Juvenile Rescued From River at River Bend Park in Winston

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

A juvenile was rescued from the river Thursday evening at River Bend Park in Winston after emergency crews were called to a report of someone in distress in the water.

The call came in at 5:22 p.m. on Thursday, June 18. Central Douglas Fire & Rescue said its Technical Rescue Team was able to remove the juvenile from the river.

The juvenile was then taken by Umpqua Valley Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center. Their condition was not known as of Thursday evening.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Winston Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Cow Creek Tribal Police, Adapt and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.

Following the rescue, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue reminded the public to be cautious around local rivers, especially as more people head to the water during warm weather. The agency encouraged swimmers to pay attention to currents, use proper safety gear, closely supervise children and stay alert to changing river conditions and other hazards.

Oregon Sourdough Co. Announces Move From Roseburg to Myrtle Creek

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Oregon Sourdough Co. is moving.

The bakery announced this week that it will be leaving its current location on Stephens Street in Roseburg and relocating to Myrtle Creek.

The new bakery will be located at 236 N. Main Street in Myrtle Creek, just off Exit 108.

According to the business, this will be its final week at the Roseburg location. The last day on Stephens Street will be Saturday, June 20.

In its announcement, Oregon Sourdough Co. said the move was not something the team had originally planned, but after searching for available space in Roseburg and not finding the right fit, an opportunity opened in Myrtle Creek.

The bakery said the new location will give them more room to grow, create and continue serving sourdough breads, pastries and other baked goods.

A grand opening date for the Myrtle Creek location has not yet been announced. The business said updates will be shared on its page as the move gets closer.

Oregon Sourdough Co. thanked customers for their support during the transition and said they are looking forward to welcoming people into the new bakery in Myrtle Creek.

Winston Police Station Receives $2.34 Million Seismic Upgrade Grant

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

WINSTON, Ore. — The Winston Police Station is expected to receive a major seismic upgrade after the City of Winston was awarded more than $2.3 million through a state grant program.

The Winston Police Department announced that the city has been awarded $2,345,358 through the State of Oregon’s Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program, which is administered through the Oregon Business Development Department’s Infrastructure Finance Authority.

The money is intended to help strengthen the Winston Police Station so the building can better withstand a major earthquake or other emergency.

Why the project matters

Police stations are not just office buildings during a disaster. They often become key response centers where officers, staff and emergency equipment need to remain available when the community is under stress.

The planned work is aimed at improving the building’s structural resilience and helping make sure public safety services can continue during and after a significant emergency.

The upgrades are expected to help protect:

  • Police officers and department staff
  • Emergency equipment
  • Members of the public using the facility
  • Essential public safety operations during a disaster

Chief Brandon Sarti said the grant is an important investment in Winston’s emergency preparedness.

“This grant represents an important investment in the safety and preparedness of both our department and our community,” Sarti said. “We are grateful to the State of Oregon for recognizing the importance of ensuring that Winston’s police facility can continue serving residents during emergencies and natural disasters.”

What happens next

The project is not expected to begin immediately.

According to the department, state funding will become available after the bond sale process is completed and the required grant agreements are signed. Project work funded through the grant will begin after those agreements are finalized.

The Winston Police Department said it plans to work with city leadership, state partners and community stakeholders as the project moves forward.

More information about construction timelines and project updates will be shared with the public once those details are available.

National Fire Preparedness Level Raised As Wildfire Activity Increases Across U.S.

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — The National Interagency Fire Center raised the national fire preparedness level to 3 on Thursday as wildfire activity continues to increase across several parts of the country.

The preparedness level, measured on a scale from 1 to 5, reflects the amount of wildfire activity happening nationally and the demand for firefighting resources. A move to Level 3 means fire activity is becoming more widespread, with multiple regions relying more heavily on national support.

According to NIFC’s June 18 update, 74 new fires were reported Wednesday, with 27 large fires listed across the country. Nearly 5,000 personnel, including two Complex Incident Management Teams, were assigned to incidents nationwide.

So far in 2026, more than 33,000 fires have burned over 2.6 million acres nationwide. That is above the 10-year average for both the number of fires and acres burned by this point in the year.

Fire activity is currently concentrated in the Northwest, Great Basin, Southwest and Rocky Mountain areas. In the Northwest, new large fires have emerged in both Washington and Oregon, with crews responding to active fire behavior, threatened structures, evacuations and road closures in some areas.

In Oregon, NIFC listed two large fires Thursday. The Cable Creek Fire, a new fire reported eight miles east of Ukiah, was listed at 1,200 acres with no containment. The Old Emigrant Fire, six miles southeast of Pendleton, was listed at 1,500 acres with no containment.

Washington had several large fires listed, including the Kartar, Roza and Tucannon Mutual Aid fires. Additional large fires were reported in states including Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Nebraska, California and Florida.

Weather remains a concern heading into the weekend. NIFC reported hot and dry conditions across the western third of the United States, with triple-digit heat and very low humidity in the Desert Southwest. Thunderstorms were also expected in parts of the northern Sierra, southeast Arizona, southern New Mexico and west Texas.

While Douglas County is not listed among the current large fire locations in the national report, the increase in national preparedness level is a sign that wildfire season is becoming more active across the West.

Residents are encouraged to stay aware of local fire restrictions, use caution with anything that can spark a fire, and follow official evacuation and incident information from local fire agencies and emergency management officials.

Umpqua National Forest Moving to High Fire Danger, Stage 1 Restrictions Friday

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Unseasonably hot and dry conditions are bringing tighter fire rules to the Umpqua National Forest heading into the weekend.

Forest officials will raise the fire danger level from low to high, and Public Use Restrictions, also known as PURs, will move to Stage 1 beginning at 12 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2026.

The restrictions are meant to reduce the chance of human-caused fires as fuels continue to dry out across the forest.

What Stage 1 Means

Under Stage 1 restrictions, several activities will be limited for people visiting or recreating on the Umpqua National Forest.

Campfires, charcoal fires, briquette fires, pellet fires and other open fires are prohibited outside of Forest Service-constructed fire rings in designated recreation areas. Campfires fueled by pressurized fuel or propane are still allowed. Campfires in wilderness areas are not prohibited under Stage 1.

Smoking is also restricted. It is only allowed inside an enclosed vehicle, inside a building, or in an area cleared of flammable material at least three feet in diameter.

Chainsaw use is limited during the day. Internal combustion engine chainsaws may not be used between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. A one-hour fire watch is required at all other times.

Motorized vehicles must stay on designated roads and trails. Driving off National Forest system roads is prohibited, except for parking in areas with no vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway or making minimal travel over bare mineral soil to access dispersed camping sites.

Welding and explosives are also prohibited.

Campfires Must Be Completely Out

Forest officials are reminding visitors that even fires inside approved Forest Service fire rings must be fully extinguished before leaving a campsite.

The Forest Service recommends drowning the fire, stirring it, and feeling it with the back of your hand. If the fire is not cold to the touch, it is not out.

More Information

Visitors are encouraged to check current restrictions before heading into the forest.
