Hot, dry, and breezy/windy conditions are expected through today as the thermal trough slides inland. Poor recoveries are also expected overnight, mainly over higher terrain west of the Cascades. Some gradually improving humidities and slightly cooler temperatures are likely by this weekend. Warm and dry conditions with typical breezes will persist early next week with no thunderstorms in the forecast.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Steelhead fishing on the North Umpqua River will close beginning Monday, Aug. 10, as wildlife officials respond to low numbers of returning wild summer steelhead and increasingly stressful river conditions.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the emergency closure will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 10 and remain in place through Nov. 30, 2026.

The closure covers the North Umpqua River from its mouth upstream to the marker below Soda Springs Dam.

ODFW said fewer than 1,000 wild summer steelhead have passed Winchester Dam so far this year. Biologists do not expect the run to reach the agency's "critical abundance" threshold of 1,200 returning wild fish.

That threshold is used to identify when a population could face increased conservation concerns if declining numbers continue.

River conditions are adding to those concerns. Low flows and water temperatures approaching 80 degrees in portions of the lower North Umpqua and mainstem Umpqua rivers can place additional stress on summer steelhead and make the fish more vulnerable to disease and mortality.

Officials also point to conditions in the Pacific Ocean as a possible factor in this year's low return. Warmer ocean temperatures and last year's marine heat wave can affect the availability of prey as well as the growth and survival of steelhead while they are at sea.

ODFW said low summer steelhead returns are also being observed in other parts of Oregon, suggesting the problem may extend beyond the North Umpqua.

Similar conditions led to fishing closures on the North Umpqua in 2021 and 2023.

Following the particularly low returns in 2021, ODFW developed a fishery management framework specifically for North Umpqua summer steelhead. The framework outlines when conservation closures may be needed to protect the population.

Wild summer steelhead numbers are tracked using video counts of fish migrating past Winchester Dam.

ODFW said it continues to work with partners on projects aimed at improving streamside and in-river habitat, cooling water temperatures and increasing streamflows to improve conditions for native fish.

The steelhead angling closure remains in effect through Nov. 30.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Another hot day is ahead for the Umpqua Valley, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect through 11 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service in Medford said temperatures across central Douglas County are expected to climb into the 95 to 100 degree range Friday. Overnight temperatures are expected to remain relatively warm, generally between 60 and 65 degrees.

The advisory covers much of the Umpqua Valley, including Roseburg, Sutherlin, Drain, Elkton, Myrtle Creek, Canyonville, Glendale, Green, Winchester and Umpqua, as well as the Tiller and Camas Valley areas.

Forecasters say the heat could create a moderate risk of heat-related illness, particularly for people who do not have access to adequate cooling.

Smoke in parts of Douglas County could also make it more difficult for residents to cool their homes by opening windows during the evening and overnight hours.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, limit time in direct sunlight and spend time in an air-conditioned location when possible. The National Weather Service also recommends checking on relatives, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

The Heat Advisory is scheduled to expire at 11 p.m. Friday.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Douglas County Fair is heading into its final two days, with another full day of entertainment, 4-H and FFA activities, carnival rides and live music planned for Friday.

Fairgoers can begin exploring the commercial buildings at 10 a.m. Friday, while the carnival opens at noon. The commercial buildings will remain open until 11 p.m.

Friday night’s featured entertainment will bring rapper Tone Loc to the amphitheater stage for a 7:30 p.m. performance. Throughout the day, local and regional musicians will also take the Garden Park Stage, giving visitors several opportunities to catch live music while making their way around the fairgrounds.

Families have several admission opportunities available during the fair. Children ages 12 and younger receive free admission every day, courtesy of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. Teenagers can receive $2 off admission by bringing a canned food donation.

Friday also brings one of the fair’s more unusual admission specials. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., anyone who participates in the “Dress a Vegetable” promotion can receive free admission.

Agriculture remains at the center of the fair as 4-H and FFA members continue showing their animals and taking part in activities across the grounds. One of Friday’s biggest events is the annual Livestock Auction, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Beef Ring.

Those driving to the fair should plan for a $10 parking fee per vehicle.

Free shuttle buses are also available from Roseburg High School and the First Student Bus Lot in the Green District. Buses will run every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., then increase to every 15 minutes from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m.

With rides, exhibits, livestock, food and entertainment filling the grounds, Friday offers another packed day before the Douglas County Fair wraps up Saturday.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Craft beer, local music and an afternoon of community will come together in downtown Roseburg later this month as the Umpqua Brew Fest returns Saturday, Aug. 22.

The festival will run from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Umpqua Outback, located behind Old Soul Pizza at 539 SE Main Street.

Presented by Umpqua Watersheds, the Brew Fest has grown into an annual gathering built around craft beverages, live entertainment and the connection between clean water and the region's brewing community. The festival has raised money for Umpqua Watersheds since it began in 2010, helping support the nonprofit's education and community programs.

Organizers describe the event as a tasting festival rather than simply a beer-drinking event, with a focus on trying different styles and locally and regionally produced beverages.

Admission is $15 and includes a commemorative Umpqua Brew Fest glass and six tasting tickets. The festival has traditionally featured a range of beer styles including IPAs, stouts, hefeweizens, lagers, reds and homebrews, with selections coming from Oregon and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Wine, cider and non-alcoholic choices may also be available.

Food will also be part of the afternoon. The Umpqua Valley Brewers Guild will serve bratwurst and sauerkraut, while pretzels and popcorn are also listed among the festival offerings. Old Soul Pizza will be serving nearby.

Three Bands Take the Outback Stage

This year's music lineup features three Roseburg-area acts covering everything from Motown and Celtic music to funk and R&B.

Coleen and Co. opens the afternoon from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The Roseburg-based group performs a dance-friendly mix of Motown, blues and rock. Its current lineup includes vocalists Coleen Roberts, Kay Anderson and Lysie Geffen alongside musicians Bruce Gordon, Frank Wambolt, Jimmy Stanton and Michael Mendenhall.

Rovers and Dragons follows from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The local Celtic group mixes traditional influences with an energetic live show featuring reels and jigs, pub songs, bluegrass, comedy songs and sea shanties. The group developed from friendships among musicians with roots stretching from Scotland, France and Wales to Quebec and the United States.

Closing out the festival from 5 to 7 p.m. will be TOB, or That Other Band. The Roseburg-based group has been performing since 2004 and is known throughout the Umpqua Valley for its mix of funk, R&B, Motown and soul. The band has become a familiar presence at local festivals, wineries, breweries and concert series.

More Than Beer

While beer is at the center of the event, organizers emphasize the community side of the Brew Fest as well. Vendors and community organizations are expected to participate, and the festival website says children and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Attendees must be 21 or older with valid identification to consume alcohol.

The 2026 Umpqua Brew Fest is sponsored by Addcox Heating Center.
