Facebook users across the world reported widespread problems Friday morning after a major outage appeared to knock out access to the social media platform and its messaging service.

The issue affected both the Facebook app and website, with many users saying they were suddenly logged out and unable to get back into their accounts. Instead, login attempts returned error messages such as “an unexpected error occurred.” On the Facebook website, visitors were met with a message saying something had gone wrong and that the company was working to fix it.

Facebook Messenger also appeared to be impacted, leaving users unable to access conversations or send messages through the platform.

Other Meta-owned services, including Instagram and WhatsApp, appeared to remain mostly online, though some users reported issues with Instagram’s website and related services. The outage appeared to be centered most heavily on Facebook and Messenger.

Reports of problems began climbing Friday morning, with outage-tracking services showing a sharp spike in user complaints. Downdetector, which tracks online service disruptions through user reports, also appeared to experience problems around the same time, making it difficult for some users to check the scale of the outage.

Meta does not operate a public consumer-facing status page for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp in the same way some other technology companies do. The company does maintain status information for business tools, but there was no immediate explanation available for the consumer outage.

It was not immediately clear what caused the disruption or how many users were affected. Facebook remains one of the world’s largest social media platforms, meaning even a short outage can disrupt personal communication, business pages, community groups and news distribution.

Users experiencing issues were advised not to repeatedly reset passwords unless Meta specifically directs them to do so. In widespread outages, login failures are often caused by platform-side problems rather than individual account issues.
