ODFW To Host Online Meetings On 2027 Big Game Regulation Proposals

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

SALEM, Ore. - Oregon hunters and other interested residents will have a chance to weigh in on proposed 2027 big game regulations during a series of online public meetings hosted by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in July.

The meetings will be led by ODFW district wildlife biologists, who will present proposed regulation changes, answer questions and gather public feedback.

For southwest Oregon, including Roseburg, Charleston, Central Point and Gold Beach, the online meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, from 6 to 7 p.m.

ODFW said modifications to the Elk General Western Oregon Coast seasons are being considered. Aside from those potential elk season changes, the agency said no major regulatory changes are proposed this year.

The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission is expected to adopt the 2027 Big Game Regulations during its Sept. 18 meeting in La Grande.

How To Participate

ODFW is encouraging people to submit feedback before or after the meetings using its comment submission form. Questions may also be asked during the online meetings through the Microsoft Teams chat feature.

Residents can also view the public meeting notice online.

Meeting Schedule

Draft Materials

ODFW has released several draft materials related to proposed tag numbers and regulation changes:

ODFW provides reasonable accommodation upon request, including assistive listening devices, sign language interpreters and materials in large print or audiotape. Accommodation requests should be made at least 48 hours before the meeting by contacting the Wildlife Division at 503-947-6300.

For additional information, contact Michelle Dennehy at 503-931-2748 or Michelle.N.Dennehy@odfw.oregon.gov.

Public Comment Open On Commercial Crab Rules, Bear And Cougar Trap Check Times

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is accepting public comments on potential rule changes involving commercial Dungeness crab fishing and trap check times for bear and cougar.

The deadline to submit written comments is July 24 at 8 a.m.

The proposed rules are expected to be considered by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission during its Aug. 14 meeting in Salem. Public testimony will also be accepted at that meeting, both in person and remotely.

ODFW said the three-week public comment deadline ahead of Commission meetings is new beginning with the August meeting. The agency said the earlier deadline is intended to give staff more time to review comments and incorporate feedback into final proposed rules, while also giving Commissioners more time to review public input before taking action.

Residents can view the ODFW news release online and submit comments through ODFW’s rulemaking page.

Commercial Dungeness Crab Rules

One proposal would make changes to Oregon’s commercial Dungeness crab rules as part of ODFW’s effort to reduce the risk of whale entanglement.

The Commission will consider rules that include:

  • An electronic vessel monitoring requirement for commercial crab vessels
  • Additional criteria and guidelines for approving experimental fishing gear permits
  • A minor modification to commercial crab surface gear allowances

Public comment on the commercial crab proposal can be submitted through ODFW’s Commercial Dungeness Crab public comment form.

Bear And Cougar Trap Check Times

ODFW is also considering rules that would establish trap check requirements when traps are used to take a bear or cougar in response to damage, nuisance or public safety concerns.

Under current rules, landowners or their agents may use traps to take a bear or cougar that has caused damage, is a public nuisance or poses a threat to public safety without a permit from the department when certain conditions are met. ODFW said there are trap check requirements for traps set for other species, such as furbearing mammals, but no established trap check interval for bear and cougar in these circumstances.

The proposed rule would require traps set for bear or cougar to be checked and all animals removed at least once every other calendar day, not exceeding 56 hours.

ODFW noted that the use of traps would continue to be prohibited during bear and cougar hunting seasons.

Public comment on the trap check proposal can be submitted through ODFW’s Bear and Cougar Trap Check public comment form.

More information about the Aug. 14 meeting, including the full agenda and registration link for in-person or remote testimony, will be available closer to the meeting date.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - As the United States prepares to mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, The Ford Family Foundation is encouraging readers to reflect on democracy, community and belonging through a collection of free books.

The Foundation shared four selections from its SelectBooks collection this month, each tied in some way to the country’s semiquincentennial, the formal name for the 250th anniversary. While the anniversary is officially recognized on July 4, the Foundation said the books can be used at any time to help readers think about the nation’s history, its founding ideals and the work still involved in building stronger communities.

The featured books include selections for adults and young readers, with themes ranging from equality and civic responsibility to gathering, Indigenous history and cultural identity.

“Whether your interest is in history, engaging with your community or introducing children to the values of democracy, you will find a powerful message about the continuous journey toward a more perfect union in each book,” The Ford Family Foundation wrote.

The books are available through the Foundation’s SelectBooks program, which offers free books to readers.

Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality

Danielle Allen’s Our Declaration takes a close look at the country’s founding document and the idea of equality behind it. The Foundation described the book as especially relevant for rural readers navigating division, change and the need for resilience.
