Summer Arts Festival Returns To Fir Grove Park This Weekend

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. - One of Roseburg’s long-running summer traditions returns this weekend as the Summer Arts Festival brings three days of art, food, music and family activities to Fir Grove Park.

Hosted by Umpqua Valley Arts, the festival is scheduled for Friday, June 26, through Sunday, June 28. The annual event has been part of the Roseburg summer season for more than 50 years, drawing artists, entertainers, vendors, families and visitors to the park during the final weekend of June.

This year’s festival will feature more than 100 local and regional artist vendors, offering handmade work across a variety of mediums. Visitors can expect booths filled with original art, handcrafted goods and creative pieces from artists throughout the region.

The festival is also designed to be family friendly, with a Youth Zone offering hands-on art activities and STEAM experiences for children and families. Young creators will also be represented through an Emerging Artist Vendor tent, giving local youth a chance to sell and share their own work.

Live music, dance and entertainment will take place throughout the weekend on two stages. The festival will also include artist demonstrations, interactive art experiences and a food court featuring regional food and beverage vendors.

For many in Douglas County, the Summer Arts Festival is more than a place to shop for art. It is a community gathering that brings people together in the shade of Fir Grove Park at the start of the summer season. Visitors can walk the booths, meet local artists, grab food, listen to live music and spend time with friends and family.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Artist vendor booths will remain open until 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, while the food court will be open until 9 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person, and children ages 8 and under get in free.

Proceeds from the Summer Arts Festival support Umpqua Valley Arts and its year-round work to provide arts, cultural experiences and education opportunities in rural Oregon.

Wingstop Opens Roseburg Location During Soft Launch

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A new option for chicken wings has opened in Roseburg.

Wingstop is now serving customers at its new Roseburg location at 2034 NW Stewart Parkway in the Roseburg Marketplace Shopping Center. The restaurant opened to the public during a soft launch over the weekend, bringing the national wing chain to Douglas County for the first time.

The Roseburg location is takeout only and offers Wingstop’s familiar menu of wings, tenders, chicken sandwiches, fries, seasoned sides and sauces.

The opening adds another quick-service restaurant to one of Roseburg’s busier commercial areas, near grocery stores, retailers and other dining options along Stewart Parkway.

Wingstop’s arrival had been expected for several months after signs appeared on the building earlier this year. City site approval information previously showed the business occupying part of the commercial space at the Roseburg Marketplace Shopping Center.

Founded in Texas in 1994, Wingstop has grown into an international chain with thousands of locations. The Roseburg restaurant gives local customers a dedicated wing-focused option without leaving the area.

Early demand appeared strong during the first days of service, with customers stopping in as word spread that the restaurant had opened.

The Roseburg Wingstop is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to midnight.

Additional grand-opening details were not immediately available.

Roseburg Library To Host Johnny Appleseed Puppet Show For Kids

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Families looking for a fun summer activity can head to Roseburg Public Library next week for a puppet show built around adventure, kindness and the story of Johnny Appleseed.

The library will host Dragon Theater Puppets for a production of “Johnny Appleseed: Planting the Seeds of Adventure” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 30.

The show is geared toward children from pre-K through fifth grade, along with their families. The performance follows the legendary Johnny Appleseed as he travels across the American frontier, planting seeds and sharing kindness along the way.

The free program will take place at Roseburg Public Library, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd., as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Plant a Seed, Read,” encouraging children to keep reading while school is out for the summer.

More information about the Summer Reading Program is available at roseburgpubliclibrary.org. Library staff can also be reached at 541-492-7050 or library@roseburgor.gov.

Reedsport Fire Department Seeks Volunteer Ham Radio Operators

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

REEDSPORT, Ore. — The Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department is looking for volunteers interested in becoming licensed ham radio operators to support emergency communications in western Douglas County.

The volunteers would work with the Western Douglas County Emergency Operations Center, located at the Reedsport Fire Station at 2680 Frontage Road.

According to the department, training is offered online at no charge. A background check is required for anyone interested in the volunteer positions.

Ham radio operators can play an important role during major emergencies, especially when normal communication systems are down. In those situations, radio operators may help keep local emergency officials connected with county, state and federal agencies.

The department said the positions are vital because ham radio could become one of the last available ways to communicate during an emergency incident.

Anyone interested in learning more can contact Melvina Adolf at 928-200-0979 or the Reedsport Fire Department at 541-271-2423.
