Firefighters Stop Grass Fire Near Richardson Road in Myrtle Creek

MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. - Firefighters stopped the forward spread of a grass fire near the 2000 block of Richardson Road on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 8, according to the Douglas Forest Protective Association.
Crews from DFPA, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, and the Myrtle Creek Fire Department were dispatched at approximately 1:48 p.m. Arriving firefighters found an estimated 1.5-acre grass fire spreading at a moderate rate and began initial attack operations.
DFPA reported that three of its engines and overhead command staff were on scene.
By 2:25 p.m., firefighters had knocked down the fire’s forward spread and were transitioning into mop-up. DFPA credited the quick action of responding firefighters and said no homes or structures were threatened.
The fire was human-caused, according to DFPA. Details surrounding the cause remained under investigation. The agency did not provide a final acreage in its update.
With forward spread stopped and crews moving into mop-up, DFPA said the 2:25 p.m. update would be its final public information on the incident.
The agency also reminded residents that moderate fire danger and fire restrictions remained in effect at the time of the fire. Those restrictions prohibited mowing dried, cured grass between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., prohibited debris burning at all times, and limited campfires to designated locations.
Umpqua Woofstock Howl-O-Ween Festival Brings Pet Activities And Discount Vaccines To Sutherlin

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - Pets and their families can celebrate Halloween and access discounted vaccinations when Umpqua Woofstock holds its annual Howl-O-Ween Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Sutherlin Central Park.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include pet costume activities, contests, prizes, local vendors, and community organizations. For the Love of Paws Veterinary Clinic will provide the discount vaccine clinic.
Among the planned activities is a pumpkin pie eating contest for dogs, with separate categories for small, medium, and large dogs. Families are also invited to dress up and take part in the Halloween activities.
Alongside the festivities, the event supports Umpqua Woofstock’s work to make veterinary care more affordable for local pet owners. Proceeds from the organization’s events help support its Discount Vaccine Clinic Fund, which helps bring affordable vaccination opportunities to the community.
Umpqua Woofstock said those services are part of its effort to help families keep their pets healthy and in their homes.
Established in 2022, the local nonprofit supports the bond between people and their pets through educational activities, community events, and assistance during times of need. Its events receive support from local businesses, volunteers, vendors, sponsors, and community members.
The announcement did not list vaccine prices or registration requirements.

Missing 3-Year-Old Joshua Ovalles Found Safe, Reunited With Father

BEAVERTON, Ore. - A search for a missing 3-year-old boy has ended with Joshua E. Ovalles safe and back in his father’s arms, according to the Beaverton Police Department.
Joshua, who was reported missing Oct. 7 and was the subject of an Amber Alert, was found in Lake Oswego after his mother, Mari Martinez, dropped him off at the home of a trusted individual, police said.
Photographs released by the department captured the emotional reunion between Joshua and his father, bringing a hopeful ending to the search for the young boy.

According to police, Martinez left the area after dropping Joshua off. Officers and detectives from Beaverton Police, Lake Oswego Police, and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office worked together to locate her. A Lake Oswego detective ultimately found Martinez and took her into custody.
Police said the search began after Martinez took Joshua following a Washington County judge’s decision to grant temporary custody to his father. According to the department, the court determined Joshua was in “immediate danger” while in his mother’s unsupervised custody.
Martinez is in Beaverton Police custody and faces charges of custodial interference and kidnapping, the department said. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Beaverton Police thanked the assisting agencies and community members who shared information and helped draw attention to Joshua’s disappearance.
The department closed its announcement with a message of relief: “Most importantly, we are grateful that Joshua has been found safe and is back in his father’s arms.”
UCC and Roseburg Public Library to Host Author B. R. Lewis Oct. 28

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Author and Umpqua Community College instructor B. R. Lewis will discuss his writing and read from his short story collection, “A Certain Kind of Luck,” during an Oct. 28 event at UCC.
UCC’s Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library and Roseburg Public Library are hosting “An Evening with Author B. R. Lewis” from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the learning commons and library.
The presentation will include a discussion of Lewis’s writing journey, readings from the collection, and an audience question-and-answer session. A book signing will follow, with a limited number of copies available for purchase.
“A Certain Kind of Luck” brings together 14 stories set across several generations in the Pacific Northwest. Its characters face strained family relationships, economic uncertainty, trauma, and injustice while weighing their responsibilities to others against their own needs.
Among them are a young married couple dealing with jealousy, financial pressures, and unplanned parenthood, and a Yakama mechanic questioning why he is rebuilding a fishing platform on a river with no salmon. The collection’s settings range from Camas, Washington, to Roseburg, with rivers and rural communities shaping the lives of its characters.
Lewis was born in Portland and raised in Camas. He graduated from Western Washington University and earned a Master of Fine Arts at Eastern Washington University’s Inland Northwest Center for Writers in Spokane.
He also completed AmeriCorps service terms in Sitka, Alaska, and Vancouver, Washington, and served as an editor for the literary journals “Willow Springs” and “Sundog Lit.” He now lives in southern Oregon and teaches at UCC.
Reedsport Forfeits Homecoming Football Game Against Camas Valley

REEDSPORT, Ore. - Reedsport Community Charter School’s football team will forfeit this week’s homecoming game against Camas Valley because it does not have enough healthy players available, the school announced.

The decision comes during homecoming week, when students and families would ordinarily gather to cheer on the team. In its announcement, the school said the health and safety of its student-athletes must come first.
“This is never an easy decision, especially during Homecoming Week,” the school wrote.
School officials said they will continue evaluating the football program and make decisions about its future based on players’ health, safety, and well-being. The announcement did not specify how many players are unavailable or whether additional games will be affected.
The school thanked students, families, fans, and the community for their support and understanding.

City And County Revoke Occupancy At Budget 16 Motel Over Unsafe Conditions

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The City of Roseburg and Douglas County Building Department have revoked occupancy at the Budget 16 Motel, 1067 NE Stephens St, in Roseburg, citing unsafe conditions that violate public health and safety requirements.
Notices are posted on every door at the facility, and all residents had to move out.
Two notices dated Sept. 29, 2026, identify the property at 1067 NE Stephens St. One, issued by the Douglas County Building Department, orders “STOP ALL WORK” and directs the recipient to contact the department within 10 days. It also states, “DO NOT OCCUPY THIS STRUCTURE,” and says the order must remain posted until its removal is authorized by the building official.
The second notice, marked “DANGER,” states, “THIS BUILDING IS DEEMED UNSAFE FOR HUMAN OCCUPANCY.” It identifies the City of Roseburg as the issuing authority and warns that anyone removing the sign without authorization will be prosecuted.
In an official statement provided to The Roseburg Receiver, the city said officials hope the property owner will obtain the appropriate permits and correct the deficiencies.
