Douglas County Ballot Measure Results: Glide School Bond Leads, Sutherlin Marijuana Ban Poised to Remain

Article by The Roseburg Receiver
Glide Elementary School
💡
All numbers are based on the results as of 9 pm November 3rd. Please see link below for the latest results.

ROSEBURG, Ore. Voters in several Douglas County communities weighed in on four local ballot measures Tuesday, with early results showing strong support for school improvements in Glide, a continued ban on marijuana businesses in Sutherlin and restrictions on psilocybin businesses in Reedsport.

According to unofficial results from the Oregon Secretary of State, three of the four measures are receiving majority support, while a proposal to repeal Sutherlin's existing marijuana business ban is trailing.

The results were last updated at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, November 3. Additional ballots remain to be counted, and none of the outcomes are final.

Glide School District: School Improvement Bond Leading

Voters in the Glide School District are showing strong support for Measure 10-216, which would authorize more than $16.5 million in bonds to improve school facilities, safety and capacity.

Measure 10-216 Results:

  • Yes: 1,553 votes (63.41%)
  • No: 896 votes (36.59%)

The measure currently leads by 657 votes.

If approved, the district would be authorized to issue up to $16,515,000 in bonds and receive an additional $6,126,000 in matching grant funding, bringing the total potential funding to approximately $22.6 million.

The funding would support improvements at Glide Elementary School, the district's middle and high schools, and its athletic complex.

At the elementary school, proposed projects include new classrooms, a multipurpose cafeteria, accessibility improvements and changes to the school's entryway.

Middle and high school improvements would include safety and accessibility upgrades, a new classroom building for middle school students and a multipurpose building.

The athletic complex would also receive improvements, including a new indoor practice facility and a building for community events, meeting rooms and district operations.

According to the official ballot summary, the $6.1 million matching grant is available only if voters approve the bond measure. If rejected, the funding would be redirected to another school district.

The district estimates the annual property tax rate would not rise above its current bond levy rate of $0.91 per $1,000 of assessed property value because existing bonds are being retired. The actual rate could vary depending on interest rates and assessed values.

Sutherlin: Marijuana Business Ban Repeal Trailing, Sales Tax Measure Leading

Sutherlin voters considered two related measures involving marijuana businesses and taxation, with early results showing different outcomes.

Measure 10-217: Repeal of Marijuana Business Ban

Measure 10-217 would repeal Sutherlin's existing prohibition on marijuana facilities following updates to city regulations.

The city has maintained restrictions on marijuana businesses since voters approved a ban in 2016.

Measure 10-217 Results:

  • Yes: 1,298 votes (44.87%)
  • No: 1,595 votes (55.13%)

The measure is currently failing by 297 votes.

If the results hold, Sutherlin's existing prohibition on marijuana facilities would remain in place.

Approval would have opened the door for marijuana businesses to operate within city limits under updated local regulations.

Measure 10-218: Three Percent Marijuana Sales Tax

While voters are currently rejecting the repeal of the business ban, a separate measure establishing a local marijuana sales tax is receiving substantial support.

Measure 10-218 would authorize a 3% local tax on retail marijuana sales within Sutherlin.

Measure 10-218 Results:

  • Yes: 2,184 votes (76.23%)
  • No: 681 votes (23.77%)

The measure is leading by 1,503 votes.

However, the tax measure is tied to Measure 10-217.

If the business ban remains in place, the proposed tax would remain inactive because marijuana retailers would not be permitted to operate within the city under the existing prohibition.

The two measures were presented separately to voters, allowing residents to decide whether marijuana facilities should be allowed and whether retail sales should be subject to a local tax.

Reedsport: Psilocybin Business Ban Receiving Strong Support

Reedsport voters appear likely to approve Measure 10-215, which would prohibit the establishment of psilocybin-related businesses within city limits.

Measure 10-215 Results:

  • Yes: 950 votes (67.28%)
  • No: 462 votes (32.72%)

The measure currently leads by 488 votes.

The vote follows previous action by Reedsport residents and city officials to restrict psilocybin businesses.

In November 2022, voters approved a temporary two-year ban on psilocybin-related businesses. The city later adopted Ordinance 2024-1215, establishing a permanent prohibition.

Measure 10-215 places the question before voters again, with early results showing more than two-thirds of participating voters supporting the restriction.

The measure concerns businesses providing psilocybin-related services within the city.

Results Remain Unofficial

All four measures remain unofficial as Douglas County continues processing ballots from Tuesday's election.

The largest percentage margin is currently in Sutherlin's marijuana sales tax measure, where more than 76% of voters support the proposal.

The Glide School District bond measure is also receiving a substantial majority, while Reedsport's psilocybin business ban is supported by more than 67% of voters.

Sutherlin's proposal to repeal its marijuana business ban is the only one of the four measures currently trailing.

The Douglas County Elections Division has scheduled additional unofficial results for Thursday, November 5, with certification expected by the end of November.

Kotek Leads Oregon Governor's Race as Early Statewide Election Results Come In

Article by The Roseburg Receiver
💡
All numbers are based on the results as of 9 pm November 3rd. Please see link below for the latest results.

SALEM, Ore. - Oregon's first unofficial election results show incumbent Gov. Tina Kotek leading Republican challenger Christine Drazan, while several other statewide and congressional races are beginning to take shape following Tuesday's general election.

