Governor Kotek Orders Oregon Flags Lowered in Honor of Dolly Parton
Gov. Tina Kotek has ordered flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff through sunset Sept. 1 in honor of Dolly Parton, citing her music, philanthropy and efforts to promote childhood literacy through the Imagination Library.
SALEM, Ore. — Gov. Tina Kotek has ordered flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff in honor of singer, songwriter and philanthropist Dolly Parton, who died Tuesday.
The order took effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, and directs flags to remain at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The Governor's Office said the action was taken pursuant to the U.S. Flag Code and a proclamation issued by President Donald Trump.
In announcing the order, Kotek reflected on Parton's music, public life and work promoting childhood literacy through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
Kotek said Parton's efforts to put books into the hands of children helped inspire Oregon's work to expand the Imagination Library across the state. The program provides free books to participating children from birth through age 5.
"The First Lady and I are so incredibly sad about the passing of Dolly Parton," Kotek said in the announcement, adding that Oregon is grateful for Parton's life, leadership and the joy she brought to people.
Parton was known worldwide for a decades-long career in country music as well as her charitable work, including the Imagination Library, which has distributed books to millions of children.
The Governor's Office issued the half-staff order Tuesday following Parton's death.
