Public Tips Help Recover Sutherlin’s Stolen Historic Train Whistle

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - A historic steam whistle stolen from Sutherlin’s park locomotive has been recovered in Redding, California, after witnesses provided information to police.

The whistle was cut from the city’s 1921 Cooke oil-fired steam locomotive on September 15, according to the Sutherlin Police Department.

Captain Dennis Chrisenbery said witnesses in Redding came forward after seeing the department’s earlier press release seeking help with the case. Their information gave investigators a lead on the missing whistle.

Sutherlin police shared that information with the Redding Police Department, whose officers located and recovered it.

Chrisenbery thanked Redding police for their assistance and work on the investigation.

The recovery follows a public appeal to help locate the stolen piece of Sutherlin’s railroad history. Police credited information from people who saw that appeal with helping bring the search to a successful end.

Prescribed Burn Planned Near Long Prairie on Tiller Ranger District

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Fire crews plan to begin a prescribed burn Monday, October 5, on the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest, with burning potentially continuing through the weekend if conditions allow.

The planned burn is in Unit 710 at Long Prairie, along National Forest Service Road 3201-300, west of Threehorn Campground. Forest officials said favorable weather and fuel conditions are providing an opportunity to conduct the work, though crews will assess weather, conditions on the ground, and smoke impacts before proceeding.

A closure around the burn area will be in place for firefighter and public safety. The Forest Service listed the following access points as closed:

  • The NFSR 32-300 junction.
  • The NFSR 600-620 junction.
  • The NFSR 300-330 junction at Diamond Rock.
  • The NFSR 1616-205 junction.

The burn is being conducted in partnership with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, Oregon Department of Forestry, Douglas Forest Protective Association, and Tiller Volunteer Fire Department.

Smoke may be visible from surrounding areas during and after the burn. Officials ask people not to call 911 to report smoke associated with the planned operation.

Prescribed burning is conducted under monitored conditions to meet forest management and fuel reduction objectives. People traveling near the area should use caution and watch for fire personnel and equipment.

Kickstart Coffee Plans to Open Within the Next Week in Roseburg

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Kickstart Coffee plans to open within the next week at 485 NE Stephens Street in Roseburg, according to owner Jace Russell. A grand opening date will be announced later.

The business is moving into the former Oregon Sourdough location, which previously housed Pizza Hut.

Russell said the menu will include soups, paninis, and salads, along with a variety of coffee and energy drinks.

For Russell, who grew up in the area, opening the business brings together his family’s food-service background and his girlfriend’s interest in working as a barista.

“My parents have always been in food service,” Russell said. “This building kind of came open and my girlfriend is really heavily into doing the barista type thing. So, it’s just a good fit.”

Russell said both he and his girlfriend are local.

Updates about the opening will be available on Kickstart Coffee’s Facebook page.

Umpqua National Forest Reopens Trailheads Following Castle Fire Closure

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Three trailheads on the Tiller Ranger District have reopened after Umpqua National Forest lifted a closure related to the Castle Fire.

The Forest terminated Closure Order #06-15-02-26-04, effective immediately, reopening Lakes, Fish Lake, and Beaver Swamp trailheads.

Visitors returning to the area should remain alert for hazards left behind by the fire. The Forest cautioned that lifting an emergency closure does not mean the risks associated with recently burned areas have disappeared.

Hazards can include:

  • Falling trees and limbs.
  • Uneven or unstable ground, including holes left by burned root systems.
  • Falling rocks.
  • Trail sections that are difficult to navigate.
  • Landslides, debris flows, and flash floods.

High winds can increase those dangers, as can heavy rain and winter storms. Some risks remain elevated after storms have passed.

Visitors planning to use the reopened trailheads can review the Forest’s guidance on recreating in burned areas before heading out.

Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court Graduation Set for October 13

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Douglas County’s H.O.P.E. Drug Court will hold its 114th graduation ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 5:15 p.m. in Cascade Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The public is invited to attend and hear graduates share their experiences in recovery.

The ceremony will bring together participants, families, treatment providers, court officials, and community supporters to recognize the work graduates have put into completing the program.

H.O.P.E. Drug Court provides a structured alternative for eligible people whose substance use has contributed to their involvement in the criminal justice system. Participants undergo treatment, drug testing, supervision, and frequent court appearances. The program uses incentives and sanctions alongside support tailored to each participant’s needs.

For some, that work includes finding stable housing or employment, continuing their education, addressing mental health concerns, or rebuilding relationships with family. Some participants are also working toward reunification with their children.

According to the county’s announcement, the program connects participants with behavioral health services, housing resources, employment opportunities, educational support, and family services to help address barriers to recovery.

Circuit Court Judge Robert B. Johnson leads the program alongside a team representing treatment providers, community corrections, prosecution, defense, law enforcement, human services, and local program coordination. Participants return to court regularly, allowing the judge and team to follow their progress, recognize successes, and address setbacks.

The county said the program aims to help participants maintain recovery and build stability while reducing future involvement in the criminal justice system.

The announcement also outlined estimated prison costs avoided through the program. Across the first two H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduations of 2026, participants collectively accounted for 433 months of prison sentences they did not serve because they remained in the local treatment court program. The county estimated the associated avoided prison costs at approximately $2.3 million.

Those figures represent estimated prison costs avoided, rather than a calculation of net savings after the costs of operating Drug Court.

The Oct. 13 ceremony will offer community members an opportunity to learn more about the program and hear directly from those completing it. Families, community partners, and other supporters are encouraged to attend.

Glide Fire Volunteers to Host Tri-Tip Barbecue and Craft Fair Oct. 10-11

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

The Glide Fire Association will host two days of barbecue, crafts, and fundraising Oct. 10-11 to support the community’s volunteer fire department.

The Firemen’s Tri-Tip Barbecue and Craft Fair will be held at the Glide Community Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Local firefighters and EMTs will be there to meet community members.

The $16 tri-tip meal includes a 5-ounce serving of meat, baked beans, coleslaw, a dinner roll, and soda or bottled water. A $6 hot dog meal includes chips and a drink. Cooked, sliced tri-tip will also be available for $20 per pound.

Cash or checks are preferred. Organizers note that fees may apply to credit card purchases.

Alongside the craft fair, visitors can browse a baked goods and pie shop and enter a raffle for donated prizes. Items include a hand-sewn quilt, a Ron Campbell photo book, a Sportsman’s Warehouse gift certificate, a Medicine Flower gift basket, and artwork.

Raffle tickets cost $1 each or $10 for 11. The drawing is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. Winners do not need to be present but must pick up their prizes within 90 days.

All proceeds benefit Glide’s Volunteer Fire Department, which provides fire protection and emergency medical services. According to the association, its fundraising helps purchase supplies and other items beyond what the district’s tax funding covers.

Community members can also help by donating homemade fruit pies, cookies, candies, and bread. Organizers ask that donated pies contain no cream fillings. Baked goods can be dropped off at the Glide Community Center on Friday afternoon, Oct. 9, or early Saturday morning.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for Glide Helping Hands.

For questions about the event or joining the association, call Glide Fire at 541-496-0224. More information about the Glide Rural Fire Department is available at glidefire.org.
