ROAD APPROACHES IN THE GREEN DISTRICT

Article by KQEN News Radio

Drivers in the Green District should watch for nighttime road closures and detours this week as the Oregon Department of Transportation and prime contractor Rocky Mountain Construction pave local road approaches at two Oregon 42 intersections.

Dan Latham of ODOT said paving work is scheduled from 7:00 p.m.to 7:00 a.m. each night, though the contractor may adjust the hours and set up traffic control devices ahead of time.

Latham said local detours will be provided at each location:

  • Roberts Creek Road on Tuesday night: When the north end of Roberts Creek Road is closed at the highway, local drivers can detour through Brittney Avenue and Grange Road to connect with Oregon 42.
  • Old Highway 99 on Wednesday night: When Old Highway 99 is closed at the Oregon 42 intersection, local drivers can use Happy Valley Road and Carnes Road to reach Oregon 42.
  • Grant Smith Road on Thursday night: When the west end of Grant Smith Road is closed at the highway, drivers can take Ingram Drive, Speedway Road and Old Highway 99 to reach Oregon 42.

Latham said most approaches are fairly short, about 20-30 feet, and may be completed before sunrise. The Old Highway 99 approach is much longer and will likely take the full night.

Paving schedules are subject to change without notice, but ODOT will attempt to keep the local community informed of any changes. Drivers are encouraged to watch roadside message boards at each end of the work area.

On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the northbound off-ramp at Winston Exit 119 is scheduled to be closed from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. for deep pavement repairs. Latham said trucks are advised to continue north to the West Harvard Avenue Exit 124 and turn around to reach Exit 119 from the southbound direction. Smaller vehicles can use the nearer freeway interchanges to turn around.

Article by KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and Roseburg Public Library invite the public to a presentation by “Birds of Crater Lake” author Stewart Janes at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14th.

From the Clark’s nutcracker to the white-crowned sparrow, the guide provides species accounts of the most characteristic birds found in the park. Accompanied by detailed color photographs by Jim Livaudais, each entry also includes the scientific name, description and distribution along with a short narrative. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the program.

Janes is a professor emeritus of biology at Southern Oregon University. He served several years as a board member for the Crater Lake Natural History Association.
