Pedestrian Killed In Highway 42 Crash Near Winston

A pedestrian died Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 42 near milepost 76 in Douglas County. Oregon State Police said the crash happened as the pedestrian crossed toward Highway 99 without a walk signal.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — A pedestrian died Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 42 near milepost 76 in Douglas County, according to Oregon State Police.

OSP said troopers responded at 10:59 p.m. Saturday, April 25, to a single-vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian.

The preliminary investigation found that a red Ford Focus, driven by Leo Thomas Durden III, 38, of Roseburg, was traveling westbound on Highway 42 with a green light when it struck Vivian Kuntz, 40, of Eugene.

According to OSP, Kuntz was crossing from Grant Smith Road toward Highway 99 without a walk signal. Kuntz was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Durden and his passenger, Caitlinn Ann Durden, 35, of Roseburg, were not injured.

The highway was impacted for about four hours while investigators worked at the scene.

OSP was assisted by Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Winston Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The crash remains under investigation by Oregon State Police.
