SUTHERLIN, Ore. — Firefighters have fully lined and plumbed the Cooper Fire near Cooper Creek Reservoir, and the fire is now in mop-up status, according to an evening update from fire officials.

As of about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the fire was reported to be 100% lined and 100% plumbed. Crews will continue mop-up work in the area, and officials said minimal smoke may still be visible as firefighters continue to secure the fire.

The fire, estimated at about 2 acres, was reported Sunday afternoon near Cooper Creek Reservoir in steep terrain. Firefighters made steady progress throughout the day, with the fire reported at 25% lined and 40% hose lay by 4 p.m. By 5 p.m., crews had increased containment work to 70% trailed while completing a simple hose lay around the fire.

Earlier Level 1 evacuation notices issued by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were downgraded, and officials said there are currently no evacuation levels in place.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Sutherlin Fire Department, Fair Oaks Rural Fire District, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Sutherlin Police Department. DFPA’s dozer was also used to strengthen control lines around the fire.

Fire officials reminded the public not to fly drones near wildfires, warning that unauthorized drone flights can create serious safety risks for firefighters and may interfere with suppression aircraft. Officials said drone operators who interfere with wildfire response efforts could face civil penalties, including fines of up to $25,000, and possible criminal prosecution.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

Officials said this will be the final update for the fire Sunday night. A more detailed official press release, including information about resources assigned to the incident, is expected Monday, June 15.
