Roseburg City Council To Consider Homeless Commission Resignation
Roseburg City Council is scheduled Monday to consider accepting Homeless Commission member Betty Hiatt’s resignation after she cited possible conflicts with her current position and personal life.
ROSEBURG, Ore. — The Roseburg City Council is scheduled to consider accepting the resignation of Homeless Commission member Betty Hiatt during its Monday, May 11 regular meeting.
The item is listed under Commission Reports and Council Ward Reports in the city’s amended agenda packet. According to the agenda item summary, Hiatt resigned from her position on the commission after notifying city staff on April 27.
In an email included in the packet, Hiatt said she made the decision after attending her first Homeless Commission meeting and giving the matter “much thought and consideration.” She said she saw several areas that could cause a possible conflict with her current position and personal life.
Hiatt apologized for any inconvenience her resignation may cause and said she appreciated the opportunity to hear and learn more about what the commission hopes to accomplish.
City staff are recommending that council accept Hiatt’s resignation “with regrets.”

According to the agenda packet, the person appointed to fill the position must live or work within the boundary of the Roseburg School District. If council accepts the resignation, city staff plan to begin seeking interested applicants through local news media, social media and the city’s website.
The Roseburg Homeless Commission is one of the city bodies focused on community issues related to homelessness. In the same council packet, the city also identifies homelessness as one of Roseburg’s ongoing challenges, noting that the city has partnered with local nonprofit organizations and Douglas County on coordinated strategies.
Monday’s regular City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Roseburg City Hall, 900 SE Douglas Avenue. The meeting will also be available online through the city’s website and Facebook Live.
