ROSEBURG, Ore. — Cory Wellman has announced his candidacy for Roseburg mayor, according to a campaign release.
Wellman, a Roseburg resident and delivery driver, said he is running as an independent, nonpartisan candidate. His campaign said his platform focuses on public safety, mental health resources, and economic development.
In the announcement, Wellman described himself as new to politics but said he believes his experience in the community gives him a practical understanding of local issues.
“I’m fresh in the political world, but with the things I’ve already learned, I am confident I can serve the people wholeheartedly,” Wellman said in the release.
Wellman said public safety is one of his central campaign issues. His campaign said he views public safety as including law enforcement, emergency services, and access to mental health resources.
“We live in a multifaceted crisis,” Wellman said. “In our rural community, we must bring in more mental health workers and strengthen our partnerships with existing resources. We can no longer disregard what is needed most.”
According to the campaign, Wellman also wants to examine police staffing, recruitment, and retention. The campaign release said Roseburg police are currently below capacity and said Wellman wants to better understand the causes behind staffing challenges.
Economic development is also part of Wellman’s campaign platform. The release said he wants to support local businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, and explore ways to reuse vacant buildings.
“We need to bring back the mom-and-pop businesses we’ve lost,” Wellman said. “Let’s revitalize our vacant buildings instead of letting them sit and decay. These spaces can become centers of connection, innovation, and local pride.”
The campaign described Wellman as a grassroots candidate focused on community outreach, including conversations with residents and door-to-door efforts.
“I’m not running to serve an agenda. I’m running to serve the people,” Wellman said. “This is about making sure every voice in Roseburg is heard, especially those who’ve been overlooked for too long.”
According to the campaign, Wellman plans to file during the candidate filing window that opens June 3. Residents can:
