Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 529 AM PDT Thu Aug 6 2026

Hot, dry, windy, and increasingly unstable conditions are expected through Friday as the thermal trough treks inland. East winds and poor recoveries are also expected overnight, mainly over higher terrain and across the east side. Some gradually improving humidities and slightly cooler temperatures are possible beginning this weekend, although dry frontal passage may bring enhanced winds Saturday and again early next week. There is still little or no signal for thunderstorms over the next 7 days.

DFPA Protected Lands

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A Roseburg man died Tuesday afternoon after going underwater in the North Umpqua River at Whistlers Bend Park and failing to resurface.

Douglas County 911 dispatchers received multiple calls shortly after 3:30 p.m. on August 4 reporting that a person had disappeared beneath the water.

Deputies and emergency crews from several agencies responded and immediately began searching the area, despite initially having limited information about the missing person.

During the search, responders learned that people downstream had located the man and were performing CPR on a rock in the river. Emergency crews continued lifesaving efforts, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victim was identified as 44-year-old Jeffrey Andrew Kulluson of Roseburg. His family has been notified.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the death. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said there is currently no indication of suspicious circumstances.

The Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to Kulluson’s family and friends.

Agencies assisting at the scene included the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Search and Rescue, Oregon State Police, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Glide Rural Fire Protection District and the ADAPT Mobile Crisis Team.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the incident marks the fifth water-related death in Douglas County this summer.

Officials are urging people recreating on local rivers and lakes to wear properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets and remain aware of changing currents, water conditions and cold water temperatures.

Drivers heading east on Oregon 42 near Interstate 5 in the Green District will soon see a new traffic pattern aimed at easing congestion and improving the flow of vehicles during busy travel times.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says a zipper merge is expected to be installed during the week of Aug. 9 on eastbound Oregon 42 near the bridge over I-5 and the northbound ramps at Exit 119. An exact day for the change has not yet been announced.

The new setup is meant to address a problem that has become familiar to many drivers in the area. According to ODOT, eastbound traffic often begins stacking into the left lane well before the actual merge point, leaving the right lane underused and causing backups to stretch farther west than necessary.

Under the zipper merge system, drivers will be asked to use both eastbound lanes until reaching the designated merge point, where traffic will then take turns entering a single lane.

ODOT says the idea is simple: instead of merging early, drivers should stay in either open lane and then merge one at a time when the roadway narrows.

How the zipper merge works

ODOT is asking drivers to:

• Use both eastbound lanes as they approach the merge area.
• Continue in either lane until reaching the merge point.
• Take turns merging into the single lane.
• Leave space for another vehicle to merge.
• Use turn signals when merging.
• Avoid blocking other drivers or straddling lanes.

The agency has emphasized that using the right lane all the way to the merge point is not considered cutting in line. In fact, that is exactly how the system is designed to work.

What drivers will notice

The new traffic pattern will come with updated signs and new pavement arrows. ODOT says the goal is to make it clear that both lanes narrow into one shared lane, rather than giving the impression that one lane simply ends.

That change matters because the current setup has encouraged many drivers to merge early, which can create long lines and increase frustration behind the wheel.

By encouraging drivers to use both lanes evenly, ODOT hopes to:

• Shorten the overall length of backups.
• Help more vehicles move through signal cycles.
• Reduce large speed differences between lanes.
• Cut down on aggressive or confrontational merging behavior.

ODOT has also said the zipper merge will not solve every traffic issue in the corridor, but it believes the change should make traffic movement more efficient during heavier periods.

Part of the bigger Oregon 42 project

The zipper merge is one part of a larger Oregon 42 improvement project between Winston and I-5. That broader project includes resurfacing, bridge repairs, ADA ramp upgrades, signal work and other traffic improvements through the Green District.

But for many local drivers, the zipper merge may be one of the most noticeable changes, especially for those who travel the corridor regularly.

With installation expected soon, drivers may want to prepare for the new pattern now: use both lanes, merge at the designated point and take turns.

If drivers follow the system as intended, ODOT believes the result will be smoother and less stressful traffic near one of the county’s busiest highway connections.

Bump in the Road will bring more than two decades of Pacific Northwest performance experience to Myrtle Creek’s Music in the Park on Thursday, Aug. 6.

The free concert begins at 6 p.m. at Millsite Park, located at 231 Volunteer Way in Myrtle Creek.

The Eugene-area band blends contemporary country with elements of pop and rock, creating a lively sound suited for summer concerts, dances and other community events. The group entered Oregon’s country music scene in 2003 after being named the state champion in the Colgate Country Showdown competition.

Bump in the Road has remained active throughout the region in the years since. Archived entertainment listings show the band performing at Oregon venues in 2008 and 2010, including an appearance at the Oregon Garden and shows in the Eugene area.