The latest figures from the Oregon Secretary of State show Kotek leading statewide, although early returns in Douglas County indicate stronger support for Drazan locally.

In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Jeff Merkley is also leading statewide, while Oregon's two congressional districts representing portions of Douglas County are showing different results.

As of approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, more than 1.4 million ballots had been counted statewide, representing about 45% of Oregon's active registered voters.

All results remain unofficial, and additional ballots will be counted in the coming days.

Oregon Governor

Incumbent Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek is leading Republican Christine Drazan in the race for Oregon governor.

Statewide Results:

  • Tina Kotek (Democrat): 727,532 votes (52.37%)
  • Christine Drazan (Republican): 624,328 votes (44.94%)
  • Brett Smith (Pacific Green): 35,631 votes (2.56%)

Kotek currently holds a lead of more than 103,000 votes statewide.

The race marks a rematch between Kotek and Drazan, who faced each other in the 2022 gubernatorial election.

Early Douglas County returns show a different pattern from the statewide results, with Drazan leading locally. An earlier county tally placed Drazan at 27,390 votes, or approximately 69% of the local vote.

The governor's race remains unofficial as counties continue counting ballots.

United States Senate

Democratic incumbent Jeff Merkley is leading Republican challenger David Brock Smith in Oregon's U.S. Senate race.

Statewide Results:

  • Jeff Merkley (Democrat): 789,816 votes (57.17%)
  • David Brock Smith (Republican): 553,249 votes (40.05%)
  • Chris Henry (Progressive/Pacific Green): 25,068 votes (1.81%)
  • Gary Lyndon Dye (Libertarian): 12,326 votes (0.89%)

Merkley holds a statewide lead of more than 236,000 votes.

Douglas County's early results show a different preference, with David Brock Smith receiving a majority of the local vote in the initial returns.

U.S. House of Representatives, District 2

Republican incumbent Cliff Bentz is leading Democrat Chris Beck in Oregon's 2nd Congressional District.

Districtwide Results:

  • Cliff Bentz (Republican): 165,553 votes (61.74%)
  • Chris Beck (Democrat): 102,230 votes (38.13%)

Bentz currently leads Beck by more than 63,000 votes.

The 2nd Congressional District includes portions of southern and eastern Oregon, including part of Douglas County.

U.S. House of Representatives, District 4

Democratic incumbent Val Hoyle is leading Republican challenger Monique DeSpain in Oregon's 4th Congressional District.

Districtwide Results:

  • Val Hoyle (Democrat): 147,508 votes (54.20%)
  • Monique DeSpain (Republican): 116,312 votes (42.74%)
  • Justin Filip (Pacific Green/Progressive): 8,133 votes (2.99%)

Hoyle currently leads DeSpain by more than 31,000 votes across the district.

However, early Douglas County returns show DeSpain leading locally.

An earlier county tally placed DeSpain at 20,854 votes, compared with 9,896 for Hoyle.

The results highlight the difference between voting patterns in Douglas County and those across the broader congressional district.

Oregon House of Representatives, District 1

Republican Court Boice is leading Democrat Bret Cecil in the race for Oregon House District 1.

Districtwide Results:

  • Court Boice (Republican): 20,394 votes (63.79%)
  • Bret Cecil (Democrat): 11,505 votes (35.99%)

Boice currently leads Cecil by 8,889 votes.

The district includes southwestern Oregon communities, including portions of Douglas County.

Oregon House of Representatives, District 2

Republican Virgle Osborne ran without a listed opponent in the general election.

Districtwide Results:

  • Virgle Osborne: 19,077 votes

Additional write-in votes have also been recorded.

Oregon House of Representatives, District 4

Republican Alek Skarlatos also ran without a listed opponent.

Districtwide Results:

  • Alek Skarlatos: 20,222 votes

Skarlatos received the overwhelming majority of votes recorded in the contest, with the remaining votes going to write-in candidates.

Douglas County Voting Patterns Differ From Statewide Results

The initial returns illustrate a difference between the choices of Douglas County voters and the overall statewide electorate.

While Kotek leads Oregon's governor's race and Merkley leads the U.S. Senate contest, early Douglas County results favor their Republican opponents.

A similar divide is visible in the 4th Congressional District, where Val Hoyle leads across the district despite Monique DeSpain receiving more votes in Douglas County's initial count.

These differences reflect the larger geographic areas covered by statewide and congressional elections, where ballots from multiple counties contribute to the overall results.

More Ballots Remain to Be Counted

The figures represent early election-night returns and are subject to change.

Oregon elections officials will continue processing eligible ballots over the coming days, including ballots received under the state's postmark rules.

The Oregon Secretary of State is scheduled to certify the statewide election results on December 10, 2026.

Voters can review the latest unofficial results through the state's official election website:

Portland Man Killed In ATV Crash At Umpqua Dunes Near Winchester Bay

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

WINCHESTER BAY, Ore. - A 31-year-old Portland man died Sunday afternoon following an ATV crash at the Umpqua Dunes National Recreation Area near Winchester Bay.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Austin Anthony Durrett of Portland.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 4:30 p.m. on November 1 after 911 dispatchers received a report of an injury ATV crash near an area known as Third Finger.

When deputies arrived, they found Durrett unresponsive and not breathing. Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.
