Gusty winds will persist yet humidities will trend higher. A front moves inland Wednesday afternoon with temperatures trending significantly cooler as humidities rise. Wetting rain is likely west of the Cascades Wednesday with lighter rain accumulation to the east. Cool overnight temperatures with good recoveries are expected Tuesday onwards, which will help keep fire weather conditions at a minimum.

The Ford Family Foundation Seeks Digital Communications Specialist in Roseburg and Field-Based Director of Community Strategies

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Ford Family Foundation is accepting applications for two newly posted positions, including a communications role based at its Roseburg headquarters and a senior leadership position serving rural communities across Oregon.

Both positions were posted Monday, Aug. 31.

The Digital Communications Specialist will create and manage content for the Foundation’s social media accounts, websites, email communications and other digital platforms.

The position will also work with teams throughout the organization to share stories about the Foundation’s investments, partnerships, research and work in rural communities. Responsibilities include planning and publishing social media content, completing website updates, tracking digital performance and helping promote events, reports and initiatives.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, digital media or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The Foundation is seeking candidates with three to five years of related professional experience.

The position pays between $31.73 and $33.75 per hour, depending on experience. It is a hybrid position requiring at least three days each week in the Roseburg office. Applicants must live within 40 miles of Roseburg.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, although the Foundation notes that the position may close earlier depending on the number of applicants.

The Director of Community Strategies will lead the Foundation’s efforts involving community engagement, leadership development and rural capacity building.

The position will supervise a team of Community Strategists and work with community leaders, Tribal nations, public agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses and other partners. The director will help incorporate local knowledge and community priorities into the Foundation’s broader strategies and investments.

Applicants must have at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as community development, philanthropy, public policy, civic engagement, economic development, education or systems-change initiatives. The position also requires at least five years of experience leading and developing teams.

The position pays between $172,000 and $181,800 annually, depending on experience.

Applicants must currently live in a rural Oregon community. The position is field-based and requires frequent travel throughout Oregon and Siskiyou County, California, estimated at approximately 40% to 60% of the employee’s time. When not working in communities or attending Foundation activities, the director may work remotely.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25. This position may also close before the listed deadline depending on applicant volume.

The Ford Family Foundation is headquartered in Roseburg and supports rural communities throughout Oregon and Siskiyou County through grants, scholarships and community-building programs.

Applicants can review both openings and submit applications through the Foundation’s online employment portal.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Construction is underway on Diamond Lake Boulevard for a new Adapt Integrated Health Care recovery campus designed to expand substance use disorder and behavioral health treatment in Douglas County.

The project will more than double Adapt’s residential treatment capacity, increasing the number of beds from 21 at its current Crossroads facility to 50 at the new campus.

A major feature of the facility will be fully gender-specific substance use disorder treatment. Men and women will have separate treatment programs, living spaces and common areas, providing greater privacy while allowing services to be tailored more closely to each client.

The larger campus will also give Adapt additional space and resources to serve people with a range of needs. Services will include support for substance use disorder, mental health and primary care, including coordinated treatment for clients who need more than one type of care.

Adapt said the expanded facility will allow its care teams to provide more individualized treatment and strengthen the organization’s whole-person approach to recovery.

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of a significant expansion for local recovery services and answers the question many motorists have had about the activity along Diamond Lake Boulevard. Once completed, the campus will give more people access to residential treatment and related health care services close to home.

Firefighters responded to two fires in the Umpqua and Lookingglass areas Sunday, stopping both before any homes or other structures were threatened.

The first response began at approximately 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of Tyee Access Road and Tyee Road in Umpqua. According to the Douglas Forest Protective Association, firefighters investigating a report of smoke found two burning slash piles with flames spreading into surrounding vegetation.

The Bottle Creek Fire grew to approximately one acre before crews lined and plumbed its perimeter. As of Monday, the fire was 30% mopped up, with firefighters continuing to search for and extinguish remaining heat.

Smoke may remain visible in the area for several days as mop-up work continues.

DFPA assigned three engines, two squads, a 10-person crew, a bulldozer, a water tender and overhead personnel to the fire. Central Douglas Fire & Rescue also assisted with the response.

Later Sunday, firefighters were called to a reported natural-cover fire near the 10060 block of Lookingglass Road. Crews arrived to find a grass fire burning across approximately one-quarter of an acre.

Firefighters quickly stopped the Lookingglass Creek Fire from spreading and completed mop-up work before clearing the scene at approximately 4:10 p.m. The fire has been placed in patrol status and will receive three consecutive heat and smoke checks before it is considered contained.

DFPA, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Lookingglass Rural Fire District and Tenmile Rural Fire District responded. DFPA assigned four engines and overhead personnel to the incident.

The causes of both fires remain under investigation.

DFPA reminded residents that cooler weather does not eliminate the risk of wildfires. Fire season restrictions remain in effect, and the public is encouraged to continue following all current restrictions.