More recently, the band has become a returning act at Seven Feathers Casino Resort in Canyonville. Bump in the Road performed several nights there in June 2024 and returned for another series of shows in April 2025, demonstrating the group’s continued presence in Southern Oregon’s live music scene.

Thursday’s performance is part of the 39th season of Myrtle Creek’s Music in the Park. The concert is sponsored by J Mann Realty and SOCO Coffee Company. Lauren Young Tire Center is serving as the overall sponsor for the 2026 season.

Admission and parking are free. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Dogs are welcome but must remain under control, and owners are asked to clean up after them. Food vendors are expected to be available at the park and nearby.

Music in the Park is coordinated by the Myrtle Creek/Tri-City Area Chamber of Commerce and supported through community donations, grants and gifts.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - The music of Alabama will fill Sutherlin Central Park tonight as Roll On takes the stage for the final Music Off Central concert of the summer.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, with food trucks scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m. Roll On is set to perform from 7 to 9 p.m.

Based in Vancouver, Washington, Roll On is a tribute band built around the familiar harmonies and country-rock sound that made Alabama one of the biggest country groups of its era. The band’s show includes favorites such as “Mountain Music,” “Dixieland Delight” and “Song of the South.”

Roll On features a group of experienced Pacific Northwest musicians, including lead vocalist and guitarist Brian Pelky, bassist and vocalist Jerry Hatcher, drummer Jerod Moore, guitarist and fiddle player Doug Reeder and keyboardist Dave Lee. Collectively, the musicians have backgrounds spanning country, rock, blues, jazz and touring productions.

Thursday’s performance closes out a seven-week Music Off Central season that brought tribute rock, ’90s country, outlaw country and party music to Sutherlin throughout the summer.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and settle in for an evening of familiar country songs, food and community entertainment.

A heat advisory remains in effect for the Umpqua Valley through 11 p.m. Friday as temperatures are expected to remain near triple digits.

The National Weather Service in Medford said daytime temperatures across central Douglas County are forecast to reach between 95 and 100 degrees. Overnight lows are expected to remain between 60 and 65 degrees, providing limited relief from the heat.

The advisory includes Roseburg, Sutherlin, Drain, Elkton, Winchester, Green, Umpqua, Myrtle Creek, Canyonville and Glendale, along with Tiller and Camas Valley.

Forecasters said the prolonged heat will create a moderate risk of heat-related illness, particularly for people without reliable access to air conditioning or other cooling methods.

Periods of wildfire smoke may also make it difficult for residents to open windows and bring cooler air into their homes overnight.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and spend time in air-conditioned locations when possible. People should also check on relatives, neighbors, older adults and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

Children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles, even for a short period of time.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg climbed to 99 degrees Wednesday, tying the hottest temperature recorded in the city so far this year.

The National Weather Service said the temperature at Roseburg Regional Airport reached 99 degrees Wednesday afternoon. That matched the previous 2026 high of 99 degrees, recorded on June 15.

Despite several stretches of hot weather this summer, Roseburg has still not officially reached 100 degrees this year. The city has now come within one degree of the triple-digit mark twice.

Another hot day is expected Thursday, with temperatures again forecast to approach the upper 90s. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for the Umpqua Valley through 11 p.m. Friday.

Temperatures are expected to gradually cool beginning this weekend, although afternoon highs will remain above normal.

Fire danger has increased from “high” to “very high” across the Umpqua National Forest as temperatures rise and humidity levels continue to fall.

Forest officials said Stage 2 Public Use Restrictions and Industrial Fire Precaution Level 2 remain in effect. The restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during increasingly dry conditions.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, campfires, charcoal fires, briquette fires, pellet fires and other open flames are prohibited outside of designated developed recreation sites.

An exemption allows campfires inside Forest Service-constructed concrete or metal fire rings at approved developed recreation areas. Propane campfires and other pressurized-fuel devices with an on-and-off switch are also permitted when used safely.

Campfires remain prohibited in wilderness areas.

Gas or propane cook stoves, lanterns and similar devices are allowed as long as surrounding flammable vegetation is cleared for at least three feet on all sides.

Additional Stage 2 restrictions include:

• Smoking is prohibited except inside an enclosed vehicle or building, or in an area cleared of flammable material for at least three feet.
• Chainsaw use and other internal combustion engine operations are prohibited.
• Motorized vehicles are limited to designated roads and trails.
• Off-road vehicle use is prohibited, except in areas free of vegetation within 10 feet of a roadway or when minimal travel over bare mineral soil is necessary to reach a dispersed campsite.
• Welding and the use of explosives are prohibited.

Officials reminded visitors that permitted campfires must be completely extinguished before leaving a campsite.

Campers should drown the fire with water, stir the ashes and carefully feel for remaining heat using the back of a hand. The fire should be cold to the touch before the site is left unattended.
