Semi-Truck Fire Prompts Emergency Response Along I-5 Near Sutherlin

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Around 5 pm Tuesday, a semi-truck fire fully engulfed the cab near milepost 138 on southbound Interstate 5 near Sutherlin.

Responders from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Sutherlin Fire Department, Oakland Fire Department, and Oregon State Police responded to the scene.

According to DFPA, firefighters stopped the fire’s forward spread and worked to mop up the area. The agency advised drivers of possible traffic delays while emergency equipment and crews were near the roadway.

Information about the cause of the fire or any injuries was not provided.

False Radio Message Prompts Emergency Operations Center Activation in Coos County

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a false radio transmission that prompted officials to activate the county’s Emergency Operations Center early Sunday, Oct. 4.

The message aired around 2:30 a.m. on Law 2, a primary radio frequency used by several law enforcement agencies in Coos County. According to the Sheriff’s Office, it described an “ocean surface breach” outside the bar at Charleston.

Officials immediately activated the Emergency Operations Center to check the report, identify its source, and determine whether there was any current or ongoing threat to the county. Sheriff’s Office employees quickly determined that the transmission did not come from a legitimate source.

The release did not explain what the message meant by an ocean surface breach or provide further details about what was transmitted. It also did not identify who investigators believe created or sent the message.

The Sheriff’s Office cited federal provisions concerning false distress signals and broadcast hoaxes in its release. Federal law prohibits knowingly transmitting false or fraudulent distress signals or communications related to them.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the creation or transmission of the message is asked to call the Coos County Sheriff’s Office at 541-396-7800.

Volunteers Invited to 42nd Annual Umpqua Rivers Cleanup on October 18

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Residents across the Umpqua Valley are invited to help clean up local waterways Sunday, October 18, during the 42nd Annual Umpqua Rivers Cleanup.

The cleanup is sponsored by Umpqua Watersheds, Native Fish Society, Thrive Umpqua, and SOLVE. Volunteers will collect trash from riverbanks, boat ramps, parks, and other access points throughout the watershed.

Participants can choose a location close to home and work at their own pace throughout the day. Organizers welcome individuals, families, friends, and neighborhood groups, whether they have a few minutes or several hours to spend.

Area coordinators will be available to help volunteers find river sections that need attention, assist with trash removal, and guide cleanup efforts. Volunteers can work independently or join a coordinator-led group.

Organizers encourage residents to collect litter before fall rains carry it into rivers and eventually to the ocean.

“This event has become a symbol of our region’s commitment to clean water and healthy rivers,” said Julie Lowe of Umpqua Watersheds.

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring gloves if available. Umpqua Watersheds can provide trash bags and help with disposal. Anyone needing bags or other cleanup materials can contact Bob Hoehne at 541-679-7077.

The annual event has brought together students, families, conservation groups, anglers, and businesses for more than four decades to care for the Umpqua’s waterways.

Community members of all ages are welcome to participate.

Cleanup Details

  • Date: Sunday, October 18, 2026
  • Time: Throughout the day, as volunteers’ schedules allow
  • Locations: Riverbanks, creeks, boat ramps, parks, and shoreline areas throughout the Umpqua watershed
  • Bring: Sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and gloves if available
  • Supplies: Contact Bob Hoehne at 541-679-7077 for bags or other cleanup materials

South Umpqua Historical Society Receives Grant for Pioneer Indian Museum Collection

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

A grant from the Lilja Family Fund of Oregon Community Foundation will help the Pioneer Indian Museum in Canyonville catalog and digitize its collection, making local historical materials easier for the public to search.

The South Umpqua Historical Society, which operates the museum at 421 SW Fifth Street, will use the funding to pay for staff assistance in the coming year. The collection includes thousands of artifacts, photographs, documents, and books that require detailed registration.

Susan Waddle, president of the historical society, said that help is essential to the museum’s work.

“Staff assistance is hugely valuable to the detailed registration of our collection of thousands of artifacts, photos, documents and books,” Waddle said.