The Roseburg City Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2, to consider the selection of Roseburg’s next city manager.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Roseburg City Hall. Councilors will first enter an executive session to discuss matters related to the city manager recruitment. Executive sessions are closed to the general public.

After the executive session, the council will return to an open public meeting and vote on whether to authorize the mayor to execute an employment contract with the selected city manager.

The open session is expected to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m., although the time could change depending on the length of the executive session.

Community members may attend the open portion of the meeting in person or watch a livestream on the City of Roseburg’s Facebook page.

The city said additional information will be released following the meeting if the council approves a selection.

ODFW says OR-213 is traveling through the eastern Cascades after leaving the Indigo Pack

CENTRAL OREGON, Ore. - A radio-collared gray wolf from the Indigo Pack has been spotted frequently around the Cascade Lakes Highway corridor in recent weeks, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The male wolf, identified as OR-213, has been traveling throughout the eastern slopes of the Cascades. ODFW said it has received numerous reports from people who have seen the wolf during his travels.

Young wolves commonly leave their family packs as they mature. Known as dispersal, the behavior allows wolves to search for a mate, suitable habitat and an opportunity to establish a territory of their own.

Dispersing wolves may travel hundreds or even thousands of miles and typically do not remain in the same location for long.

ODFW said OR-213 may appear lean, but his condition is not considered unusual. Wolves are generally at their leanest during late summer after shedding their summer coats. OR-213 is also covering long distances as he moves through the region.

Although wolves are generally shy and tend to avoid people, ODFW is reminding residents and visitors to give any wolf they encounter plenty of space. People should not approach, follow, feed or attempt to interact with the animal.

If a wolf is lingering near a roadway, motorists should remain at a safe distance and may honk their horn to encourage it to move along. Anyone who encounters a wolf while recreating on foot should make noise and wave their arms to appear larger.

ODFW cautioned that any wild animal can become dangerous if it is cornered, injured, sick or accustomed to being around people. Those who encounter a wolf should keep their distance and leave the animal a clear route to escape.

Wolf sightings can be submitted through the ODFW Wolf Reporting Form.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Volunteers in Douglas County will come together Sept. 12 to build beds for children in need as part of the eighth annual Bunks Across America event.

The local build will be held at Lowe’s, 3300 NW Aviation Drive in Roseburg. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, with bed building beginning at 9 a.m. Organizers hope to build 50 beds for local children.

The event is being organized by the Umpqua Valley chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit working to ensure that no child has to sleep on the floor. No previous construction experience is required to volunteer.

Bunks Across America is the organization’s largest coordinated bed-building event. Chapters and communities across the country will hold builds during the week of Sept. 5 through Sept. 12.

Last year, 209 Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters brought together more than 12,955 volunteers who built 10,075 beds in a single day. Organizers have set an even larger goal for 2026, hoping to engage 15,000 volunteers from more than 250 chapters to build and deliver at least 12,000 beds.

Oregon chapters in the Bend, Eugene and Umpqua Valley areas are among those planning builds Sept. 12.

Luke Mickelson, the founder of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, is also expected to participate in the Roseburg build. Mickelson was recognized as a CNN Hero in 2018 for his work helping children receive safe and comfortable places to sleep.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace builds and delivers beds to children who may otherwise be sleeping on floors, couches, air mattresses or in other unsuitable conditions. The beds are provided at no cost to qualifying families.

Community members can participate regardless of their experience level. Families may also request a bed for a child in need through the organization.

Museums, county parks, campgrounds, boat ramps and Salmon Harbor facilities will remain open

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Douglas County government offices will be closed to the public Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

The closure includes offices in the Douglas County Courthouse and Justice Building in Roseburg, the Douglas County Courthouse Annex in Reedsport, the Douglas County Fairgrounds Office, county landfill and transfer sites, and other external county government offices.

Although offices will be closed, some county officials and employees will continue working on routine, special or emergency assignments. That includes personnel from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Juvenile Department, Public Works Department, Emergency Management Department, Parks Department and Salmon Harbor Marina.

Several county-operated attractions and recreational facilities will remain available during the holiday:

• The Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History in Roseburg and Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum in Winchester Bay will be open to visitors.
• Douglas County parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will remain open and accessible.
• Salmon Harbor Marina and Winchester Bay RV Park will continue operating.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office lobby will be closed Monday, but deputies, 911 communications personnel and other staff will continue providing law enforcement and emergency services. Residents should call 911 for emergencies or 541-440-4471 for non-emergency dispatch.

County officials encouraged residents traveling, camping or attending gatherings during the holiday weekend to monitor road, weather and air-quality conditions and take appropriate safety precautions.

Labor Day recognizes the contributions of American workers and the labor movement. Oregon became the first state to establish Labor Day as an official holiday when legislation was signed into law on Feb. 21, 1887. It became a federal holiday in 1894.
