Free Disaster Preparedness Fair Coming to Douglas County Fairgrounds
A free Disaster Preparedness Fair will bring emergency agencies, hands-on training and family activities to the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 19. Attendees can learn about evacuation planning, emergency communications, food storage, first aid and more.
Douglas County residents can learn practical ways to prepare for wildfires, earthquakes and other emergencies during a free Disaster Preparedness Fair on Saturday, September 19.
The family-friendly event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. inside the Exhibit Building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Local emergency professionals, public agencies and community organizations will offer demonstrations, hands-on activities and guidance intended to help households become more self-reliant during a disaster.
What Attendees Can Learn
The fair will cover several areas of emergency preparedness, including:
- Storing food and water
- Developing emergency meal and cooking plans
- Creating family communication plans
- Using alternative communication devices
- Identifying evacuation routes and shelter options
- Preparing sanitation plans
- Creating defensible space around homes
- Safely shutting off utilities
- Signing up for emergency alerts
- Getting to know and preparing with neighbors
- Building emergency go bags
- Becoming ready to manage without regular services for two weeks
- Understanding the psychological effects of disasters
First aid, CPR and Stop the Bleed training will also be available.
One of the featured attractions will be the Shaky Grounds Cafe Escape Experience, a mobile, escape-room-style activity that places participants in a simulated post-earthquake setting. The experience is designed to help people practice emergency skills while working through challenges in a hands-on environment.

The fair will also include free giveaways and door prizes. Admission is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food donation to support a local community food pantry.