Research and digitization also helped the museum create an extensive exhibit honoring local veterans earlier this year as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Waddle thanked the Lilja Family Fund and Oregon Community Foundation on behalf of the society’s board and members, saying the nonprofit could not complete its collection work without funding assistance.

Community Turns Out for UCAN’s Ninth Annual Empty Bowls Dinner

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Shelves of colorful handmade bowls greeted guests at UCAN Food Bank on Monday evening as community members gathered for the ninth annual Empty Bowls Dinner.

The Oct. 5 fundraiser drew a strong turnout to the food bank warehouse at 284 NE Kenneth Ford Drive. Guests chose bowls, sampled soups, and shared a meal while supporting food assistance in Douglas County. The Roseburg Receiver and The Roseburg Plug attended the event.

Inside the warehouse, soup stations lined a long table, and guests gathered at dining tables near shelves stocked with food. Bread and other refreshments accompanied the meal, while live music was part of the evening.

Participating soup providers included:

  • Shanti’s Indian Cuisine
  • Alexander’s Greek Cuisine
  • McMenamins Station Pub & Brewery
  • UCAN’s Feeding Umpqua
  • Little Brother’s Pub
  • Seven Thai

The bowls gave guests plenty to choose from. Some featured bright colors and painted designs, while others showed the textures and glazes of handmade pottery. Each guest could take a bowl home after the dinner.

Be Still Studios, Umpqua Valley Arts Association, and Over the Hill Ceramics helped supply bowls, along with individual ceramic artists and other donors. At Over the Hill Ceramics, community members had been invited to paint bowls for the fundraiser, with the studio covering the cost of paint and kiln firing.

The dinner also included a raffle, wine pull, and online silent auction. Contributions from artists, food providers, volunteers, and sponsors helped bring the event together.

Empty Bowls supports the Food Bank’s work supplying food and resources to pantries, kitchens, and other food assistance programs throughout Douglas County. That work also extends into rural communities through UCAN’s Outpost program, which brings food directly to residents in areas including Elkton, Camas Valley, Days Creek, and Diamond Lake.

UCAN had set a $65,000 fundraising goal ahead of the dinner. A confirmed attendance count and fundraising total were not available for this article.

The fundraiser continues beyond Monday’s gathering. According to the event program, the online silent auction remains open until noon Friday, Oct. 9. Anyone can bid, including people who did not attend the dinner.

More information about Empty Bowls and ways to support the Food Bank is available on UCAN’s website.

More images of the event are posted in our official post here.

Pacific Power to Match Donations That Help Oregon Households Pay Energy Bills

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Pacific Power customers in Douglas County can help neighbors pay their energy bills through a donation program that keeps contributions in the donor’s home county.

The utility announced Oct. 5 that it will match customer donations to the Oregon Energy Fund dollar for dollar, up to $72,000. The nonprofit verifies eligibility and distributes assistance to households needing help with energy costs.

Customers receiving paper bills can look for an Oregon Energy Fund donation envelope in their October statement. Donations can also be made through Pacific Power’s website or by calling 1-888-221-7070.

For those who prefer to give throughout the year, Pacific Power offers a fixed monthly donation option starting at $1, added to the customer’s bill. Those contributions also qualify for the matching program.

According to Pacific Power, every dollar donated stays in the donor’s home county. Contributions from Douglas County residents would therefore support eligible households locally. Donations may be tax-deductible.

Brian Allbritton, executive director of the Oregon Energy Fund, said the assistance helps families manage energy costs alongside other needs, including food, housing, and care for their children.

Pacific Power said contributions from the company, its customers, and employees helped 2,601 Oregonians pay their energy bills last year. That included 411 seniors, 418 people with disabilities, and 869 children.

Customers who need help with their own bills can also call 1-888-221-7070. Pacific Power representatives can discuss payment plans and connect customers with local agencies that offer additional assistance.
