Fire Crews Attack Vegetation Fire Along I-5 Near Milepost 144

OAKLAND, Ore. — A grass fire that burned near Interstate 5 south of Oakland on Sunday has been fully trailed, with crews now moving into mop-up work.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association said the fire, officially named the Turkey Hill Fire, was GPS-mapped at 10.9 acres. Firefighters completed trail construction around the full perimeter, and suppression efforts have shifted into mop-up operations.

All lanes of Interstate 5 have reopened to normal traffic. Smoke may still be visible in the area while crews continue working.

Drivers traveling through the area are encouraged to remain alert for firefighters and equipment near the roadway.

No evacuations were issued, and no structures were threatened during the incident. DFPA said this will be the final public update for the Turkey Hill Fire.

Fire Reported Sunday Afternoon

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. Sunday, June 21, near southbound Interstate 5 at milepost 144. Early estimates placed the fire at about seven acres.

DFPA crews led the response, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Oakland Rural Fire District, Sutherlin Fire Department and North Douglas Fire & EMS.

Firefighters worked from the ground and air as crews moved to stop the fire’s forward spread. DFPA had six engines assigned to the incident, along with a dozer and a 10-person crew. Aircraft support included air attack and a helicopter.

By around 6 p.m., DFPA said the fire’s forward spread had been knocked down and the fire was 40% trailed. Aerial resources were later released from the incident while ground crews continued suppression work.

Southbound I-5 was reduced to one lane near the fire area during the response so crews could work safely. The lane closure has since been lifted.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.

Winston Grocery Outlet Peanut Butter Drive Collects 453 Jars to Help Feed Local Children

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

WINSTON, Ore. — A simple jar of peanut butter can go a long way. For families in the Winston-Dillard area, it can mean one more meal, one more lunch and one more child who does not have to go hungry.

Winston Grocery Outlet recently wrapped up its fifth annual Peanut Butter Drive, collecting 453 large jars of peanut butter for children in the local community.

The donations will support the Lunch Box Express program, which helps provide free lunches for children ages 1 to 18 in the Winston-Dillard area during the summer months.

Jeannie Thiessen with Winston Grocery Outlet said the drive is about more than collecting food. It is about helping local children during a time of year when some families need extra support.

“That will help fight child hunger in our local community, especially this summer as some children would not have a meal otherwise,” Thiessen said.

The store works with Kyle Micken of the Winston-Dillard School District to help get the donated peanut butter where it needs to go.

For Winston Grocery Outlet, the drive has become an annual way to support families close to home. Now in its fifth year, the Peanut Butter Drive continues to show how much of an impact local customers can make when they come together for a shared purpose.

Thiessen said the store is deeply thankful for everyone who donated.

“We would like to sincerely thank our kind customers for the donations of the peanut butter,” Thiessen said. “It touches our hearts to know children are not going hungry.”

The 453 jars collected this year will help support a program that reaches children across the Winston-Dillard community, making sure they have access to food when school is out and regular meal routines may not be available.

For the families who benefit, each jar represents more than peanut butter. It represents care, generosity and a community that is willing to look out for its children.

Firefighters Mop Up 15-Acre Grass Fire Near Crouch Road in Oakland

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

OAKLAND, Ore. — Firefighters knocked down the forward spread of a grass fire near the 400 block of Crouch Road in Oakland on Sunday.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association, Sutherlin Fire Department and Oakland Rural Fire Protection District responded to the fire, which was estimated at about 15 acres.

Crews remained on scene working mop-up after stopping the fire’s forward movement. Smoke may still be visible in the area as firefighters continue their work.

No homes or structures were threatened.

DFPA said the fire was human-related, and the exact cause remains under investigation.

Riverbend Live Opens 30th Anniversary Season Friday With Colin James

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

WINSTON, Ore. — A longtime Winston summer tradition returns this Friday as Riverbend Live! opens its 30th anniversary season at Riverbend Park.

The free summer concert series begins Friday, June 26, with internationally known blues-rock guitarist and singer Colin James. The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Riverbend Park Outdoor Amphitheater.

James has built a career spanning more than three decades, with more than 20 studio albums, multiple Juno Awards, dozens of Maple Blues Awards and a reputation as one of the most respected voices in contemporary blues and roots music. His work has connected him with major names across blues, rock and Americana, and his live shows are known for strong guitar work and a high-energy stage presence.

For Riverbend Live!, his appearance marks the start of a milestone season.

