Roseburg Reminds Candidates, Residents of Campaign Sign Rules Ahead of November Election

ROSEBURG, Ore. - With campaign signs beginning to appear around Roseburg, City officials are reminding candidates, campaign workers and residents that political signs must follow both state law and local regulations ahead of the November 3 General Election.

Under Oregon law and the Roseburg Municipal Code, campaign signs may be displayed beginning 90 days before an election and must be removed within three days after Election Day.

For the upcoming election, campaign signs are allowed from August 5 through November 6.

City Recorder Amy Nytes said signs found in violation of state law or City Code may be removed by the City and taken to the Roseburg Public Works Shop at 425 NE Fulton St. Removed signs will be stored for 10 days to allow owners to retrieve them before they are discarded.

Candidates are encouraged to check their signs and remove any that were placed improperly.

Residents who believe a campaign sign has been placed illegally are asked to contact the Roseburg Public Works Department rather than removing the sign themselves.

“We ask people to please not take campaign signs down from the public right-of-way,” Nytes said. “If you find a sign on your property or you have questions about a sign you see, please contact us.”

Where campaign signs can and cannot go

Campaign signs in Roseburg must follow several requirements:

• Signs cannot be placed on sidewalks or other public rights-of-way. The public right-of-way generally includes the area between the street and private property line and may include sidewalks, grass, gravel or planting strips.
• Signs may be no larger than 32 square feet. The entire campaign message must be contained on one sign.
• Property owner permission is required before placing a campaign sign on private property.
• Signs cannot be placed on or within:
  • Public parks
  • Utility poles
  • Bridges or other scenic areas
  • Fences, trees or publicly posted signs

Voter registration deadline is October 13

The City is also reminding residents that anyone who is at least 18 years old and is not already registered to vote must register by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, to participate in the November election.

Oregon conducts elections by mail, with ballots generally sent to registered voters two to three weeks before statewide elections.

Completed ballots can be returned by mail or placed in an official ballot drop box. Local drop box locations include sites outside the Douglas County Courthouse and Roseburg Public Library.
