BEAVERTON, Ore. - A search for a missing 3-year-old boy has ended with Joshua E. Ovalles safe and back in his father’s arms, according to the Beaverton Police Department.

Joshua, who was reported missing Oct. 7 and was the subject of an Amber Alert, was found in Lake Oswego after his mother, Mari Martinez, dropped him off at the home of a trusted individual, police said.

Photographs released by the department captured the emotional reunion between Joshua and his father, bringing a hopeful ending to the search for the young boy.

According to police, Martinez left the area after dropping Joshua off. Officers and detectives from Beaverton Police, Lake Oswego Police, and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office worked together to locate her. A Lake Oswego detective ultimately found Martinez and took her into custody.

Police said the search began after Martinez took Joshua following a Washington County judge’s decision to grant temporary custody to his father. According to the department, the court determined Joshua was in “immediate danger” while in his mother’s unsupervised custody.

Martinez is in Beaverton Police custody and faces charges of custodial interference and kidnapping, the department said. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Beaverton Police thanked the assisting agencies and community members who shared information and helped draw attention to Joshua’s disappearance.

The department closed its announcement with a message of relief: “Most importantly, we are grateful that Joshua has been found safe and is back in his father’s arms.”
