Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Authority has been awarded a $67,554.54 federal grant to purchase six commercial washer-extractors designed to clean firefighters’ protective clothing.

The funding comes through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The authority will contribute a $6,755.46 local match, bringing the total project investment to $74,310.

One machine will be installed at each of the department’s six staffed fire stations, allowing crews to clean their turnout gear at their assigned station after emergency calls.

According to the department, firefighters can encounter hazardous contaminants during structure fires and other incidents. The specialized equipment will make proper gear cleaning more accessible and consistent, supporting the department’s efforts to reduce exposure and protect firefighters’ long-term health.

The announcement also acknowledged the recent deaths of two young retired members who died from cancer. The department said both had spent years serving their communities, and their losses have reinforced its commitment to caring for current and future firefighters.

“This grant is about more than just purchasing six washing machines; it’s about taking care of our people,” the department said in its announcement.

The washer-extractors will be installed once the grant purchasing process is complete. An installation date was not provided.
