GLIDE, Ore. - A community cleanup that began with eight miles of Highway 138E is entering its ninth year, with volunteers invited to help pick up roadside litter Oct. 16, 17, and 18.

AAH Glide’s fall cleanup is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. Volunteers can choose one of the three days and pick up supplies at 9 a.m. before heading to an assigned half-mile section of highway.

Organizers are asking participants to give about an hour of their time. Safety vests, grabbers, bag rings, and bright orange trash bags will be provided.

The group originally adopted the stretch between mileposts 12 and 20. Its coverage has grown as more residents asked to have their areas included and additional volunteers joined the effort.

During the April 2026 cleanup, 50 volunteers covered 12.5 miles and filled 70 bags with litter. ODOT collects the filled bags after the cleanup weekend.

The effort brings together volunteers from across the community, including local teachers, Job Corps and Umpqua Community College students, Glide High School National Honor Society members, Glide Fire Department volunteers, and the high school’s varsity volleyball players.

Barbara Pieske, Lori Pedersen, and Katrina Mchmore are co-coordinating this year’s fall event.

The invitation is simple: Pick a day, lend an hour, and help care for a stretch of highway close to home.
