Fire Near Burnt Mountain Road Contained After Quick Response Sunday

TENMILE, Ore. - Firefighters quickly contained a small natural cover fire Sunday afternoon near Burnt Mountain Road, northwest of Tenmile, after flames began spreading from a burning stump into nearby slash.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association said crews were dispatched at approximately 2:34 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, to the area of the Coos Bay Wagon Road and Burnt Mountain Road crossing, about 8.3 miles northwest of Tenmile.

Firefighters from DFPA, Lookingglass Rural Fire District and Tenmile Rural Fire District responded to the incident.

When crews arrived, they found a large stump burning between the gravel road and the timberline along Burnt Mountain Road. The fire was slowly spreading into nearby slash.

Ground crews quickly stopped the forward spread before completing mop-up operations. The fire was contained at approximately 1/100th of an acre and later moved into patrol status.

No homes or other structures were threatened.

DFPA also used its fixed-wing air attack aircraft and a contracted Type 2 helicopter to check the surrounding area for any additional fire starts. No other fires were found.

DFPA Urges Continued Caution During Fire Season

Following the incident, DFPA reminded residents and visitors to check current fire restrictions before heading outdoors and to take precautions that can prevent human-caused fires.

During fire season:

  • Campfires are restricted and are only allowed in designated locations.
  • Drivers should avoid parking or traveling through dry, cured grass when possible because hot vehicle components can ignite vegetation.
  • Vehicles and equipment should be properly maintained, including checking for dragging chains or other sources of heat and sparks.
  • Tracer ammunition and explosive targets are restricted.
  • Smoking while traveling is restricted except inside vehicles on improved roads, in boats on the water and in designated locations.
  • Smoking materials should never be discarded into dry vegetation and should be completely extinguished.

DFPA encouraged the public to know the restrictions in place before traveling or recreating and to take steps to prevent wildfires.

Know before you go. Prevent wildfires.
