Cow Creek Foundation Grant to Support Young Adult Neuroplastic Science Program

EUGENE, Ore. - A program that puts young adults in charge of helping explain pain science to their peers is receiving a financial boost from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.
Oregon Pain Science Alliance has been awarded a $4,500 grant for ONSET, the Oregon Neuroplastic Science Engagement Team. The Lane County program works with people ages 18 to 24, giving participants an opportunity to learn about the brain, nervous system and persistent symptoms while developing educational projects for other young adults.
Rather than simply attending classes or presentations, ONSET participants help decide how the program communicates its information. They can research health topics, develop educational materials, plan community outreach and provide input on what language and examples are most likely to connect with people their age.
The program focuses in part on neuroplasticity and the ways changes involving the brain and nervous system can play a role in chronic pain and other persistent symptoms.
Organizers say the experience also gives participants an opportunity to build skills in communication, project planning and community education.
The new grant will be used for program development and facilitation, supplies for participant projects and efforts to recruit additional young adults. Early outreach will focus on Lane County and nearby rural communities.
ONSET is currently accepting volunteer participants ages 18 to 24.
While young adults living with chronic pain or other persistent symptoms are especially encouraged to participate, having those symptoms is not a requirement. No previous background in neuroscience is needed.
According to information included with the grant announcement, 2023 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed chronic pain affected 12.3% of U.S. adults ages 18 to 29.
Oregon Pain Science Alliance is a nonprofit organization that provides education about pain and neuroplastic science, including information about how the brain and nervous system can contribute to persistent symptoms.
Young adults interested in ONSET can contact opsavolunteers@gmail.com for more information.
Missing Drain Man Jeffrey Hawks Found Safe

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - A Drain man reported missing earlier this week has been found safe, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies contacted 52-year-old Jeffrey Alan Hawks at his residence on Thursday, Aug. 13. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed Hawks was safe and is no longer considered missing.
Hawks had been reported missing Tuesday evening after family and friends were unable to reach him. He was last known to have left Murphy Plywood in Eugene early Sunday morning and had been expected to return to his home near Drain.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office thanked the community for its assistance during the search.
No further information will be released.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Douglas County families can get ready for the new school year with free school supplies, haircuts, food, health services and a full day of activities during the second annual Back-to-School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 22.
This year's event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Umpqua Community College, moving to a new location after more than 1,600 students and family members attended the inaugural event last year.
The free event is open to Douglas County residents of all ages and is designed to help students and families prepare for the start of school while connecting them with local organizations and resources.
Thrive Umpqua, Aviva Health, Adapt Integrated Health Care, Douglas Education Service District, Roseburg Schools, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians and Umpqua Health are among the organizations hosting this year's event.
Families will be able to pick up free school supplies while supplies last, and students can enter raffles for prizes including bicycles, scooters, laptops, shoe vouchers and gift cards.
Free haircuts will also be available for students looking for a fresh start before the first day of school.
Lunch will be provided at no cost, with food from Jackson Street Provisions and Smokin' Fridays. Umpqua Dairy ice cream and shave ice from UCC Athletics will also be available.
Umpqua Health will offer no-cost sports physicals and youth vaccinations during the event.

Planned activities include face painting, caricature drawings, a photo booth, balloon animals, henna tattoos, obstacle courses, a pump track, bike rodeo, soccer, volleyball, pickleball, arrow tag and an unwind zone.
Thundering Waters' WOW Truck will also be on site.
More than 40 community organizations are expected to participate, giving families an opportunity to learn about services and resources available throughout Douglas County.
"No single organization can meet all of a family's needs, but together we can," Thrive Umpqua Executive Director Jess Hand said. "That's why we're proud to help coordinate this event alongside so many partners across schools, healthcare, and our community."
Hand said organizers hope families leave the event with meaningful support and students head into the school year knowing their community is behind them.

Douglas County Cheer Hosting 10th Anniversary Youth Cheer Clinic

Reedsport Woman Killed, 2-Year-Old Son Injured After Being Struck on Highway 101

REEDSPORT, Ore. - A 34-year-old Reedsport woman was killed and her 2-year-old son suffered minor injuries after the two were struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in Reedsport.
Reedsport Police Department officers responded at approximately 4 p.m. Aug. 12 to the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and 19th Street.
When officers arrived, they found several citizens already providing aid to the woman and child.
The woman did not survive her injuries. Her 2-year-old son was transported to Lower Umpqua Hospital, where police said he was treated for minor injuries and later reunited with his father.
Police have not released the identity of the woman or additional details about the driver or circumstances leading up to the crash.
The Reedsport Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident with assistance from Oregon State Police and the Coos Bay Police Department.
Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
Roseburg Weekend Forecast Calls for Sunshine and Warmer Temperatures
ROSEBURG, Ore. - A warm and mostly sunny weekend is ahead for Roseburg, with afternoon temperatures gradually climbing into the upper 80s by Sunday.
The National Weather Service expects partly sunny skies Friday with a high near 84 degrees. Winds will remain light for much of the day before becoming north-northwest around 6 mph during the afternoon.
Friday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 54.
Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny and slightly warmer, reaching about 86 degrees. Calm winds during the morning will again become north-northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Saturday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 54.
Temperatures climb another couple of degrees Sunday, when Roseburg is forecast to reach about 88 under mostly sunny skies. Sunday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 56.
Across the broader region, forecasters in Medford say southwest flow will keep seasonable warmth and generally dry conditions in place through much of the coming week.
There will still be a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, primarily across western Siskiyou County, along the Cascades and in northern portions of Klamath and Lake counties. Any storms that develop could produce brief rain, gusty and erratic winds and lightning.
Thunderstorm chances decrease Sunday and Monday before drier conditions are expected to take over for most of next week.
For Roseburg and much of the Umpqua Valley, the weekend should remain relatively quiet, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures warming a few degrees each day.