The nonprofit concert series has been bringing free live entertainment to Winston for 30 years, giving Douglas County families and visitors a place to gather along the South Umpqua River for music, theater and community connection.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and run about two hours. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Outside food and picnics are welcome, and a local food truck vendor is expected at each concert. The Humble Lush Mobile Bar will offer beverages on concert nights, except during the youth theater performances.

Pets and smoking are not allowed inside the venue area.

The Riverbend Live! Youth Theater Program returns with a two-night production performed by students ages 8 to 17 from the Winston-Dillard area.

A Milestone Season With an Uncertain Future

While the 30th anniversary season is a celebration, Riverbend Live! organizers have also said the series is at an important point in its history.

The program is run by volunteers, and the current leadership team is transitioning. Without new community members stepping forward to help with planning, fundraising, artist booking, event support and other leadership roles, organizers have said the 2026 season could be the final one.

For now, Riverbend Live! is inviting the community to come out, enjoy the music and help celebrate three decades of free entertainment in Winston.

Umpqua Woofstock Organizer Shares How Festival Helps Local Pets and Families

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

SUTHERLIN, Ore. — Umpqua Woofstock brought dogs, families, vendors and animal lovers together in Sutherlin, but for organizers, the event is about more than a fun day outside.

During a video interview with The Roseburg Plug, Theresa “Tree” Call, one of the organizers behind Umpqua Woofstock, said the festival helps support a larger mission: making basic pet care more affordable and accessible for local families.

Call said Umpqua Woofstock is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises money to host discount vaccine clinics with help from For Love of Paws.

“We want people to be able to get vaccines at a low rate and a free exam,” Call said during the interview.

She said the clinics also help pet owners get connected with a veterinarian, which can be difficult for many families.

“They also get established with a vet, which is another issue,” Call said. “Getting into a vet and being established is a big problem.”

The organization hosts multiple fundraisers and events throughout the year. Call said Umpqua Woofstock holds a Halloween vaccine clinic in October, recently hosted its first spring fair, and started a Christmas Bazaar fundraiser last year.

Those fundraising efforts help support discount vaccine clinics in March in Myrtle Creek and October in Sutherlin.

Call said the number of pets served has continued to grow. At the March clinic, she said the group helped nearly 100 pets, up from around 60 the year before. Organizers expect similar or higher numbers at the October clinic as more people return each year to keep their animals on schedule.

For Call, the motivation comes from the community and the volunteers who help make the work possible.

“The community, people. I love it,” she said. “I have a great board that stands behind me 100%.”

Call said the organization has grown significantly since 2022, expanding from a smaller effort into more events, more fundraising and more help for local pet owners.

“It’s 100% my heart,” she said. “My board members, they’re amazing. My volunteers, they show up.”

Community members who want to support Umpqua Woofstock can find the organization on Facebook or visit UmpquaWoofstock.net. Call said the website includes a donation page, along with contact information for anyone who wants to learn more.

The 2026 Umpqua Woofstock Festival included dog contests, vendors, educational speakers, a silent auction, a 50/50 drawing and family-friendly activities. Admission was free for spectators, with dog contest entry available for $5 per dog.

Roseburg Starts the Week in the 90s Before Cooler Weather and Rain Chances Arrive

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg will start the week warm and dry, with afternoon highs expected to remain above normal before a cooler, cloudier pattern arrives later in the week.

According to the latest forecast, Roseburg is expected to reach about 93 degrees Monday under sunny skies. Overnight temperatures will fall into the mid 50s.

Tuesday will stay warm, though slightly cooler, with a high near 90 degrees. Wednesday is expected to bring another sunny day with a high near 88.

The warm stretch comes as high pressure moves across southern Oregon and northern California. The National Weather Service in Medford says many west side valleys will see temperatures in the mid to upper 90s early this week. The Umpqua Valley is expected to stay a bit cooler, generally in the low to mid 90s.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening for several west side valleys and exposed areas in southern Oregon and northern California, but the Umpqua Valley is not included.

By Thursday, Roseburg should begin to feel a more noticeable change, with a forecast high near 82 degrees. Rain becomes likely Thursday night, mainly after 11 p.m., as a cold front approaches the region.

Friday is expected to be much cooler, with mostly cloudy skies, a chance of rain and a high near 70 degrees. Rain chances may continue Friday night, with lows around 52.

The National Weather Service says the cooler pattern is expected to continue into the weekend, with daytime highs falling below seasonal averages Friday through Sunday.

For Roseburg, the week begins with summer heat but may end feeling more like spring, with cooler temperatures, clouds and at least some chance of light rain.
